There's an issue with 'cured'. People becoming re-infected around the world who've apparently recovered is causing some disquiet at the moment. The possibility exists that people may not be cured at all, but may assume a sort of 'typhoid Mary' incarnation. It's pretty worrying.

Anyone any idea why only cumulative "negative" figures are given?  I just wonder how many of the positive cases have actually been cured and discharged.

From today's news update Pioneer.

On recovery rates

"We do have patients who don't need to be in hospitals and we have seen patients leaving critical care wards," said Dr Goodall.

"We don't have statistics for the number of patients who have recovered.

"I believe around 1900 patients have been discharged after being admitted to hospitals with Covid-19.

"Dr Goodhall once again praised the work of NHS staff and health and social care workers and said he has "every confidence" in how the Welsh Government have been combatting the virus."

I missed adding this to today's update above.

Coronavirus: Wales care home and hospital deaths pass 1,000

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) registered 1,016 deaths by 25 April - higher than Public Health Wales figures for the same period.

That is because the ONS includes deaths at home, in care homes and in hospices, not just hospitals.

The total number of deaths across the UK topped 22,000 - the highest since records began in 1993.

The Welsh figure of 1,016 is for deaths which occurred by 17 April and were registered by 25 April.

In total, there were 871 death registrations which involved coronavirus up to 17 April.

In the week ending 17 April alone there were 409 deaths involving the coronavirus.

This compares to 304 for the previous week and is 35% of all deaths.

London has the highest proportion at 55.5% of all deaths.

The number of deaths in care homes continues to rise - there have now been 184 so far in Wales.

Latest just in from New Scientist:

"There have been more than 3 million confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide and more than 211,000 deaths, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University.

Almost a third of the confirmed cases are in the US, which remains the worst affected country with more than 56,000 deaths. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) modelling indicates that deaths are likely to continue to rise in the US in coming weeks but could be substantially slowed by increased social distancing. Several states including Georgia, Texas, Michigan, Hawaii and Alaska have already begun to ease social distancing restrictions.

Other coronavirus developments

A third of all coronavirus deaths in England and Wales are happening in care homes, according to figures from the UK’s Office for National Statistics for the week ending 17 April. The daily death toll in hospitals has been falling since 8 April.
Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced that all people aged over 70 who are admitted to hospital will now be tested for covid-19. Sturgeon also said that face masks should be worn while shopping or using public transport."

There is little doubt that Trump is quite possibly the worst leader the US has ever had and in particular the worst for this sort of crisis.
