New Wales tourism tax to be introduced within this Welsh Government term
Most people support the idea of a visitor levy according to the Welsh Government but the tourism sector and Tories remain opposed

Plans for a new tourism tax in Wales are moving forward, the Welsh Government has confirmed. Legislation enabling local authorities to introduce a visitor levy in their areas will be put to the Senedd within this government term, which ends in 2026.

The controversial levy will be a small charge paid by people staying in commercially-let overnight visitor accommodation, the Welsh Government has said. Similar charges are commonplace around the world, used in more than 40 destinations including Greece, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Catalonia - although tourism groups say they all have far lower VAT rates for their tourism sectors.

In the Liverpool Echo this morning ................

Waterfall walk only a short drive from Liverpool looks straight out of a fairytale
At 42 metres, it is one of the highest continuous waterfalls in the UK

A romantic walk that leads on to a spectacular waterfall is less than two hours away from Liverpool.

Swallow Falls in Betws-y-Coed, Conwy is one of North Wales's best-known natural attractions, having been featured in paintings, postcards and films.

The waterfall attracts visitors from all over the world and at 42 metres is the highest continuous waterfall in Wales. It is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty where the river Llugwy flows through a narrow chasm creating a cascade.

The places in North Wales named among the most beautiful in Britain
The second best on the list is in North Wales

The top 50 most beautiful places in the UK for 2023 have been revealed by worldwide travel guide Big 7 Travel. Among the top 10 are three locations in Wales - with number two on the list right here in North Wales.

Wales is known and much loved for its marauding mountains, sweeping shorelines, and enchanting villages that make up one of the most beautiful landscapes on the globe. And the three spots which have filled up this list are exceptional examples of this.

Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park here in North Wales, Three Cliffs Bay in Gower and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park all made the cut. One amazing destination in Conwy just missed out on the top 10.

North Wales attractions voted 'go-to locations' during spring and summer in top 10 UK list
They're perfect for anyone wanting to enjoy nature

As the weather is becoming more spring-like and flowers and fruits are coming into bloom, many of us will be looking for new places to enjoy a sunny walk - or even to discover a beautiful gem on their doorstep. There are few places that surpass certain areas in North Wales in terms of natural beauty, but a selection - perhaps controversially - have been voted above others, including home favourite near Wrexham, and a stunning garden in Conwy.

There are estimated to be more than 27,000 parks and green spaces across the UK, making Britain a go-to location during the spring and summer months. With a +100% rise in searches for ?flowers seen in spring, it?s clear that many are looking to enjoy nature and make the most of the season.

Which is North Wales' best seaside resort?
Take our quick poll to choose your favourite

Llandudno is leading at the moment with 31%

North Wales is spoiled by having such incredible coastline and beaches for people to enjoy. Around our coast, we've naturally got a variety of seaside resorts and towns where people live and come on holiday.

Naturally those towns and villages have a great deal of variety. However one thing stays the same - holiday-makers and locals keep coming back year after year.

Llandudno, Conwy and Colwyn Bay voted best and worst seaside towns
LLANDUDNO and Conwy have been voted some of the UK?s best seaside towns, but Colwyn Bay has placed way down the list.

In a study by consumer group Which?, more than 3,000 visitors rated the beach, attractions, scenery, value for money and more, for more than 100 UK seaside towns and villages.

Llandudno and Conwy placed close to the top of the list, with Conwy just outside the top 10 with a customer score of 80 per cent and Llandudno just below on 79 per cent.

Tourism tax may harm businesses, says Bluestone boss

The chief executive of a major Welsh visitor attraction has claimed that the proposed tourism tax has the potential to harm holiday businesses.

William McNamara, of Bluestone National Park Resort, spoke after the announcement of a ?30m package of investment for the Pembrokeshire site.

He said he did not want to see visitors "turned off" coming to Wales.

The Welsh government said it could generate new income to improve local services and infrastructure.

Bluestone is developing 80 new platinum lodges, a heritage restaurant and an 11 hectare solar farm.

I visited best holiday destination Betws y Coed and had a spiritual moment by the water
Why Betws-y-Coed has so much to offer the visitor

Betws-y-Coed is the best holiday destination in the UK, according to a new survey. The haven in Conwy beat the likes of Ambleside, Whitby and St Ives said a PR company for survey organisers GO Outdoors.

It comes as another survey trumpeted its walking trails. So it seemed like a good time to go and see it once again for myself.

I agree that Betws y Coed is a lovely place and have enjoyed many walks from there. In my opinion the best of these is the walk up to Llyn Elsi.

Llandudno has been found to be among the most affordable seaside resorts in the UK for a holiday, according to a recent survey.

CheapRooms.co.uk compiled a list of the most expensive seaside resorts in the UK based on the average price for the cheapest available double room in a hotel or guest house during the month of August (only properties within walking distance of a beach and rated at least 3 stars were considered).

Out of the 30 seaside resorts in the survey Llandudno was 23rd on the list, making it one of the cheaper options when it came to looking for a holiday by the sea.

According to Jim Jones, the chief executive of North Wales Tourism, the global publicity generated by the Wrexham AFC co-owners has put the whole region on the map like never before.

He said: ?It?s impossible to accurately calculate the precise value of the profile created by their special brand of magic, but the Rob and Ryan factor would undoubtedly be worth more than ?1 billion if you had to pay for the equivalent coverage in advertising.?

Mr Jones was speaking about the dynamic duo ahead of the annual Go North Wales Tourism Awards at Venue Cymru in Llandudno on Thursday, November 23.

The Oscars-style ceremony to celebrate the heroes of the tourism and hospitality industry, supported by headline sponsor Harlech Foodservice, will be hosted by respected ITV Wales journalist Carole Green.

The window for submissions in 19 categories is open until Monday, October 9.

Mr Jones said: ?I have been involved in the industry for quite some time and I have never known a period as tough as it has been.

?The remarkable resilience shown by the people working in the sector over the past four years has been nothing short of heroic.

?Businesses are working extremely hard to try to get back to where we were in 2019 when we were on a high, with an all-time high number of visitors generating a record number of jobs and an annual boost of ?3.6 billion for the regional economy in North Wales.
