I'm fairly sure it is the building currently called Steptoes. Unless I'm dreaming, above the main door is a glass panel with 'The Carlton' painted on it.

Looked in the archive and Carlton was at 94 and was a photographers studio in 1911.  However the Carlton Motors was in Carlton Road so why David Jones listed it as Abergele Road is a mystery to me.  Thanks anyway Dave. :-[

Sorry, I just looked though my photos and the place I'm thinking of was called The Embassy. Back to the drawing board on that one.  :(

Just come across this thre ad by accident whilst trying to se tup the forum from my new toy, an iPad and I'm in India. As far as I remember the Carlton, the embassy and in much later years Steptoes were more or less next to each other, or maybe even the same building at different times. But the Carlton was'ent a garage nor a photographers. I seem to remember it was an off licence or maybe a restaurant bu t that meant two next door to each other, unlikely. Also in that area was a. Building nicknamed "clock house" a nd I think t hat. Was also an off licence. So was this th e ca ration? Seems likely. The large clock remained for years and years after the businesses had gone. Indeed I must have a look when I get back, it might be still there.  Please excuse bad typing, taking a lot of getting used to. Mike

There was a Carlton Cafe for many years at 94 Abergele Road.  It was a small grocers and bakers but the rear was a cafe of an old fashioned sort. Pickerings which was next door to "Steptoes" was number 60 so you can see the cafe was much further along Abergele Road. I think the  Carlton I am thinking of has gone and the site redeveloped.
