Interesting story on the Penderyn whisky company, opening soon in Llandudno..........
The whisky novice who made Penderyn one of Wales' best-known brands turning over £15m
Former steel and logistics exec Stephen Davies has what must be one of the best jobs in Wales with a role at the helm of one of the nation's best-loved exports
Stephen Davies was working in the Netherlands as part of a global logistics business when he got a call from a former boss telling him he should visit a tin shed in a tiny village at the top of the Cynon valley.
The shed was home to a fledgling business called Penderyn Whisky Company – a distillery tucked away producing just a few barrels of the Welsh spirit that year but one with much bigger dreams.
"They were looking for someone to run the business and get it off the ground," said Stephen. It was 2003 and the Penderyn brand had been launched but they had no customers.
So how did a man with 20 years working in the steel and logistics industry wind up as someone in charge of a shed full of copper stills and one of the most iconic Welsh brands?
As Stephen admits himself he knew nothing about whisky apart from having developed a taste for the "elegant" spirit as a younger man. But what he did know was how to get stuff done.
