All the stats are here so individuals can make a judgement on how the Welsh Government has coped so far, it shows the number of deaths, age groups concerned you name it. We have to assume it's fairly accurate although when it comes to deaths how many would have died fairly soon anyway, their underlying health condition being the main factor.

The detailed stats

I would like to know what's happened to track and trace, how many have signed up for it and how many told to isolate actually became infected.
Strikes me that testing and tracking could have been much more effective and could have saved a fortune in the meantime.

Anyway, we can all make our own risk assessments and decide what is in our best safe interest but always remembering to consider others too and not putting them in harms way because of our own selfishness.

A HUGE operation to vaccinate care home staff will start from today (Tuesday).

The Enfys Hospitals in Llandudno, Bangor and Deeside will be used to vaccinate nearly 2,000 care home staff.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board will use three mass vaccination centres this week so care home staff from across North Wales can get the vaccine.

At the same time, a small number of frontline staff who work in high risk areas at Ysbyty Gwynedd will also be vaccinated.

Teresa Owen, Executive Director of Public Health, said: “We want to be able to vaccinate at risk people as quickly as possible, so being able to use these mass vaccination centres is a key part of our rollout process.

“We know this can be an anxious time and we are working very hard to ensure that all those eligible receive their vaccine in turn as supplies are provided to us. We will continue to target those people who have been prioritised by the national Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation.

“It is important that people remember they do not need to contact the Health Board or their GP to get the vaccine. People will be contacted directly when it is their turn and will receive all the information they need to book their appointment.

Some care home staff have already received vaccinations. Clive Nadin, owner and manager of the Abbey Dale Care Home, Colwyn Bay said: “The majority of our staff have been vaccinated and we are very pleased about this as it creates an opportunity for us to get back to some form of normality. But there is a long way to go before he majority of the population is vaccinated, and we can’t let down our guard

“I implore everyone to get vaccinated when the time comes.”

The Assistant Manager of Treflys Care Home, Llandudno, said: “We are very glad vaccinations are happening and we have booked in as many staff as we can and hope it will move things forward.

“Our staff are very pleased as it is the only way we can move things forward and try to get back to normality.”   ref Pioneer

Matt Hancock to make live announcement on coronavirus later today

https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/matt-hancock-make-live-announcement-19512462

One of the announcements...

Hancock now says there are two cases of another new variant in the UK.

Both are contacts of cases who have travelled from South Africa.

"We are incredibly grateful to the South African government for their science," he says.

"This virus is yet more transmissible and appears to have mutated further than the new virus."

He says the UK is quarantining new cases, and placing restrictions on travel from South Africa.

Anyone who has been in South Africa in the past fortnight and anyone who is a close contact of someone who has been in South Africa in the last fortnight must quarantine immediately,    ref BBC

New Covid vaccine puts North Wales on frontline of battle to provide 'salvation for humanity'
A factory in Wrexham will next week begin filling millions of vials with the 'game-changing' Oxford vaccine

Now that the UK medicines regulator has authorised the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, a production line at a factory in Wrexham will grind into action.
In the coming months up to 100m vaccine doses will be produced for use in the UK at CP Pharmaceuticals on the town’s industrial estate.

40,000 doses of new Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine heading to Wales says top medical adviser
It is being manufactured in Wrexham and was approved for use this week

"We are having 40,000 doses delivered to us next week and on top of that we also had some excellent news that the interval between the two doses can be up to 12 weeks.

"That's for the Pfizer vaccine as well. The MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) have actually looked at the dose interval and for both vaccines they're saying it can be given up to 12 weeks [apart] which of course means that we can give a lot more people their first doses.""

Welsh Government's coronavirus update       full details    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-wales-55529700

One piece affecting NW.........

New variant 'could be more widespread' than data shows
The Welsh Government's health minister says the new variant of Covid could be more widespread in south Wales than the data suggests.

In the daily coronavirus press briefing, Vaughan Gething said there had been a fall in the incidence rate "in most parts of Wales, except in north Wales, where we are seeing cases rise quickly. We believe this is because of the new fast-moving strain."

Asked why north Wales might be particularly susceptible to the new variant, Mr Gethin said there was more evidence of the variant in north Wales as some labs in south Wales did not test for the new variant.

"We know more about north Wales because of where some of those lighthouse lab samples get sent," he said.
"More north Wales samples go to lighthouse labs that test for the change in structure. That allows us to understand if it's the new variant.

"We aren't completely sure of the picture in south Wales, so that's why Public Health Wales are working with colleagues in England... to understand how far the new variant has spread.

"We think the south Wales picture is an understatement. It's a more accurate picture of what we think is happening within the north."

Seven in ten coronavirus cases across the region are now of the more infectious strain, according to Wales chief medical officer.

Dr Frank Atherton said 70% of all cases in North Wales were now the mutant variant, as concerns over rises in coronavirus numbers continue.

The new strain is thought to be about 70% more infectious and slides shown at a Welsh Government press conference today showed how it had spread east to west across Wales, from December.

He said: "There is no evidence that it is a more serious strain, people don't get a more serious type of illness, but the fact that it spreads more rapidly means that there are more people getting infected.

"And if you get more people infected, you get more people in hospital and more people requiring intensive care."
