Back pain relief and osteoporosis prevention advice from Professor Tim Spector
He says drinking milk for healthy bones is a myth.
If you have back trouble from conditions like osteoporosis, you could alleviate the pain with a new diet according to nutritional scientist Tim Spector. And despite what we were told throughout our entire childhoods, he said guzzling milk isn't all it takes for healthy bones.

Professor Spector said it is not 'any one item' such as calcium or zinc that can reduce the impact of osteoporosis. The Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at King's College in London recently appeared on the Zoe podcast where he told listeners how a balanced diet can reduce the impact of the condition by 40%.

This site is picking up a lot of advice from Professor Tim Spector, the founder of Zoe Health, I would be interested to hear if you find it helpful.

Professor Tim Spector, the founder of Zoe Health, is encouraging people to eat more dark green vegetables. He said this can boost your gut health considerably and protect you against cancer and dementia.

Professor Spector referenced his research with the American Gut Project where he found eating 30 different plants weekly promotes many aspects of your health. He said this is 'one of the best things you can do' for your health.

I don't like the darker nights, last winter I bought a cheap adjustable desk light from Lidl, they had LED daylight bulbs, and pointed into the corner of a room, proved to be very effective.............

Dark, gloomy days making you feel SAD? How to tackle Seasonal Affective Disorder
If you struggle you can take steps now to make sure you enter winter with a clear plan in place to cope with the condition

Your mental health can suffer when dark evenings and cold weather arrives. The shift from summertime is even more difficult for those suffering with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Re: Health...........'Don't delay' making stroke 999 call - NHS
« Reply #274 on: November 05, 2024, 10:18:44 am »
A new campaign by the NHS in England is encouraging people who experience the first sign of a stroke not to delay calling 999, after analysis of calls made in the last year showed the average time to do so was nearly an hour and a half.

England's most senior doctor says stroke symptoms might not appear obvious or dramatic, but they are always a reason to act quickly.

About 100,000 people have a stroke each year in the UK and more than a third die from related issues, making it the fourth biggest cause of death in the UK.

The most common symptoms are struggling to smile or raise an arm, and slurring words when speaking.

NHS England says recognising any one of these signs in yourself or others and dialling 999 urgently is crucial to getting prompt, specialist treatment.

Yet the average time taken to make that emergency call was 88 minutes in 2023-24, NHS data reveals................https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce9g810m8kxo

The NHS will start offering an "improved" stop smoking pill to tens of thousands of people in England who want to quit cigarettes.

Varenicline, a daily tablet given over a few months, is as effective as vapes and more effective than nicotine replacement gum or patches, NHS England says.

The drug, which fights cravings, was available a few years ago on the NHS under the brand name Champix but was withdrawn due to some impurities. The new version has been approved as safe.

E-cigarettes, meanwhile, will "sometimes" be offered, often as a starter kit of about two weeks' worth of vapes by local NHS stop smoking services, officials said.

Varenicline is a prescription only medicine, which means people cannot buy it over the counter at a pharmacy or supermarket and will instead need to see their GP or an NHS stop smoking service to get it..............https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cq520wy6nplo

At 31 years old, I was told by doctors that if I didn’t stop drinking alcohol, I could die.

I was shocked because I didn’t drink every day, I never drank alone and I drank because I enjoyed it as a social activity, not because I felt alcohol-dependent.

But by definition, my alcohol consumption from my late teens to late 20s would be considered binge drinking. It felt normal because people around me were doing the same - and now it was catching up with me................ https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c30pre660mzo

Steve,  before I read the linked article I thought that you were having a mid life confession       ;D

Seriously though alcoholism is a serious matter and the alcoholics don't realise the devastating impact it has on themselves and the people who care about them.      It's ironic that alcoholism which is a life style is treated as an illness or disability and the alcoholic actually receives benefits for the life style they have chosen.
The same could be said for obesity, no one makes the person overeat that's their choice of a life style
Both conditions can be avoided but they are both a drain on the resources of the NHS

I had the same thing happen in Llandudno    I didn't drink too much but only because I didn't have the money.      With a Summer holiday job the £1.50 I earned for a 44 hour week didn't go very far.      The good old days!        8)

The good old days!        8)

Steve H: Yep.  Miss those old chimneys we had to climb, and nicking apples off the barrows, using plastic bags to keep the rain off when we were asleep, drinking A cup of cold tea. without milk or sugar - or tea - in a cracked cup, an’ all. Mind you, we never used to 'ave a cup. We used to have to drink out of a rolled up newspaper. The best we could manage most days was to suck on a piece of damp cloth. But you know, we were happy in those days, because we were poor. My old dad used to say to me, "Money doesn't buy you happiness, son." He was right.

Hugo: I was happier then and I had nothing! We used to live in this tiny, old, tumbled-down house with great big holes in the roof.

Dave R: House! You were lucky to live in a house! We used to live in one room, all twenty-six of us, no furniture, half the floor was missing, and we were all huddled together in one corner for fear of falling.

Ian: Eh, you were lucky to have a room. We used to have to live in the corridor...

Hugo: We used to dream of livin’ in a corridor. Would've been a palace to us. We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We got woken up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all over us!

Ian: Well, when I say 'house' it was just a hole in the ground covered by a sheet of tarpaulin, but it was a house to us!

Hugo: We were evicted from our hole in the ground; we had to go live in a lake!

Steve H: You were lucky to have a lake! There were a hundred-and-fifty of us livin’ in a shoebox in the middle of the road!

Ian: Cardboard box?

Steve H: Aye.

Hugo: You were lucky. We lived for three months in a newspaper in a septic tank. We used to have to get up every morning at six o'clock, clean the newspaper, go to work down the mill: fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence (6 pennies) a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep with his belt!

Ian: Luxury!  We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, work twenty hour day at mill for tuppence a month, come home, and dad would beat us around the head and neck with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!

Dave R: Well, of course, we had it tough. We used to have to get up out of the shoebox in the middle of the night, and lick road clean with tongues! We had to eat half a handful of freezing-cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at that mill for fourpence every six years, and when we got home... our dad would slice us in two with a bread knife.

Hugo: Right... I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, eat a lump of cold poison, work twenty-nine hours a day down the mill, and pay the mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home... our dad would kill us and dance about on our graves singing "Hallelujah."

Dave R: And you try to tell the young people of today that ... they won't believe you.
