These eight common plastic items are banned in Wales from today
Ministers hope it will reduce littering and curb the country's 'throwaway culture'

Businesses, government bodies and charities ? even the Church in Wales ? have been running down stocks ahead of the switch to reusable or non-plastic alternatives. A similar ban was introduced in England on October 1, though the Welsh prohibition will eventually go further.

The "Phase 1" ban affects eight groups of products. From today, will be illegal to sell ? or give away for free ? to consumers in Wales any of the products listed below.

Single-use plastic plates. This includes paper plates with a laminated plastic surface.
Single-use plastic cutlery.
Single-use plastic drinks stirrers. Liquid food stirrers are also banned.
Cups made of expanded or foamed extruded polystyrene.
Takeaway food containers made of expanded or foamed extruded polystyrene.
Single-use plastic balloon sticks.
Single-use plastic-stemmed cotton buds.
Single-use plastic drinking straws. Exemptions are available for those who need them to eat and drink ?safely and independently?.

Almost 40,000 Wales fly-tipping incidents bring 55 fines

Clearing fly-tipping in Wales cost ?1.83m in the last year, according to latest figures.

In all 39,853 fly-tipping incidents were reported but just 55 fines issued.

Although the number of fly-tipping incidents reported across Wales fell slightly, there was still a rise in 12 local council areas.

Incidents in Wrexham quadrupled and dumping doubled in Ceredigion, although councils put this down partly to improving how tipping is reported.

This is 4% fewer than the previous year and less than recorded during the Covid lockdown period.

But it is 12% more than five years ago, according to the annual figures published by the Welsh government.

Re: Recycling across the area...Recycling electrical goods

A great idea......................

Recycling electrical goods could be done at kerbside and drop-off points in shops

Kerbside collections for small electrical goods such as toasters and hairdryers could be rolled out across the UK from 2026 under government proposals to boost recycling.

Ministers are also considering drop-off points in shops where households can recycle unwanted items for free.

Retailers would also be made to collect unwanted larger electrical items when delivering replacements.

Customers would no longer be charged for collection on delivery services.

Many retailers, such as B&Q, John Lewis and Currys, currently offer a paid-for collection service for large electrical appliances when customers buy a similar item.

The reforms are part of the government's plans to boost recycling, as it found 155,000 tonnes of smaller household electricals such as cables, toasters, kettles and power tools are wrongly thrown away each year.

New Welsh recycling laws coming into force this week - what you need to know
The new workplace recycling legislation comes into effect from Saturday and impacts businesses, charities and public sector organisations

A new recycling law is coming into effect in Wales from April 6. This means all businesses, charities and public sector organisations will have to separate their rubbish for recycling.

Just like many homes across Wales, businesses will also need to sort their recycling according to the new system. The Welsh Government has introduced this system to boost recycling in commercial businesses throughout the country.

Certain materials will need to be separated for collection. The changes apply to all workplaces including those in hospitality, retail and agriculture. NHS hospitals and private hospitals have two years to get ready for these changes.

Update on above..........

Businesses braced for new recycling law challenges

Cost, space and contamination are some of the worries facing business owners as a new workplace recycling law comes into force across Wales.

From Saturday, all businesses, public sector organisations and charities will be legally required to separate their waste ready for collection.

The Welsh government said the majority of businesses supported the new law and its response for non-compliance would be fair and proportionate.

Figures suggest 75% of business waste is recyclable - but it believed too much still ends up being sent to landfill, incineration plants or abroad.

The move forms part of plans to achieve net zero waste, external and reduced emissions by 2050.

Wales has been named the second best country in the world for recycling and is within touching distance of the top spot, new analysis shows.

Wales is listed just behind Austria in the global rankings, with both countries managing to recycle 59% of their waste.

Northern Ireland is ranked ninth, England 11th and Scotland 15th among the 48 countries included in the comparison.

First Minister Vaughan Gething said the "fantastic news" was thanks to the efforts of "householders and workplaces across Wales".

New cardboard recycling for Conwy county
New method will make recycling cardboard more efficient and eliminate the need for extra collection journeys

Conwy County Borough Council is introducing a new way for residents to recycle cardboard.

The new cardboard recycling bags are being delivered to households in October, and residents can use them straight away.

The weighted bags have a self-fastening lid to keep the contents dry, and a capacity of 72 litres. The bags will be emptied weekly by recycling crews at the same time as trolibocses and food waste bins.

The Council’s figures show that the amount of cardboard collected from households has increased significantly over the last few years.

“Since the pandemic, with the rise in online shopping and home deliveries, we’re now collecting an additional 214 tonnes of cardboard in a year,” said Cllr Geoff Stewart, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and the Environment.

“We introduced extra vehicles and drivers to collect large cardboard that didn’t fit in the trolibocs or the recycling truck. The recycling crew would collect up cardboard and leave it in piles for the extra vehicles, but we weren’t always able to collect all this cardboard on the same day.

"Residents told us they didn’t like these piles of cardboard in the street, which got wet in the rain.

“The new cardboard recycling bag means that residents know how much cardboard they can put out on recycling day, and they know it will be taken away. And our crews have space on their trucks for this set amount of cardboard, so we don’t need extra vehicles, which will make the service more cost-effective.”

Residents are being encouraged to break down boxes and tear them up to fit as much as possible in the bag. Extra cardboard can be saved for the next week’s collection, or taken for free to the household recycling centres.

Llandudno, well Craig-y-Don area at least , is a total mess at the moment due to the current storm conditions coinciding with our recycle collection day. If we continue to have these weather conditions on a regular basis maybe it's time something was done to avoid not only the litter situation but the cost of replacing damaged bins too. It all goes on the council tax expenditure bill which is apparently stretched to the limit already.
Anyone got any bright ideas?

We have the same problem up here on Colwyn Heights but if the wind is strong at night then don't put your bin out if it's due to be collected the following morning.
Instead get up and put your bin out just before your normal collection time.    Another thing is to put your house number on the bin just in case the bin blows away

That isn't necessarily going to cure the problem though Hugo. If it's windy during the day and the occupants are out at work. In our case the collection is so early we are still in bed!!

When CCBC. First introduced the trolley blocs they knew they were. Not fit for purpose,   We had meetings with them,   I said you did a trial run with so many properties  yes.   And the feed back was a 100% no good.   But 3 wagons have been in the builder st depot for over a year and you had ordered. Many thousands of the trolleys.  Yes.  But too late to turn back.    And the bosses wondered why we all laughed at them.
