Llandudno among UK's best seaside towns for food and drink

A seaside town located in North Wales has been named among the UK's best for food and drink.

From St Andrews in Scotland and St David's in Pembrokeshire to Fowey in Cornwall, Which? has come up with a list of the best seaside towns in the UK for food and drink.

The results are based off a survey of around 5,000 of the consumer watchdogs members.

Introducing the list, Which? said: "The food available at the British seaside has improved hugely.

Llandudno was one of three seaside towns in Wales to feature among the UK's best for food and drink.

It recorded four stars from the Which? survey along with a destination score of 78%, just 4% behind St Andrews which claimed top spot.

Still only two thirds of the way towards the top seaside towns.  For us, Signatures can stand alongside the best Michelin restaurants anywhere.  But it's not in Llandudno sadly.

Mrs H and I went to the Dudley and George dog cafe in Upper Mostyn Street today and it was a very nice and also interesting experience.    The atmosphere is very relaxing and all the dogs were made welcome and they were also very well behaved.     Apart from that we enjoyed a nice latte and delicious cakes too.
We'll be going back there again soon but I don't think that we'll be taking our dog Teddy with us until he calms down a bit

Re: Cafes, Restaurants, Pubs & Takeaways.....New tips law

A cafe worker says she will be able to treat her grandmother to extra gifts this Christmas thanks to a new law which means staff will receive all tips left by customers.

Leah Williams is one of thousands of workers in cafes, restaurants and beauty salons across Wales who will benefit from the legislation change.

Companies currently have the choice whether to keep tips made via card or pass them on to employees, while cash tips belong to staff.

According to the UK government, millions of workers in the UK are expected to take home a total of £200m more.

Re: Cafes, Restaurants, Pubs & Takeaways.....Fish and chips price rise

Fish and chips is a British family favourite equally enjoyed around the table on a Friday night or out of the paper on an often overcast beach.

But the deep fried delicacy has seen the biggest price increase of some of the UK’s most popular takeaways, according to new figures.

The average price for a portion of fish and chips rose more than 50% to nearly £10 in the five years to July – while the cost of a kebab went up 44% and pizza 30%.

Chip shop owners cite a "perfect storm" of costs in recent years, including soaring energy bills, tariffs on seafood imports and extreme weather hammering potato harvests.

A PUB in Llandudno which opened less than a year ago has been crowned the cider pub of the year for North Wales.

Cask & Apple, at 29 Mostyn Avenue, Craig-y-Don, was named ‘CAMRA North Wales Cider Pub of the Year’ at an awards ceremony last night (August 29).

It also picked up the ‘Abercolwyn CAMRA Branch Cider Pub of the Year’ award.

A real ale and cider bar, Cask & Apple opened in December 2023 and is run by John and Sharon Sumbland.

Mrs H has been to the Kava in Upper Mostyn Street Llandudno before and this morning she treated me to breakfast in the cafe.    It was my first time there and I was very impressed by the place.   There is a nice friendly atmosphere about the place and the food was delicious and well presented
We'll definitely be going back there next week and will probably go for lunch next time but Mrs H is going back there tomorrow with a friend

UK chain Greggs plans to open a new cafe and takeaway bakery in a Conwy village. The bakery giant has expanded across the region in recent years - popping up in most towns and along busy roads like the A55.

Its latest application is for a new site on the roadside in Mochdre, near Colwyn Bay. The chain wants to take on one of the units built by furniture shop Julia Jones after they redeveloped their site.

I enjoyed another breakfast at Kava's in Upper Mostyn Street yesterday.    They serve breakfast all day so that's very handy to know.     The meal was delicious, well presented and you get a nice warm welcome from the staff when you go there

Hotel Chocolat has begun hiring staff for its first site in North Wales. The luxury chocolatier is aiming to take on an empty unit at Parc Llandudno and believes it will pull in customers from the wider region.

The company is currently expanding its bricks-and-mortar presence with a plan to open 12 new outlets in 2024. It aims to create a gift store and "Velvetiser" cafe at its Llandudno outlet, creating up to 20 full and part-time jobs in the town.

A planned opening is scheduled for February 2025 and job adverts have appeared online for a store manager (£29,500 salary) and an assistant manager (£26,000). They will be expected to lead the retail team and “deliver 100% happiness through chocolate to every customer”. Incentives include 50% staff discounts and 70% off a stay in the company’s hotel on the Caribbean island of St Lucia.

Re: Cafes, Restaurants ....M&S Digital self-ordering screens divided opinion

I admit to being impatient and cannot be bothered with new tech...............  :o

'All I wanted was coffee but it took ages' - the M&S Llandudno touchscreens that divide opinion
Love them or hate them, digital ordering systems are here to stay

In the battle for High Street market share, in-store innovations are emerging that range from holographic staff to speaking signage and AI digital assistants. But for some people, tech novelties are a step too far, as some Marks & Spencer customers have been highlighting.

Complaints have been raging ever since the company moved from its old Mostyn Street home in Llandudno to a former Debenhams store on Parc Llandudno retail park. In the store’s new-look café, digital self-ordering screens were introduced and a cohort of customers weren’t impressed. They’re still not, some 30 months later.

Sushi - a Japanese rice meal usually with seafood - is one of the most popular dishes in Ukraine. So it says on Llandudno's new sushi takeaway's Facebook page.

Exactly why it goes down so well in Ukraine isn't entirely clear but a Ukrainian couple hope to spread the word in North Wales. Edward and Uliana have opened a business called Wasabi in an empty shop in Craig-.y-Don in the seaside town.
