A bit of an update on the above ......

A STUDENT has given a fascinating behind-the-lens insight on what it was like photographing the late Christopher Somerville.

Mr Somerville, who ran the Harlequin Puppet Theatre in Rhos on Sea, Britain's first permanent puppet theatre, died earlier this year aged 83.

Kev Curtis, of Colwyn Bay, is a self-taught photographer. He is currently studying for a BA Hons degree in photography at Llandrillo College.

My Grandmothers old church..................There is a rumour, that it has been bought by the Jewish community for holiday purposes?

THE METHODIST Church in Rhos-on-Sea has been sold to a developer from Manchester.

The church, at 49 Rhos Road, closed at the end of August 2022 after nearly 100 years of service.

Its closure was attributed to a dwindling parish size, with older and fewer parishioners unable to manage the workload of maintaining the premises.

It has now been sold to a developer from Manchester, who will be keeping the building as it is. The site will undergo a renovation.

Stunning new 'tideless' beach in North Wales is making the neighbours envious
Rhos on Sea reopened its 'rivieria' sandy beach this week just as Llandudno relaunched a campaign to restore its rock-covered beach

Users breathlessly labelled it part of a new three-mile ?Welsh Rivieria? in the Bay of Colwyn. Since then, the resort and its golden sand have been dubbed ?Costa del Rhos?.

A MAN is set to realise his ?dream? as he prepares to open his own butchers shop in Rhos-on-Sea.

Lee Coates and his family and friends are putting the final pieces in place for the opening of Coates Butchery, which will be located at 14 Everard Road.

Lee, who has been in the butchery trade for 12 years, started out as a Saturday boy on the same premises that he will soon call his own (in what was then Humphreys of Rhos-on-Sea).

The business opening will see him achieve a dream he has had since 16, and he will run it with his partner, and aims to pass it onto his daughter in the future.

Rhos-on-Sea RECAP after fire saw black smoke tower above town
The incident happened this afternoon and firefighters were there for hours

A huge plume of black smoke has been seen drifting above a North Wales coastal town. The towering plume is as a result of a fire at a building in Rhos-On-Sea, Conwy, near one of the town's Co-Op supermarkets.

Fire crews are on the scene and people are being asked to avoid the area.

I don't think this has been posted previously but apologies if it has. In the i paper yesterday it reported that the Harlequin Puppet Theatre in Rhos on Sea has been grated Grade 11 listed status in honour of its 65th anniversary. It reports, "The Harlequin Puppet Theatre in Rhos on Sea in Conwy, North Wales, was given the listing by the Welsh Government's historic environment service, Cadw, for its, "special architectural and historic interest". It continues, "Theatre bosses said it was a "significant milestone for the first purpose built puppet theatre in Britain which opened on 7 July 1958". "A spokesman for Cadw, which works with owners to protect historic buildings and structures, landscapes and heritage sites of Wales, said the puppet theatre had been listed for, "its special architectural and historic interest as an extremely rare example of a purpose built puppet theatre". "It is the first permanent example in the UK and well preserved interpretation of the Festival of Britain style" they added. "The theatre is an unusual piece of post war architecture by Gwilym Parry Davies and Eric Bramall, with great historic interest as the home of Lili Lon and many other much loved characters".

NEW SEATING has been installed on Rhos-on-Sea promenade, and has proven to be a hit with residents.

Wave seats, deck chairs, higher seating and more varieties have been unveiled along the promenade, as work continues on the coastal defence and infrastructure improvement project.

With one million tonnes of imported sand, the beach at Rhos-on-Sea fully reopened on April 6.

I nearly commented yesterday, about how long they would last, but I thought maybe this time......Must be getting soft.....

NEW SEATING on Rhos-on-Sea promenade has already been damaged, just days after the section opened to members of the public.

Wave seats, deck chairs, higher seating and more varieties were unveiled along the promenade last week, as work continues on the coastal defence and infrastructure improvement project.

Residents had praised the new seats, with one saying it looked ?fabulous?, and catered ?for all kinds of people of different ages and abilities?.

But it seems this excitement wasn?t felt by all, with a seat near the phone charger unit already being damaged, with its metal bars pulled apart.

One resident said: ?Oh well, things were always going to get damaged, but not this quickly - well done if this was your handwork.?

Another resident said it was ?awful?, and showed ?no respect? for the work that had been done.

MEMBERS of the public have been warned not to swim or paddle in the sea at Rhos-on-Sea due to the levels of bacteria, the council said.

Notices against swimming in the sea were put out on Saturday, after regular water testing by Natural Resources Wales.

The notices read: ?You are advised not to swim or paddle in the sea.

?There is increased risk that water quality may be affected by pollution.?

This warning remains in place, with the NRW keeping the council updated on test samples, and when it will be safe enough to return.

A Conwy County Borough Council spokesperson said: ?We were notified about levels of bacteria in bathing water at North Shore and Cayley Promenade by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) who carry out regular water quality testing.

?Notices advising against swimming or paddling in the sea were put out on Saturday.

?NRW are keeping us updated with results on test samples.?

Aerial shots capture progress made on ?20m Rhos on Sea beachfront
Work on the promenade is taking shape

The new raised beach has long reopened, but the works on the promenade are still ongoing. In their latest update, Conwy Council said they were aiming to have as much of the work completed as possible before the school summer holidays, but there's still some way to go.

As the aerial pictures in our gallery below show, much of the work on the prom is starting to take shape. The pedestrian walkway is fully open along the seaside railings as are all the access points to the beach.

A DAMAGED and disabled yacht that drifted off the coast of Rhos-on-Sea was rescued last night (August 29).

The Rhyl RNLI crew were alerted by the coastguard co-ordinating centre in Holyhead, who had received reports of a yacht with damaged sails and a disabled engine.

The all-weather lifeboat was launched at 9.21pm in rain and poor visibility, and proceeded at best speed to the yacht's last known position to the north of Rhos-on-Sea.

The lifeboat arrived at the scene at 10.06pm, to find the yacht's sail was damaged and the boat was drifting.

A COMMEMORATIVE fountain in Rhos-on-Sea that was lying in pieces has been reassembled, as part of the coastal defence work in the town.

The memorial fountain is dedicated to Rev W. Venables Williams, who served as the vicar of the parish of Llandrillo-yn-Rhos for 31 years in the late 19th century.

It was left lying in a ?sorry state?, but has now been restored as the town undergoes a major renovation with the ongoing coastal defence and promenade project.
