Re: Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza... No more midday parade

THIS years Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza will not feature its usual daily midday parade.   ref pioneer

The three-day event, during the bank holiday weekend of April 29  May 1, wont see a return of the usual 12pm festivities due to money and manpower.

It typically saw an wide range of groups and vehicles walk through the town?s main streets, but this will not be taking place this year.

A statement from the organisers read: Unfortunately, the rumours about the parade being cancelled for this year are true.

Until yesterday, we had hoped this wouldnt be the case, but we can?t turn our decision around, and so the time is right to inform you, our visitors.

?This is not a decision we have made lightly but we have done it for the future of the event.

?For anyone asking why, the bottom line is money and manpower - two things many events that have now folded have struggled with since the pandemic.?

The extravaganza, which has been established for roughly 35 years and is free to attend, did not take place in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but enjoyed a successful return in 2022.

It often attracts more than 200,000 people to the town across the weekend.

This year, the extravaganza will also host its first fringe festival, with a number of comedy and magic acts performing.

The statement added: Our small committee will continue to work hard to ensure a great weekend and everything will be done to bring back the parade bigger and better next year.

In the meantime, we need your support this year, so please get behind the event and join us for a great weekend.

Keep an eye for exciting announcements about the steam arena and stage entertainment. Weve still got nine large traction engines attending this year.?

The extravaganza also includes street entertainers, stalls, full-size live steam traction engines, shop window displays and much more.

Llandudno Extravaganza organisers dismiss claims over attendance figures and threat to future
The event organisers say attendance numbers were consistent with previous years and they are already planning for 2024

local historian John Lawson-Reay has written to say he believes crowds were well down on previous years. He said pictures used in the Daily Post showed the streets were not as packed as they usually are for the weekend.

He claimed the loss of the old railway goods yard - now being developed for housing - had impacted the event as it had previously been used for storage. He added that people should "not be surprised" if next year's event gets cancelled.

However Chris Williams, chairman and director of Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza, said they were already excited to start planning for 2024 and that the station goods yard issue had no impact on the event.

Mr Lawson Reay's letter said: "The photograph you published of Mostyn Street illustrates the total lack of attendees. On any other year this part of Mostyn Street would have shown the visitors almost shoulder to shoulder.

EXCITEMENT is building ahead of this year's Llandudno Transport Festival, with organisers announcing the entry list is already full.

Entering its 32nd year, the festival showcases an array of lorries, tractors, motorbikes and more, and is run concurrently with the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza.

This year's event will take place at Bodafon Fields on the May Bank Holiday weekend, from May 4-6.

The organisers said entries for this year had now hit capacity, and that those who applied would be put on a "long" waiting list.
