17/07/12 - Another great year of Green Flags in Conwy
Ten sites in Conwy County have scooped prestigious Green Flag Awards this year.
Wynn Gardens in Old Colwyn; Happy Valley Gardens in Llandudno; Bodlondeb in Conwy; Queens Gardens in Colwyn Bay; Cae Derw in Llandudno Junction; Pentremawr Park in Abergele; Llanrhos lawn cemetery and the Great Orme Country Park & Local Nature Reserve have all retained the green flag status this year.
And this year Bryn Euryn Local Nature Reserve/Tan y Bryn Allotments has also gained green flag status.
In addition, the Fairy Glen Local Nature Reserve in Old Colwyn has again received the Community Green Flag, reflecting the input of the Old Colwyn Environmental Federation.
The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales.
The award scheme began in 1996 as a means of recognising and rewarding the best green spaces in the country. It was also seen as a way of encouraging others to achieve the same high environmental standards, creating a benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas.
Conwy's Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Dave Cowans said, "These accolades are a testament to all the hard work by parks staff, countryside wardens, local community groups and residents. We're really pleased to have retained our existing green flags, as well as adding Bryn Euryn and Tan y Bryn to the list."
"Well done and thank you to everyone that put so much hard work into achieving these awards."
Notes
The awards will be presented by the Minister for the Environment & Sustainable Development, John Griffiths AM at a ceremony at the Royal Welsh Show on 23 July 2012.
