Yes, it does appear to be real. The suit is inflated somehow and with the wings they can glide & steer much like a flying squirrel (which the suit is obviously based on). As they fly so close to the terrain I assume they can also get a bit of lift from thermals which can be heard being referred to in one of the videos. For each metre they drop in height they can travel about 2.5 metres forward so with modern GPS equipment they can plot their course through the terrain quite accurately. This also helps them choose a suitable place to deploy the parachute for a safe landing.
What made the jump in the programme more dangerous than normal was that instead of following the contours of the land they were doing a fly-over of a group of BASE jumping friends who were stood at the end of a piece of flat land so they needed to be high enough to clear the edge, like gliding over the top step of a flight of stairs, and they only just cleared it.
