Re: Rescue Services...RNLI Safety warning ahead of large spring tides
« Reply #480 on: March 30, 2024, 10:06:47 am »
People visiting the coast this Easter weekend are being urged to be cautious due to an increased risk of becoming cut off by large spring tides.

The warning comes as new figures show a rise of about 15% in tidal cut off rescues.

The RNLI is warning people of the dangers of the tides that coincide with the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Tide times and heights vary throughout the month and can easily leave people stranded and needing help.

"When it comes to tides even a short miscalculation can make a big difference, especially when there are bigger than usual tides," said Jason Dunlop, Penarth RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager.

Dog plunges down deep ravine at popular Snowdonia waterfall
Luckily for the hapless mutt, help was on hand from a mountain rescue team

More call-outs are expected over the Easter break. You can donate directly to the team?s volunteers, who are prepared to go out in all weathers seven days a week, year-round OVWRO?s fundraising page is here.
It might be a good idea if the people who are rescued are advised about the fund raising and given a leaflet to let them know how to make a donation to the OVWRO

Astonishment at what 'muppets' wear when flocking to Snowdon in all weathers
Trainers, sandals, flip flops, shorts - and not just in summer

Accidents waiting to happen?  I do like this idea though   "In exasperation, some climbers in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) have taken it upon themselves to turn people back. It?s been attempted on Yr Wyddfa too. One man said: ?I went last year in full winter conditions. I had to make people go down who hadn?t the appropriate footwear and clothing. Unbelievable. I avoid Snowdon now like the plague. Full of idiots.?

When we lived up by the lake, we could see the kagool and trainer brigade heading up to Llyn Crafnant, not a mountain, but above the snow line, they found out the hard way, that they should have checked the weather forecast before setting off, and as above should have been better prepared, the worst case we experienced...... two children separated from a larger group, fortunately they found our house and we were in, it took awhile to warm them up, very lucky indeed.

A 10-metre yacht on its way to Conwy found itself stranded.

This happened on Friday, April 5. Llandudno Lifeboat were called out to help.

A statement from RNLI Llandudno Lifeboat said: "Llandudno volunteers crewing the all-weather relief Shannon class lifeboat John Metters launched at 6.15pm on Friday evening to locate and assist a stranded 10-metre yacht on route to Conwy.

"The yacht was taken to the safety of Conwy Marina and our crew was then able to return to Llandudno Lifeboat Station at 9.20pm."

Dog struggling in Great Orme cove's waters saved by RNLI
The dog got into difficulties near Pigeon's Cove

A happy ending thank goodness and another great rescue by the RNLI.        I just hope that the owner had to walk back to town after that preventable incident.   Why was the dog off the lead in the first place as there are Seals on the beach and livestock on the grassy slopes?

A RESCUE operation involving a man stranded on his yacht with his brother and grandchildren in Rhyl was shown as part of a BBC programme last night (April 23).

Members of Rhyl?s Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) crew featured on yesterday?s episode of Saving Lives at Sea.

The Rhyl segment focused on an incident during a rainy evening last year, when skipper Brian came into difficulty on the ?infamously rough? Irish Sea.

An emergency Coastguard call had been made reporting that his yacht had lost engine power while caught in the storm offshore.

Conwy gorge rescue of 'youngest casualty' after school pupil injured
Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team came to the aid of the youngster

A school pupil was rescued from a gorge in North Wales after getting injured. The teenager was with a school group at Afon Ddu near Dolgarrog in Conwy.

The 14-year-old injured his leg on the guided activity. This saw the Ogwen team called into action.

They set up a rope rescue system and lowered team members into the gorge to initially give first aid. They then placed the casualty on a stretcher which was raised to the top before being carried through the wood for a roadside handover.

Woman got stuck on rock armour at North Wales beach after chasing dog
She had to shout for help from the rocks

A woman got stuck on rock armour off a Conwy village after chasing her dog. The animal ran away on the beach at Rhos-on-Sea yesterday.

It went into the rocky sea defences off the coast. The woman went after the dog and sustained cuts as she tried to retrieve it.

It does bring home the importance of choosing a route suitable for all members of a group.

Even more important, perhaps, is never take anyone without considerable experience up Tryfan. It's a difficult place, at the best of times.

'People think it's easy' - your view as 'panic attacks' trigger Eryri warning
Recent incidents on Eryri mountains have sparked concerns among rescue organisations and hikers alike

Recent incidents in the Eryri mountains have raised alarm among rescue teams and walkers. A panic attack near Tryfan's peak led to a stark warning from the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation about the mountain's risks and North Wales Live readers have been venting in our comments section.

The team stressed the importance of being prepared for Tryfan's exposure and navigational challenges, particularly for those with less experience. A walker who got stuck on an Eryri (Snowdonia) mountain was the latest in a line of hikers suffering a "panic attack".

Two major hazards off North Wales coast spotlighted as air ambulance lands on beach
Rescue teams have sounds warnings as beaches become more crowded

Two major hazards off the North Wales coastline have been highlighted after a series of close calls in recent days. Rescue teams have been busy dealing with sandbank evacuations while an alert was sounded over the threat posed by rip currents.

Ten people were plucked to safety after being stranded by the incoming tide on two separate sandbanks off Rhyl beach, Denbighshire. On the same day (August 1), two groups of people were escorted from sandbanks off West Shore beach, Llandudno, just before they were covered.

Meanwhile, Aberdyfi Lifeboat sounded a warning about the potential for rip currents. These were seen off the town’s Cemetery beach late last month and the local RNLI team warned they were not uncommon on the Gwynedd coast.
