This photo shows a referendum taking place in Conwy in the 1960s. What was it all about?

Just an "English" guess but was it to decide if the County (or Town) should go "wet" and serve alcohol on Sundays?


There only seems to be two piles of votes - For and Against.

You're quite right in that there are only two piles of votes, but it wasn't anything to do with alcohol. It was about getting rid of something in the town...or not getting rid of it....the people of Conwy had to decide.

I think it was a vote to demolish or not demolish Telford's Suspension Bridge.

I considered that option but thought that no one in their right mind would want to destroy a piece of history!    :rage:

However was it not about that time (mid 60's) that Cymdeithias Yr Iaith Gymraeg was started and the move to make more use of the Welsh language.   Road singage was included so maybe it was that.     I'm clutching at straws now!   L0L

Hugo is, in fact, absolutely right. 

The Suspension Bridge had been replaced as the main bridge into Conwy by the new road bridge a few years earlier and left to rot. It had got to the stage that a lot of work was needed to restore it and there was a great deal of debate about whether to bother or not. Eventually, the Town Council called a Referendum of ratepayers to decide the issue. Unfortunately, the ratepayers voted overwhelmingly to demolish it! Fortunately, the National Trust stepped in to save it and, so, it is happily still with us today.

I think that there was a pedestrian walkway on the suspension bridge that was not part of Telford's original bridge and it was causing problems with the bridge.
This I think was removed when the bridge was taken over by Cadw.
I agree with Yorkie that it seems ridiculous that this important piece of history could even be considered to be removed.    I bet they didn't let the townsfolk of Conwy have a vote when they decided to put that carbuncle on the top of the Town Hall,
