Just an excuse for me to post some of the adverts I've just uploaded really but feel free to comment, add anecdotes etc...

Like the description. Llandudno's gay promenade! ???
-
Am I right in thinking that the Dorchester is now the Amalfi Court apartments down on Craig Y Don promenade?
-
Its amazing how stylish the frontage of the Empire is now, compared to the 70's.
But, what is (or was) that building down to the right. (On the corner of Ty Gwyn Rd and Church Walks?)
It looks crenallated, like a castle turret.

So would what is now The Dorchester Apartments have been the Bedford?

Yes. Bit confusing, isn't it! And 'The Mistrals' was built on the site of the petrol station.
-
Ahhh, thanks Dave.
What looked like a medieval arrow loop, was actually a telegraph pole, crossing a roofline!
All is as it should be.

The Regent Court had an indoor swimming pool that I used to frequent in the '90's. Not many locals knew it existed, so more often than not, you had the pool to yourself.

Trojan these are great but you worry me being up and on the net at 3.00 a.m.!
-
Its not 3.a.m to him.... he's doing this from the USA !
-
Oh I didn't realise.
Have you got the Craigside Hydro leaflet with a photo of a little girl-guess who?- in the tv screen as if it's a live transmission if you know what I mean.
-
Yes.. Mr Trojan plies his trade many thousands of miles away from his beloved Llandudno..
Here is a nice view of the West Shore at sunset to make him feel homesick .... followed by another one involving a cold beer! Unbeatable.
-
Ah ha, taken from the Lilly, formerly the Sandringham Hotel (while we're on the subject).
Yes, West Shore sunsets are always something special.

It's the Tudno Castle Hotel.......actually. ;D
-
I'm still amazed that the Tudno Castle was closed fully furnished and just left. All of that furniture and fittings could have been donated to one of the Furniture Reclaim charities.

It's the Tudno Castle Hotel.......actually. ;D
Yes of course,what an idiot
Is it still for lease, this pdf is pretty old now http://www.propertypilot.co.uk/pdf/160+667.PDF (http://www.propertypilot.co.uk/pdf/160+667.PDF)
-
I think you will find that letting advert was for the property after it was rebuilt and refurbished.
In order for the property to be let, I also think the Tudno Castle was sold subject to contract to Travelodge UK, whose parent company is the Dubai International Company..
I do not know but I guess the sale of the Tudno Castle did not go through after planning permission failed and it may still be owned by the original company with local connections unless someone can post differently.
-
I've heard Premier Inns™ have bought the Clarence.
No idea if it's true.
-
Let's hope the Clarence Hotel news is true, it's an absolute eyesore at the moment.
Tudno Castle Hotel is still owned by Ashley Moore of Conwy Estates/West Bay Capital, as far as I know.
-
If Premier Inn have purchased and will refurbish the Clarence Hotel then visitors to Llandudno will be able to book a family room for £29 per night and walk over to Wetherspoons to eat and drink at bargain prices.
The only problem will be where to park their cars for nothing?
-
Have you ever tried to get a room for £29.00 ? They only seem to have a limited No. of nights for the year.
-
I often get them - just have to book far enough in advance. Also not every hotel participates all the time. Depends on what is going on locally e.g. Horse racing or F1 etc.
-
We stayed in one for £29 close to Gatwick Airport on the 28 February 2011.
It was brand new and the service was first class.
-
I'm still amazed that the Tudno Castle was closed fully furnished and just left. All of that furniture and fittings could have been donated to one of the Furniture Reclaim charities.
I wonder if the owner is still paying business rates to CCBC with all that furniture still inside. *&(

Well I still think of it as he North Western Hotel and if it was knocked down the site would be great for a multi screen cinema. we sell ourselves as he premier resort of Wales and there's no where to go when it rains, a cinema would be great.

