Mysteries of computers
« Reply #166 on: May 01, 2012, 10:07:09 pm »
As a change from hacking---Ive just had a inexplicable (to me at any rate) happening.  I connected up my usual laptop to my usual printer. Had both of them for around three years, but I hadnt used the printer for around six months.
Everything fine, go to the printer settings, the panel comes up and --- all there as usual but all the words are in German.
Tried it two or three times, no change. All german.  It was English when I last used it.
My mind boggles.   Mike  P.S. Its an Epson, Japanese I think.

There must be a language setting.  Is there a menu on the printer?   Got an instruction book?  Or is there one online?

If not quick course on German may be the answer!    :D

Thanks Yorkie for your reply which I have only just read. I've haven't tried to sort this out---to be honest it's not much bother, I can guess. But what puzzles me is how and/or why it has changed. I never clicked anything. Mike

I imagine even once common computers like the Spectrum and C64 etc must be getting fairly rare now as most of them have been binned long ago?

From time to time I receive attachments with emails which I cannot open. A window comes up saying -

"This file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Association's control panel".

Can someone interpret this for me please and guide me as to what I should do.

Up till now I have forwarded the message with its attachment to my gmail address and opened the attachment without difficulty. However I would like to avoid having to do this if possible.

Hi, Bellringer.
This normally means that you have not got the program which created the attachment installed on your pc & you need to either install that program or a program compatible with the attachment file type, or let the pc know of a compatible program for that file type.
If you post the file extension (the letters after the " . "   - normally 3 eg: image.jpg -  jpg is the extension). I will let you know of a compatible program.

Right click on the file, and then choose Open With, then, select Windows Mail , then you should be able to see the file opened in Windows Mail.
Let me know if this works.
The attachment was created in Outlook express - which is now outdated.
