No longer a joke - why Welsh wine is ready to be taken seriously.             $walesflag$

Welsh wine may traditionally have been seen novelty at best and a bit of a joke at worst.
But in the last decade, it has gone through a extraordinary boom.
The number of vineyards has soared and production has rocketed.
The wines, particularly the sparkling variety, have won plaudits across at competitions around the world where they have been described as “elegant and soulful”.

In the last 10 years, production has grown to around 100,000 bottles of wine a year and vineyards are still expanding in acreage and planting new vines.
And it is thought the number of vineyards in Wales, which currently stands at 17, could also more than double.

Anglesey has a few vineyards and the one at Llanbadrig near Cemaes Bay had a nice red wine appropriately named Draig Goch.    I had a few free sample tastes of various wines there but that was my favourite.
They also do nice coffees and cream scones too.      $good$

There appears to be a vineyard just outside Llandudno Junction that can be seen eastbound side of the A55?

Does anyone have any knowledge?

New Conwy vineyard part of fast emerging Welsh wine sector
Wales’ newest vineyard is preparing to raise a glass or two to celebrate the growing reputation of the country’s wine.

In the past fortnight Gwinllan Conwy near Llandudno Junction produced its first vintage, the quality of which has already sent murmurs of appreciation through the Welsh wine sector.

Owners Colin and Charlotte Bennett planted their first vines four years ago and in that time the number of vineyards in Wales has risen to 17.

Many thanks SteveH, I think that it would only be correct to do a liberal sampling of their offerings and report the findings back to the forum......

Tourism campaign promotes North Wales to travellers at London's Euston station.     $walesflag$

Hundreds of thousands of travellers at London’s Euston station are seeing North Wales in all its glory thanks to a new advertising campaign.
Commuters using the UK’s sixth busiest train station are told ‘North Wales is waiting for you’ on an unmissable Transvision screen showcasing the region’s majestic mountains, rivers and beaches.

The slogan features over a video of images showing viewers what North Wales has to offer in terms of adventure tourism, with clips of white water rafting, zip wires, surfing, mountain biking and climbing.

The escapist advert, which is about to enter its second week on the JCDecaux’s Transvision screen at the heart of Euston station, is the idea of AdventureMap who has joined forces with Visit Wales for the campaign as part of the 2016 Year Of Adventure.
AdventureMap is the collection of nine businesses from the region that specialise in every kind of adventure tourism, including Beacon Climbing Centre, Dragon Raiders Activity Park, National White Water Centre, Oneplanet Adventure, Plas y Brenin, RibRide, Surf-Lines, Surf Snowdonia and Zip World.

Marketing manager Jo Quinney said: “North Wales is the capital of adventure tourism, so it’s natural we take our message to the UK’s capital city.
“The message is one that will speak to work-weary Londoners and we hope they will flock here in search of adventure, giving a great boost to the whole economy of the region.
“After a day pounding the pavements and riding the tube, the mountains, beaches, rivers and greenery of North Wales will be calling to weary commuters.
And we want to remind them that our adventure destination is closer than they think – a Londoner could be here in a morning.

“Our range of mini breaks and adventures will provide inspiration and attract groups keen to experience activities such as coasteering, mountain biking, surfing, white water rafting and Europe’s longest and fastest zip wire, which all help to make North Wales the perfect escape from the grind of London.”

The AdventureMap project is part funded by Welsh Government through the Visit Wales regional engagement fund.

New Sunday market to be launched in Llandudno
A 12-week pilot project due to begin in July will see stalls set up along Madoc Street between from 8.30am to 5pm.

In a poll of 50 local businesses carried out by Llandudno Chamber of Trade last month, only two businesses did not support the move.

Ingrid Lewis, town manager and Conwy County Borough Council market officer, said: “It’s going to provide another attraction for Llandudno, it will welcome more people to the town centre and in the longer term it will attract more coach trips.
”It is going to be a mixture of top notch stalls run in partnership with an award winning established market operator.”

Diana Dean, owner of the Wool Corner in Madoc Street, said: “I’m one hundred per cent behind this because I think Madoc Street will be put on the map.
“I’ve tried to open on a Sunday and it has been absolutely dead.
”If the market was here I would open on a Sunday.”

Mike Smith, partner at Rooms and Blooms, said: “If it brings people down here, it’s got to be a good thing.”

Sam Cooper, owner of Let Them Eat Cake, said: “I think anything would benefit the street, it has absolutely nothing going on here.
“We have very little footfall down here. The street isn’t advertised people come into the town and they just go on Mostyn Street – they never make it to Madoc Street.”

On Friday, Llandudno town councilors are to debate a request for a traffic regulation, which has been made for the closure of Madoc Street (Lloyd Street to St Stephens Street) from 5am to 7pm each Sunday from July 3 to December 18 to accommodate the 12 week trial period.