Is the Brinkburn now the Ambassador?
-
Its good to see that there is scaffolding up around two of Llandudno's hotels, which were getting close to 'Eyesore' status.
(At least externally they were).
There is now work underway at both The Ambassador and the Four Oaks, both on the Promenade.
Recently, I was with Dave R when I remarked on the poor state of The Ambassador.
Apparently I voiced my loud opinion right in front of the owner!! Well, maybe he listened to me.... L0L
-
Is the Brinkburn now the Ambassador?
Yes. http://www.hotelambassador.co.uk/historyhotel.html (http://www.hotelambassador.co.uk/historyhotel.html)
The Ambassador was formerly 5 separate Hotels: The Brinkburn situated on the corner of The Promenade and St. Georges Place, The Tegwell situated on the sea front promenade, The Bodond situated on St. Georges Place, Baldwin House situated on St. Georges Place and Glyn Isa also on St. Georges Place.

I think it was 1972 the last time there was scaffolding up there :D

I thought Mostyn Estates insisted all the hotels on the promenade had to be re-painted on a regular basis.
Perhaps, the landowners do not own all the land on the front then.
-
They used to paint them using long ladders. A friend, who was a painter, was up a Triple extension ladder a few years ago, just when health & safety legislation was being enacted, when he was called down by an officious looking gent. when he finally arrived at pavement level, the gent, said that he was a Health & Safety Inspector, and that the ladder was the largest that he had ever seen, and what's more that He NEVER WANTED to SEE it AGAIN. GET it DOWN and take it away. :'(

Castle Hotel. A fitting memorial to Degsy Livingstone - bless him.
When I was an apprentice gas fitter I had the delightful experience of working in all the hotel kitchens in Llandudno. I vowed never, ever to willingly have a meal in a hotel as long as I lived. Except the Risborough.

Anyone got any knowledge of The Castleton Hotel maybe in Gloddaeth st we think it was run by the Lines family in 60s-70s Ta
-
In the 1969 Directory it is listed as Castleton Private Hotel Gloddaeth Avenue in the Trades Section and in the Street section, the listing is in the name of Ronald G. Line. The property is not numbered, but its nearest neighbours are Llwyn on one side and on the other side Awelon, which I think places it at the West Shore end as there is a house named Castleton there which can be seen on Streetview
-
Thanks Sue some guests of mine stayed there as children :-*

Thanks for the nice comments all, no I've collected them over the years. Most of my collection are the relatively common postcards that have already been posted but I spent an enjoyable couple of hours last night going through the forum and seeing what was posted and then picking through my collection and posting the different ones I had. There are more that I will post when I get a minute :)

Always interesting to see the more unusual postcards, thanks for adding them, Jack. $thanx$

I've never seen that Pets Corner building before. Anyone know exactly what it was?

Trojan, you've beaten me to it - I was going to ask about "Pets Corner", too!

Perhaps Dave can shed some light on this? 8)

And a few more :D
-
Cool! <:>
First time I've seen a photo of the Links Hotel as the Mostyn Arms.
-
You surprise me, Trojan, there has always been one hung up in the lounge bar of the Links Hotel.
I think there is also an old photograph of the previous Mostyn Arms in there as well when it was located next to St Hilarys Church and before Her Ladyship relocated it down the road.
-

Just a small petting zoo, I expect?
-
Maybe where the local lads would get in touch with their girl friends! L0L
-
GFS Lodge on Church Walks. I believe it stands for Girls Friendly Society and has a similar role to the YWCA?
-
Now Space? previously The Quinton?

:-[ I blame John Willie Lees and Arthur Guinness for distracting my attention. $drink$

The Grove Boarding House later became the Grove Restaurant and is currently a rapidly declining block of flats. Speaking of which, several of the buildings in Upper Mostyn Street (notably the ones which have flats above the shops) seem to have very undesirable people living in them. I witnessed a local business owner having an altercation with a woman who was attempting to kick in a door at the side of his premises only the other day. The woman and her partner are known drug addicts - imagine trying to run a business with these people swearing at each other at the top of their voice only feet away from your customers...

Yes Dave, and only FEET from the queue for Home Cooking too.
Its a disgrace, and the landlords of some of these 'apartments' should take action, and be ashamed of what they are allowing to reside in a conservation area.
-
Here are a couple more postcards, I've included them in Hotels of Llandudno but they might have been private residences :)
-
The Hawthorn - that was run as a guest house by Mr & Mrs McElroy in the 1960's & 70's.
They hailed from Liverpool originally.
One of their sons John had a motorcycle repair shop close to the rear of the Hawthorne in Brookes Street.
Another of their sons Allan, sadly died in a motorcycle accident when riding pillion on a motorcycle near the Links Hotel. I believe the motorcycle came into contact with a bus.
Their other siblings, Arthur, Ian and Ann still live locally, whilst Jean lives somewhere in England I believe.

