Two police cars got stuck in heavy snow while trying to rescue a 'stupid' motorist who skidded off the road after allegedly breaking lockdown rules by travelling to North Wales.
Police said the driver made the 20-mile journey from Ellesmere Port to Moel Famau Country Park, which straddles Flintshire and Denbighshire and has seen heavy snowfall and temperatures as low as -1.
Officers said the traveler ignored the closure of the road and lost control of the car after skidding on ice, which caused the vehicle to veer off the road.
The incident caused "major issues" for North Wales Police officers who braved the freezing conditions to rescue the driver, which resulted in two of their cars getting stuck in the heavy snow.
The frustrated officers were left with no choice but to call out a local volunteer rescue group to assist them.
"Freezing conditions, putting my officers at risk in many ways and not just the cold .
"This is what we don't want. Breaking rules causes risks.
"One person's stupidity by ignoring rules and closed roads has now led to officers stuck in treacherous conditions.
"Sadly we now have to call out a local volunteer rescue group with 4 x 4 to assist.
Pressure on North Wales cops - and even endangering their families
"This is so frustrating and unnecessary and risking everyone."
Later, officers posted on Twitter: "One male in his 30s, who is lucky to be uninjured, has now been dropped at a taxi rank in Mold and will receive a hefty fine for his irresponsible actions.
"His car is badly damaged in the crash and remains unrecoverable. All officers safe. Thank you to NEWSAR for rescuing us."
Earlier this week, North Wales Live reported that officers patrolling the area found “many people blatantly acting irresponsibly” after breaking lockdown rules to visit the area. ref DP
