The Midland will close its tapas restaurant in Conwy. It was revealed in early December that the restaurant on Castle Street was up for lease due to a "relocation".

Now bosses have confirmed it will close on Sunday, February 11. The Midland restaurant in Beaumaris is not affected.

They blamed the cost of living crisis as well as the impending reduction in business rates support from Welsh Government from April. Welsh Government took the decision in the draft budget in December to reduce rates support for retail, hospitality and leisure from 75% to 40% for 2024/25 - a decision slammed by businesses and opposition parties.

The Midland said: "With profound regret, we must announce the closure of our Midland Conwy restaurant from Sunday 11th February. This difficult decision has been looming over us, exacerbated by the cost of living crisis that has notably impacted the hospitality sector and, in turn, our valued patrons.

I had lunch at the Toad in Colwyn Bay on Saturday for the first time since just before lockdown in 2020.    It was good to be back there and the place still retains its old charm and the food was delicious too.
I won't leave it so long before I go next time but Covid and an arson attack on the place accounted for the lost years

THIS week the Great British Menu will feature some of the brightest talents from Wales.

Tonight's episode (Tuesday, February 20) will see three newcomers join the competition.

These include Corrin Harrison from mid-Wales, who has spent most of his career at one of the UK?s best restaurants, Ynyshir, and has just set up a sister restaurant to it in Machynlleth.

From Llandudno is inventive chef, Nick Rudge. After training under Heston Blumenthal, he created a takeaway business during lockdown in 2021. It was a sell-out success, so he opened his own restaurant in Conwy, The Jackdaw, creating surprising dishes.

AN AWARD winning vegan bistro in Rhuddlan is up for two more gongs!

Green Island Bistro on Rhuddlan High Street, owned by Sara Turner, has been nominated for both the 'Best Vegetarian Establishment' and 'Vegan Restaurant of the Year' in the Food Awards Wales 2024.

The awards look to honour the top culinary destinations in Wales.

Sara said: "We are nominated for both Best Vegetarian Establishment and Vegan Restaurant of the Year. Best vegan establishment is a new category which is fantastic to see and it would mean so much for us to win either category, especially as there are only a couple of businesses included from North Wales.

Sara recently opened Llandudno's first 'plant powered cafe' - Pip & Oat.

THE leaseholder of a popular pub in Colwyn Bay has criticised the chancellor for putting ?another huge nail into the hospital industry coffin? through the Spring Budget.

Jeremy Hunt MP confirmed on March 6 that, from April, the amount small businesses can earn before they must register to pay VAT will rise from ?85,000 to ?90,000.

This will mark the first time this rate has increased in the past seven years, but Pete Hammond, of The Toad, on West Promenade, said VAT is ?absolutely killing the industry?.

The worrying response to restaurant's candid post after one of 'quietest days ever'
It is well documented that the hospitality industry has been hit hard recently with several prominent businesses shutting up shop

A Welsh restaurant has shared that they experienced "one of the quietest days" they've ever had this week in a bid to reassure struggling businesses that they are not alone. Catch 22 Brasserie in Anglesey shared the candid post on their social media page amid the hospitality industry's ongoing crisis.

In the first three months of 2024 alone, growing numbers of prominent restaurants in Wales have announced their closures amid the perfect storm of changes to business rates and the increased cost of living. And for those who are managing to stay afloat, it seems that footfall is lower than ever.

Meet the canine taste testers who turned North Wales pub into UK?s best during 'shocking' times
The Tal-y-Cafn was relaunched during Covid and is again facing adversity

A pub hotel in the Conwy Valley has been saluted for its family ethos and, specifically, for the VIP treatment it gives its canine customers. On arrival at The Tal-y-cafn, dogs are each provided with a bowl of water and a comfortable blanket to lie on.

Once settled down on teddy bear fleece, their owners might care to examine the dog menu. It?s really quite extensive: some human equivalents don?t offer this many dishes.

We had a short drive down the Conwy Valley to Talgoed Nursery in Glan Conwy to have a breakfast there.     The place was packed but I'm not surprised as not only is the food delicious and good quality but the staff are brilliant.
At 4.00 pounds it represents excellent value for money and we're hoping to go back there again next week

HEARTLESS thieves snatched charity boxes from a caf? during a break-in.

Seymour?s Caf?, in Llandudno, took to Facebook on Friday, March 29 (Good Friday), to say they were one of five businesses in Llandudno that has been broken into.

They added: "They smashed the glass and got in which resulted in them taking the till (even though this was left open and empty).

"They broke the cake domes and even stole the charity boxes.

"Luckily for us the till was found down an alley way not too far from us so we have managed get it back.