Cllr Carol Marubbi, mayor of Llandudno, said: “Personally, I have no problem with the market, as long as it is suitable for everyone as to where it is situated.
“We’ve got to see the paperwork and how it will affect the road.”   ref pioneer

Excellent article promoting North wales

North Wales is the 'adventure capital of Europe' global business leaders are told.     $walesflag$

North Wales is fast becoming the adventure tourism capital of Europe with a world class portfolio of adrenaline-fuelled outdoor activity providers, who are working together to draw in visitors and boost the economy.

That was the message from industry leaders at the Go North Wales conference where the best of the region’s outdoor leisure industry was being showcased, during Liverpool’s International Festival of Business.

A conference programme of expert speakers curated by Jim Jones, MD of North Wales Tourism, included the people behind some of the region’s major success stories including Surf Snowdonia, Zip World , Rib Ride, and Carbon Zero.

Why North Wales is having 'a lot of success' in attracting Japanese tourists to the region...

Tourism operators are enjoying a boom in trade with more than half a million extra visits to Wales in the last year, according to new figures.

The statistics from the Great Britain Tourism Survey, sponsored by the Welsh Government's tourism arm Visit Wales, show that domestic trips from within Great Britain to Wales are up by 5.5% in the year to 2015-2016 from 9.97 million to 10.52 million trips.

The number of nights that people stayed in Wales is also up 2.8% from 35.2 million to 36.2 million over the same period.
Tourism already brings in £1.4m a day to Wales in the tourism industry, a total of £51 billion a year.

Colwyn Bay -based Jim Jones, of North Wales Tourism (NWT), welcomed the increase in visitors as "really good news".
He said it is "completely in sync" with what NWT believe is happening here in North Wales.
Mr Jones said: "We have invested heavily with support from Visit Wales in promoting the North Wales offer through a regionalised marketing campaigns in our domestic target market areas of the North West, Yorkshire, Cheshire and the Midlands.

"This includes promoting the 'Go North Wales' brand at Manchester Airport. We are currently negotiating with Liverpool Airport to do the same."
Mr Jones said regional airports are very important gateways into North Wales so it is "imperative" that our region has a presence in them.
NRT revealed overseas visitors to Wales from China and Japan are also being targeted.

Mr Jones said: "A few weeks ago I had the privilege of being invited to Manchester Airport for the Hainan airlines inaugural direct flight to Beijing. This (two way) route will operate four times a week, and has the potential of tapping into the Chinese visitor market with approximately 100,000 passengers expected to fly into Manchester.

"We have had a lot of success lately with the Japanese market , especially on the back of Conwy Town being nominated by the Japanese Association of Tourism Agencies as the most beautiful village in Europe - the only one on the list from the UK."
That accolade has seen a rise in Japanese tourist to North Wales, on top of the domestic visitors identified in the Wales Government report.

Mr Jones said the Brexit vote to leave the EU has created uncertainty so tourism bodies and operators must work together for success.

In my role as a Bodnant Laburnum Archer I have met a lot of Japanese - they even have their own travel guides and are on organised trips.   Always very pleasant and I can tell you that laburnum in Japanese is pronounced kibanafuji !!!

Australia, American, Germany and Austrian well represented in the people I have met, and all very complimentary about the gardens and the area.  I have also met visitors from New Zealand, Holland, France, Italy, India and Spain.

Could more nudist beaches in North Wales help boost region's economy?

More nudist beaches in North Wales could give a major boost to the economy, a naturist group claims.

Currently, the only officially designated “clothes-free” beach in the region is Morfa Dyffryn near Barmouth but if more were created it could attract thousands more people to the area, according to British Naturism.

Dozens of naturists have been flocking to Morfa Dyffyn as well as unofficial nudist sports Newborough and Llanddwyn beaches on Anglesey to enjoy the recent hot weather in the nude.

Andrew Welch, commercial manager at British Naturism, told the Daily Post there is “no doubt” that the economy in North Wales benefits from tourists visiting the region to enjoy nudist hotspots.

Llandudno arts festival LLAWN04 is back.
Three days of weird, wonderful and truly bizarre events are promised in Llandudno later this month as an action-packed arts festival returns to the town.
With this year's theme of Hide/Seek, LLAWN04 will be encouraging visitors to search out the inspiring and intriguing, with more than a few surprises in store running from September 23 to 25.

Artists from home and abroad have come together to create a series of events, happenings, displays and installations across four zones dotted around the seaside town.
Among the highlights are artist Kris Martin's spectacular full-sized hot air balloon - indoors and on Saturday night there's an outdoor cinema, showing Eighties' kids' favourite The Goonies on the Promenade.

All events are free but film fans are advised to book a £3 deckchair early to ensure a prime seat for the screening which takes place on Saturday (24) night.

LLAWN04 (which also means "Full04" in Welsh) also offers visitors the chance to make robots from discarded electronics; games on the lawn; music; dance; and puppetry.
