it doesn't take all that much confidence to put a short post in.

I think you'd be surprised. Many people are naturally reticent, and even more so in an unfamiliar medium.  It just takes time, and a willingness to make folk feel welcome, especially during their first postings.

Not sure BrumBob felt very welcome...(or others taking their first look in)... when he was invited to b****r off elsewhere?   ?{}?

I thought the language used was stronger than b****r off?

I do recall that recently we were advised that the privilidge of deleting posts rested solely with the Administrators and mere mortals such as we could not make a deletion under any circumstances.    >>>

That is correct. You do, however, have 20 minutes after a post is made to edit it as you wish.  :)

Yes, Ian explained it all to me but I think the post that was being refered to was long after 20 minutes had elapsed.  Nowt to do with me so not really worried.  I'm off out in the sunshine now.      $sunny$ $sunny$

I'm just wondering why a few of the new members are also members on other forums, in fact shed loads of other forums and they seem to have joined them all on the same day and yet never posted on any?  Are these the names responsible for collecting every ones E mails ( I know they can't on here anymore).  How many genuine members have we got on here I wonder  ?{}?

The vast majority of members on here are genuine, probably 90%+. I delete the obvious spammer profiles whenever I see them (the username and/or email address tends to give them away) and lots of them get blocked by the forum software when they try to join in the first place (usernames, email addresses and IP addresses are automatically checked against a spammer database on registration).

They don't join to collect email addresses, but to plug websites. There was a guy the other day who mentioned 'moviefunzone' in every message, for example. The usual way they do it is to put a website link into their profile - the idea being that Google will see the link in the profile over hundreds of different forums and boost the website's ranking in the Google search listings.

Trying to keep ahead of the spammers is a constant cat and mouse game.  :rage:

Ah like the "cheap deals to Vegas" one.  I understand now.  Quite clever really isn't it, there's two joined this week, I didn't realize it was a problem 'till I Googled a couple of names and reams of forum sites came up with the same name.  We forget on this side all the work you and Ian do to maintain this forum.  Your on my Xmas card list boys  ;D

I'm probably guilty of some of those.  I put out a general Google search and sometimes I do get ThreeTownForum coming up.   I'll have to try a few more odd ones!    L0L
