Cambrian Rally 2022
« on: September 21, 2022, 10:00:53 am »
ENTRIES for the 2022 Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally  https://cambrianrally.co.uk/ have got off to a flying start and excitement is building about the route which includes a stage new to the event and others used by Wales Rally GB.

This year?s rally will take place on Saturday, October 29.

Brenig, Alwen, Clocaenog, and Penmachno, are names well-known to competitors and rally enthusiasts already.

But added into the mix this year is a new closed roads stage at Nebo in the Conwy Valley, to be run for the National, and some other competitors, on the Friday evening.

With a new service park adjacent to the A55 and the A470 and a high profile start, and finish on Llandudno promenade, the organisers are confident they have come up with a winning formula for competitors and spectators alike.

Conwy route confirmed for Cambrian Rally

Clerk of the course, Alyn Edwards, said: "I am very excited about this year?s Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally, as it poses a huge challenge to all competitors of varying talents who are driving a variety of vehicles.

?As the final round of several championships, we wanted it to be a challenge and a worthy winner at the end.

"We have managed to secure a 7.75-mile tarmac stage with the support and help of Conwy Highways Department, which adds mileage to the National, and which is run twice on the Friday night."

Another exciting aspect is the use of the Brenig stage, with fantastic views from the dam to spot the cars.

Of the other stages, Alwen has a great surface with excellent spectator viewing, and Clocaenog is always popular with both competitors and spectators.

Unfortunately, there is no spectator viewing at Penmachno.

Many marshals are needed to help run the event, and details of how to register can be found at www.rallystageteam.co.uk.

WORLD Rally Championship competitor Oliver Solberg will compete on the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally at the end of this month, driving a Volkswagen Polo R5.

The son of former World Rally Champion, Petter Solberg, the 21-year-old will return to the Welsh forests for the first time since making his World Rally Championship debut competing on Wales Rally GB on the same roads in 2019.

The Monster Energy and HTB Racing driver said: ?I think everybody knows Wales is a very special place for my family and those roads are really, really nice ones to drive.?

Can rally be a green lean racing machine?

There's a distinct whiff of petrol in the air - and deafening roars as accelerators are floored - but can one of Wales' best-known rally races really be going green?

The Cambrian Rally said it was pushing to become a net carbon neutral event - for both cars and spectators.

It is taking to forest roads and tarmac across Conwy on Saturday as it also hosts the final stage of the British Rally Championship.

It means thousands of spectators are expected to descend on the county, before a victory parade in Llandudno in the evening.

"The rally runs through some of the most beautiful and environmentally sensitive countryside in the UK," said one of the rally organisers, course clerk Alyn Edwards.

"We are very conscious of our responsibility to reduce the event?s impact on this important environment."

Plenty of other videos if you go to youtube and search for Cambrian Rally 2022 ... certainly wet and muddy, and foggy as well.

My son Neil co-driving car 38, yellow Subaru Impreza - de-mister failed at start of first stage, so they had to drive through slowly due to misted up screen, driver Tom relying heavily on Neil reading the notes.  They were 88th overall after first stage, way off the pace.

Remedy was to cut a hole in the dashboard and pull the air intake pipe up, strap it so it was directly pointing at the screen, temporary job using a Stanley knife but made better at Service after 4 stages back at Llandudno Junction.

Tom, reigning ANWCC (Association of North-Western Car Clubs) Forest Rally Champion and from the Wirral, had to finish in top 5 contenders to win the championship again.  After a couple of stages, due to the issues, they were eighth, with the other drivers going well.  Better afternoon run to finish 46th overall on the event, had hoped to finish in topmtwenty on Neil's home event, but they had climbed to 4th championship contender by some quick times over last two stages, beating the two that were ahead.  Tom also won the award for the best driver performance by a member of North Wales Car Club.

Been a bit of a fraught year for the crew, having rolled the car twice on the previous two events, the car only just finished being repaired before the Cambrian!  That is rallying!
