Class A3. Food and drink
Use for the sale of food or drink for consumption on the premises or of hot food for consumption off the premises.

Not another bl***y cafe surely!   No wonder there is a lot of obesity in this country!    :o

I read there is no A5 category in Wales, so does this fact lump together all sales of food-- eat in, eat out or whatever?
If it is going to be food and not news this will be good for Vollams---- unless???

I've just been reading Harvey's first ever review on TripAdvisor and it doesn't make pleasant reading.  According to whoever wrote it when they complained about the food the manager's response was that they could f... off  :o.

They also got a good review as well so maybe it's improving.....

There are no plans to close the Newsagents, it is just a potential option for the future.

I've heard Vollams has just changed hands.  It's been bought by someone from Bangor who owns some newsagent shops over there.  The previous owner (Graham?) has been asked to stay on by the new owner to run the shop for him.

Mr Fester and I visited Harveys this afternoon. I'll leave Fester to post his own review but I found it ok at best and somewhat overpriced for the quality of the food.

As Dave says, we have been looking to sample the wares at Harvey's New York Bar and Grill for a week or two now.
So tonight. we went for it!

On the plus side, the menu selection was very impressive.
It draws upon such places as Hard Rock Cafe for its inspiration, and considering they are a 'stand-alone' business and not a franchise, the variety is very good.
The decor is also quite impressive, and would not look out of place in a national chain of restaurants.
However, thats where the positives end.

I had the dozen chicken wings as a starter, (£4.99) and it was OK... just OK.
I suspect they had been fried a good while ago, and re-heated.   so a little less tasty than I would have hoped, but hey ho.

My main course was the 'Pulled Pork', .......the menu had 'recommended' marked by this dish. It costs £10.99
Well, they may recommend it, but I am afraid that I won't be.
Pulled Pork is a dish which Hard Rock Cafe specialise in, and its a big favourite of mine.
It looked fine on arrival, but I soon realised that it was tasteless and strangely watery.

Unlike me, I actually left some of it, I tried very hard to like it, but I just couldn't.

So, overall, I wish them well, and I think they will be packed out next holiday season... but if they are relying on repeat customers, then I think they might have to add a little more quality to the food itself.

Trip Advisor is filling up with third rate praise for the place.    :puke2:

Reading the Trip Advisor comments, Harvey's sounds like Fawlty Towers!

I would hasten to advise caution when looking at Trip Advisor reviews.. especially emotive ones like that.

I have been actually present (in Llandudno) when the proprietor of a local restuarant went out of his way to accomodate and placate a 'disgruntled customer'
The very next day a very spiteful and unfair review appeared on Trip Advisor...'Fawlty Towers' was mentioned there too!
It was discovered that this disruptive person was actually a local competitor of this restaurant, who was hell bent on ruining the reputation of the local restaurant.

I think that anyone posting on threads such as this, or the 'recommend a local trader' one should refrain from commenting or simply agreeing with the previous poster... or WORSE, agreeing with an anonymous Trip Advisor review.

I would advocate taking a wider and more balanced sample of opinions, or better still, spend some money and discover it for yourselves.
I always look at a large sample of reviews before booking, say, a hotel.

There's a couple of reviews of Harvey's now on Qype, one awarding them five out of five and other one out of five.  Whatever else the place clearly manages to divide opinion.  I hope they manage to sort things out because I'd be surprised if they have anything on the menu that I wouldn't like (assuming it was cooked properly) but I don't feel I can justify the outlay based on what I've heard at the moment.  Hopefully it's just teething problems and they'll get things sorted in due course.

:o spend money on eating out!! Me?  _))*  We had a quick look in there last Saturday, a quick look at the menu and we could see no obvious vegetarian options that appealed and the prices were far too high for us anyway!

Thats another good point which I forgot, there were no menu boards outside, or in the window.
So you must have gone inside.
Whilst Dave and I were in, several people appeared outside and looked in, but they didn't enter as they didn't want to look foolish or be embarrassed by asking prices.  It is vital to have a menu, complete with prices, facing outwards.

A few places seem to do that for some reason, I'm perfectly happy to go in and check it out, if I don't like the look of it, or the prices I'm out of there!  ;)
