77 years ago yesterday, Rhos on Sea pier was sold at auction for ?2,250 to Mr W R Denson, a Chester businessman.
Many won?t remember Rhos-on-sea pier as it was pulled down in 1954 and so may be surprised to learn that it was older and far longer than neighbouring Colwyn Bay pier (which too has now been demolished).
Opened to the public in 1895, Rhos pier was financed by a consortium of local businessmen keen to have a slice of the burgeoning holiday trade and hoped that steamers would land thousands of tourists into the area each year. The business soon went bust, partly because when they built the pier, they didn?t construct a landing stage!
Local magistrate, William Horton, took over and a landing stage was built. In 1897 paddle steamers belonging to Horton?s Colwyn Bay & Liverpool Steamship Company started to arrive however further trouble arose in 1908 when one of his vessels, Rhosneigr, was wrecked near the pier. At low tide some of the wreckage can still be seen.
In May 1915 William Jones the pier master spotted Private Gwilym John Thomas of the Welsh Regiment on the landing stage and warned the soldier not to try swimming to the shore. Private Thomas replied: ?I?m an old sailor and I?m not born to be drowned?. He then proceeded to dive into the water, got into difficulty and drowned. He is buried at Bron-y-Nant cemetery.
During the Second World War, Rhos-on-sea pier was sectioned with planks removed to deny easy access to the invading enemy! These were replaced once the threat had passed but with Horton?s death in 1944, Rhos-on-sea pier?s glory days were firmly in the past. The council bought it off Mr Denson in 1952 and, despite much protest from local people, it was pulled down in 1954.

It's nice to look at old photos and they bring back happy memories of a bygone age.     that young boy hasn't changed in all the years that have elapsed since the photo was taken.
Rhos holds many memories for a lot of people and I can clearly remember riding on a toastrack tram going past Rhos on Sea Golf Course when my father pointed out to me a boat that was being laden with Limestone from the Little Orme, nice memories.
It is only in very recent years that I found out that where the Pier once was, was in Caernarfonshire as I assumed it was in Denbighshire

Following on from above...........

RHOS-on-Sea Rotary members have been refurbishing the chairs at St Trillo Chapel.                       pioneer

Wyn Jones and Cliff Large, from the Rotary, carried out the work at the tiny plain stone roofed building, also in Rhos-on-Sea.

Geoff Price, from the club, said: "The club regularly carry out garden maintenance at the chapel as part of our community service commitment."

Gavin Davies, rotary president, said: "We are always delighted to play our part in preserving such an important part of our local history."

The chapel is dedicated to St Trillo, an early saint from the 6th century with connections to the area.

The altar stands over a natural spring, thought to have been an ancient holy well, from which water has been used for baptisms in the parish.

Everything seems to be taken for granted, no more respect :(

A RESIDENT was left with no choice but to clean Rhos-on-Sea paddling pool after litter was discarded in and around the pool.

Karrie Williams, from Colwyn Bay, arrived at the pool with her mother and daughter yesterday (June 6) to discover "a lot" of items including plastic gloves, sweet wrappers and tin cans at the site.

She and her mum took it upon themselves to clean up the mess as her daughter played.

Ms Williams warned residents that the pool needed to be kept tidy "or we may lose it".

"There was a lot of plastic gloves in the pool, sweet wrapper, tin cans, cans of pop and A4 paper in and around the pool area."

A green towel had also been left in the pool, which they left to dry.

Rhos-on-Sea paddling pool reopened on May 17, following a two-year wait for its return.

The local authority came under heavy criticism last year after it revealed that its paddling pools along the Conwy coast would not re-open for summer 2023 due to a high risk of people slipping.                       pioneer

THE Post Office branch in Rhos-on-Sea may move to a new location after the couple currently running it confirmed their plans to retire.

Currently based on Penrhyn Avenue, the post office has been run by couple Sue and Dean for the last 15 years.

They said they are retiring “with mixed feelings”, while the Post Office said consultation on a new location for the branch will start soon.

Re: Everything to do with Rhos On Sea.........Marmalade Kitchen Cafe
« Reply #879 on: August 15, 2024, 09:41:42 am »
A FAMILY-RUN café in Rhos-on-Sea that was put up for sale more than a year ago has seen its price reduced by nearly £100,000.

Marmalade Kitchen, at 14 Rhos Road, was put up for sale for £224,995 in May 2023.

But given the tumultuous financial climate and difficulty of selling, the business has seen its price reduced to just £130,000.

Marmalade currently offers a diverse range of food and drink options and also caters for delivery with a separate ‘meals on wheels’ menu.

Trending North Wales resorts paying 'horrendous' price for popularity
Council gives progress update on new £20m promenade and beach

Parking congestion on two revamped promenades was thrown into the spotlight after sunshine and blue skies sent people scurrying to the coast. Spaces were at a premium on the trending seafronts of Rhos on Sea and Colwyn Bay last weekend.

Residents complained of traffic and parking spilling into residential streets, blocking pavements and causing congestion. Anger and frustration were most acute in Rhos on Sea where residents had predicted chaos ahead of a new “one-way” traffic system starting in February.

I always thought that the houses on the Cayley embankment were a nice place to live, but no longer feel that way because of the traffic.   Someone I know moved there because it was a quiet road with nice views but times have changed

Firefighters battled a blaze in Rhos-on-Sea for hours last night at a building where a Rowlands Pharmacy branch is located.

Four fire engines and multiple police cars were at the scene on Rhos Road, which was blocked while emergency services dealt with the incident.

People took to social media last night, commenting on the incident and reporting it involved a building where a Rowlands branch was based. A photo showed firefighters outside the front of the building with hose reels.

Update on the final stages at Rhos-on-Sea beach

But there are a number of jobs to be completed before the promenade is finished. Hannah Fleet, Councillor for Rhos-on-Sea, gave an update on what's left to do and when work will start.

This includes plans for new shelters, kiosks and when lighting issues will be resolved.
