Abergele News
« on: February 11, 2023, 10:19:05 am »
A CRASH involving multiple vehicles took place on a road between Rhuddlan and Abergele yesterday (February 9).
This was on the A548, eastbound, at roughly 11.30am.

An eyewitness, who shared the above photo taken from dashcam footage, said: ?It looked like a three-car collision on the eastbound side; they had all gone into the back of each other.

?Approximately six vehicles stopped; three or four were involved in the collision.

?I passed at 11.35am and there was no police there, but it looked like it happened a few minutes earlier.

?The police were coming from Abergele about two minutes later - I passed them at McDonald?s. It was between Thorncliffe Skip Hire and the Kinmel Bay roundabout.?

Attempts have been made to contact North Wales Police for comment.

A CONTROLLED burn which spread out of control near Abergele yesterday (February 20) required firefighters to attend the scene.
This was near Mynydd Bodran, Llanfair Talhaiarn, with approximately 10,000 square metres of bracken and gorse affected.
A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: ?We were called at 4.47pm, and no further resources were required after 5.13pm.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service emphasised how important it is to ?call us before you burn? and encouraged landowners to take on board basic safety procedures before controlled burnings such as this incident.

Dave Hughes, head of fire safety and west area, says: "Every year we are called to countless false alarms and controlled burns which have spread.

"We are urging all landowners undertaking controlled burning to notify us by calling our control room on 01931 522 006.

?This will help avoid false alarms and crews being sent out unnecessarily as well as ensuring we are ready to respond in the event of a burn getting out of control.?

THERE is a mystery at one of North Wales' most famous buildings after a boundary wall was damaged over the weekend.
A councillor and member of a planning committee has denied claims he damaged a section of a Grade II listed boundary wall which forms the parkland that surrounds Gwrych Castle near Abergele.

A concerned resident claims he witnessed cllr Andrew Wood, who represents Gele and Llanddulas on Conwy County Borough Council, carrying out "demolition" on Saturday, February 18.

"We were shocked to witness on Saturday planning committee member and owner of the land, Conwy County Councillor Andrew Wood, carrying out the demolition.

A popular caf? that's been running for decades in the heart of a Conwy town has gone up for sale. Roots Caf? in Abergele is currently on the market for ?395,000.

The Market Street caf? has been running for over 50 years and will be sold as an ongoing business, according to the listing. The sale also includes a recently renovated three bedroom flat that occupies the building's first floor.

The listing states that the caf? can hold 52 covers with space for 24 more outside. The business remains open at the moment but is operating with reduced hours, menus, and staff.

A NEW 'banking hub' has been earmarked for Abergele.
esidents living in the town have lost seven banks over the years.

Whilst there are a number of ATMs nearby and a Post Office, there are currently no banks in the town; residents have to travel to Colwyn Bay or Rhyl to visit their branch.

LINK, the UK?s Cash Access and ATM network, has now chosen Abergele for a 'banking hub'. https://www.link.co.uk/

Chris Ashton, Head of Banking Services, LINK, said: "We know the way we pay for things and bank is changing. Yet not everyone is able to bank online or use digital payments. Many consumers and small businesses still rely on face-to-face banking and cash. That?s why we?re pleased to confirm Abergele has been selected for a banking hub.?

Update..

PART of a 200-year-old Grade II listed boundary wall that was "demolished" is now in the process of being repaired.

It was initally claimed the wall, which forms the parkland that surrounds Gwrych Castle near Abergele, had previously been damaged by a third party vehicle.

The boundary wall separates the road from land belonging to Abergele councillor Andrew Wood. The land was once part of the original Gwrych Castle estate but is now owned by cllr Wood, a member of Conwy County Borough Council's planning committee.

More than ?5,000 worth of damage done to Abergele Cricket Club

A FUNDRAISER has been launched for repairs at Abergele Cricket Club as it endures vandalism on a ?day to day basis?.

The club say they have had to deal with vandalism for years, and just recently had their moveable nets and sight screens damaged.

They described the latest damage as a ?significant setback?, with the cost of replacing covers more than the amount their insurance will cover.

North Wales Police's top cop has pledged to look into whether officers on off-road bikes could help crack down on a town's scrambler scourge. Chief Constable Amanda Blakeman was asked during a meeting of the North Wales Police and Crime Panel about the issue of youths riding bikes illegally and dangerously around Abergele.

Conwy county councillor Alan Hunter said they were driving off-road through woodland, and also using roads around the town. In March, the Local Democracy Reporting Service reported how the motorcyclists were riding around the ancient forest behind Gwrych Castle in the Tan y Gopa Woods and Coed Plas Uchaf woodland.

Abergele gets the nod over London, Dublin and Texas for global tech firm's new HQ
The town in Conwy got the nod ahead of some big rivals

A global tech start-up will establish its headquarters in North Wales ? choosing Abergele ahead of London, Dublin and Texas. Aevus is a technology offshoot of the successful and award-winning events agency, Worldspan Limited.

In recent years, Worldspan has been developing a suite of cloud-based applications designed to alleviate the challenges faced by associations and other membership-based organisations in managing and engaging their members.

Allotment plans which divided North Wales town recommended for approval
Cllr Andrew Wood wants to create 50 allotment plots at the site

An allotment "for the people of Abergele" could be given the green light today. Landowner Cllr Andrew Wood wants permission for 50 allotments together with storage units at a parcel of former parkland adjacent to Manorafon Farm Park and within the grounds of Gwrych Castle.

Although Cllr Wood is a member of Conwy?s planning committee, he will be disqualified from voting in the proceedings at the Bodlondeb meeting this afternoon. Planning officers have advised councillors to grant permission for the plans.

Cllr Wood wants to create 50 allotments of various sizes as well as a machinery storage shed for land maintenance equipment. Each allotment plot will contain a garden shed and be sited on flagstones.

POLICE believe two or three males are responsible for a series of burglaries in Abergele in the last few days.

Several house burglaries have been reported in the area, with the suspects appearing to be "opportunists", targeting homes that look empty.

Police also believe those responsible may have access to a small green hatchback.

Dinosaurs will come alive in North Wales this weekend when the region?s own Jurrasic Park opens its doors. Following on from a successful debut last summer, Manorafon Farm Park, Abergele, is re-running its Dinosaur Adventure attraction.

The park, in Conwy, is promising some ?exciting improvements? to what it bills as ?quite possibly the biggest dinosaur experience in the North West?. New dinosaurs will be scaring unsuspecting visitors and a ?panning for gems? area is being introduced.