That picture brought back some good memories for me. This was the first hotel I ever stayed in. It would have been in the early sixties.
I was invited to join a friend and her mother for a week's holiday there. I remember the excitement of walking towards the hotel in the late afternoon and looking at the menu to see what was for the evening meal. It was the first time I ever had prawn cocktail!
-
Since you've mentioned it....
-
This was Room 101 in the Ormescliffe Hollins. I expect you had a "room with a view?" ;)
It's now the Regency Royal Hotel. http://www.regencyroyalhotel.co.uk/ (http://www.regencyroyalhotel.co.uk/)
(The restaurant is very good, maybe you could return sometime for a prawn cocktail)
-
O'h, thanks for those pics. The interiors are so interesting. I particularly like the one with the fire. I am always on the lookout for hotel rooms that still have fires. I stayed in one in Bath last year that had a coal fire in the room.
Actually I don't have any memory of the room we had back then but I can remember the restaurant and the menus. O'h dear, what does that say about me!
-
Does anyone have a copy of the photo. referred to previously of the pub which used to be next door to St. Hilary's church. Family buried there now. It's only recently we found out that Lady Augusta Mostyn didn't like it being so close to the church so had it moved down Conwy Road.

I had the misfortune to book in there a few years ago - and walk straight out again after seeing the state of our room! You should see some of the slatings it has on Trip Advisor... I wish I'd looked there before I booked!
-
Does anyone remember The Queensway on the prom? It was owned by Tom & Rae Owen back in the 1960's.
-
I remember the Hotel because I used to see their son Ronnie in town when we were in our teens. I think Ronnie used to go to the Wireless College in Colwyn Bay but I haven't heard anything about him for about 45 years

The queensway is now the right hand side of the whitehouse hotel. Next door to the old wavecrest which is now part of the somerset.
-
I also remember Ronnie, I last saw his parents in about 1972 and he was then in the Merchant Navy and, if I remember, was a Radio Officer.
He also had a band that used to practice at his parents' hotel in the winter months. They were called the "Shandelles" as a tribute to Del Shannon...

Hello everyone! Skimmed though the thread but couldn't find what I'm looking for. Anybody know anything at all about The Towers Hotel, Trinity Street in the 1920's ????????
-
I have an idea it was converted into apartments a few years ago.
-
You are quite right Bri. It was converted into good quality appartments a few years ago. It's the building on the corner of Charlton St and Trinity Square, not to be confused with the Balmoral Holiday Flats on the other corner which have had a major revamp also into appartments in the last 2/3 years.

I had a customer in my shop today, (a novelty in itself I suppose ) But he had an interesting tale to relate.
He arrived at one of the smaller promenade hotels today, and asked for a room for tonight.
He had noticed the hotel advertised on the internet yesterday.
When he tried to check in, he was told that despite being half empty, the usual price was higher than advertised online, which was via a room-booking website.
So, incredulous, he was forced to whip out his ipad, make the booking online, whilst standing in reception.... and could only check in when the confirmatory email came through!!
The only loser here is the hotel, who could have avoided paying the search company's commission.
His offer of cash or debit card were ignored. Crazy.
-
Hardly the best way of promoting good customer relations. Mike

I was looking for a hotel in Manchester last year and found a great one on laterooms.com for £100 (room only). After speaking to a friend who has a hotel in Llandudno I learned that laterooms charge 25% for any rooms they sell so I rang the hotel and explained to the receptionist that if she let me book the room directly for £87.50 we would both be £12.50 better off.
After a short pause she said "that sounds very fair and I'll throw in a couple of breakfasts aswell".
-
That's the way to do business! $good$

Sad news, The Belmont Hotel, at the junction of Church Walks and North Parade, is closing down.
It is the one run by the Royal Blind Society.
The staff have all been issued notice of redundancy.
-
Its been on the cards for quite a long time, but I'm still sorry its happened.
