Re: Everything to do with Rhos On Sea..... Saint Trillo's church

I have not visited the site for years............Must do better

The smallest church in the British Isles and why it's found on a North Wales beach
The church sits in an alcove looking over the sea, a patch of history that feels out of place in its surroundings.

Many historical buildings and landmarks are situated around North Wales, even the simplest journeys can take you past buildings far older than those around them, sitting out of place to their surrounds. This history leaves fascinating titbits to be explored and wondered about as you explore the beaches, mountains and towns of the region.

For those that call these places home it can be easy to forget about places you see everyday, walking past these wonders, as they blend into the background of our home towns and villages. One such piece of history is Saint Trillo's church in Rhos-on-Sea, which sits tucked away in its own alcove overlooking the sea.

The church itself is still active and has been for nearly 1500 years, yet it is easy to miss because of its size, offering only a total seating for six people within the church, all set into a single small space. Anyone is welcome to enter the church today, which keeps its doors open for those wishing to visit.

A controversial one-way system along Rhos-on-Sea promenade was given the green light by Conwy?s cabinet yesterday afternoon. The decision was made despite appeals from councillors who complained the proposals were dangerous ? as residents feared a residential area would be overrun by traffic.

Cabinet?s decision follows the plans being backed by Conwy?s economy and place overview and scrutiny committee two weeks ago. Cllr Jo Nuttall said she had taken part in a 100-strong protest against the plans last Saturday.

Cllr Nutall said she wanted the council to deviate from its plans for the one-way system ? but hinted she feared the extra cost this could incur could dissuade councillors. "I speak on behalf of myself, Cllr Gareth Jones, and many Rhos residents, 100 or more of whom protested with us on Saturday afternoon,? she said.

Delight as Rhos-on-Sea Rotary?s Tree of Lights returns!

A LARGE crowd gathered on the Cayley Promenade in Rhos-on-Sea on Sunday, November 27 to witness the Rotary Tree of Lights switch-on.

This was the first time the public had been able to gather since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

The Tree of Lights is an opportunity for the public to remember loved ones and celebrate the coming of Christmas.

Dr Lyndon Miles, from St David?s Hospice, updated the crowd on new developments and the continuing work of the charity.

Rotary president Pauline Hogan said: ?We were so pleased to invite the public to witness the switch-on this year following such difficult times.

?All proceeds from the Tree of Lights will go to support the fantastic work of St. David?s Hospice in Llandudno.?

THE OWNER of the Cayley Kiosk which is currently being demolished has thanked customers for their support, as he looks forward to its replacement being built.

Mr Salem has been given a temporary bus kiosk until the new kiosk is constructed, but says it was difficult to say goodbye to his previous site after 21 years.

Moussa says the Council has assured him that when the new kiosk is built it will be his, and is grateful to both the Council and members of the public who supported his livelihood

THE Cayley kiosk in Rhos-on-Sea was demolished last week to kick start plans to build a replacement kiosk in the vicinity.

The Cayley was a popular hub for the community, and was owned by Moussa Salem, a well-known figure in the area.

Mr Salem said he was "really sad to see it go", but looked forward the reconstructed kiosk being completed.

Having stood on the West Promenade for more than 50 years, Conwy County Borough Council took possession of the site on November 14 with plans to demolish.

A house in Rhos on Sea was gutted by a "significant" fire yesterday afternoon that saw a road blocked for hours. Two fire engines, Police and Welsh Ambulance Service were called to the house on Colwyn Crescent in Rhos on Sea during the afternoon of Friday January 21.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the blaze, although there has been significant damage to the house. The one way street was closed off for several hours whilst fire crews dealt with the incident.

Crews were still at the scene until shortly before 7pm. The cause of the fire has been undetermined after several hours of investigation works at the property.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: ?We received a call at 13:03 to a property fire on Colwyn Crescent in Rhos on Sea. We sent two appliances, Both being from different locations, Colwyn Bay and Llandudno.

My sister and I attended one of the first shows in 1958.................

We are saddened to announce the death of the Harlequin Puppet Theatres director Christopher Somerville.

Chris had been a puppeteer and integral part of the Harlequin since its opening by Eric Bramall in 1958. Throughout that time he performed countless shows, both at the theatre and on TV, worked independently as a cabaret performer with puppets and magic and entertained thousands of children with his Punch and Judy as Mr BimBamBoozle. Since the death of Eric in 1996 he worked tirelessly to ensure the theatre continued; performing all shows, as well as every other element of theatre life, on his own - an achievement he was very proud of.

His funeral will take place on Friday 24th February at 2pm at St Joseph's Catholic Church, Colwyn Bay (LL29 7LG). Family flowers only please, with donations to be made to Hope House Children?s Hospice.

This brings back memories and I recall going to the Harlequin Puppet Theatre many years ago. It was either the 1960s, 0r 1970s. It was a different type of performance and thoroughly enjoyable. They did well to keep it open for so long.

So sorry to learn this - I have talked about visiting the Puppet Theatre for many years. Does anyone know if someone can take over, or will it close for good?
