Such stupidity...amazing!  &shake&

ELEVEN children and three adults had to be airlifted off a mountain in a two hour rescue mission after they got lost in the dark.

The two families were branded “foolish” after they underestimated a walk up Cadair Idris in Snowdonia, and got into difficulties making their way down from the summit.

The resulting rescue mission to get the group safely down cost well over £4,000 and went on until midnight.

The party, from Manchester, including the youngest child, aged eight, and the eldest 15, had set off at around 11am on Wednesday.

Around 10 hours later they got stuck on a slope while making their descent down the south side as night started drawing in.

They had meant to go down the north side. Realising they were lost they called police, who alerted the Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team just after 9.15pm.

It was decided the best way to get them down was by RAF Valley’s Sea King helicopter, which costs around £2,000 an hour to run. Seven of them had to be winched off the ridge and the others diverted to flat ground where the helicopter could land.

David Williams, team leader of Aberdyfi Search and Rescue Team, said being unprepared when venturing into potentially dangerous places is “foolish”. He said the group were ill-equipped and had “bitten off more than they could chew”.

He added: “They completely miscalculated the difficulty of the walk and were inappropriately equipped for such a journey.

“They underestimated the height of the mountain – one of their party was struggling physically.

“I would urge people to always assess every journey before embarking. If needs be, seek advice from tourist information centres or the rangers at Snowdonia National Park – even check the internet, it’s that easy. In this case, these families had bitten off far more than they could chew.”

Graham O’Hanlon, also from ASART, said: “The group were flown in two trips down to the rugby field in Dolgellau, where our volunteers organised transport to collect the group’s minibus from Mynffordd on the other side of the mountain.”

Pilot and squadron leader Alex Brassington from RAF Valley said: “Fortunately, none of the 14 people were injured and were all safely dropped off just after midnight.”

I've put this post in the coffee centre because I cannot find the original thread even though it was only a couple of days ago.
It discussed the recent building development work on Bodafon fields, and the one time proposed golf driving range was mentioned.  Well, the proposed driving range was, I understand, nowhere near the present work, i.e. up to a quarter of a mile away ---- at least. The driving range was going to be in the far south east corner, to the left of the Bodafon farm buildings, and right away from any public roads.
Just in passing, thanks to Snowcap and Fester for both expressing some fears for me on the pitch and putt. I was never particularly worried b this----indeed I could see the two being to a degree complementary. One of my great worries on my course is the young eighteen year old who wants to stretch his muscles and belts one of my balls for all; hells strenght and with little regard for aim. I've had a few potential nasty accidents in my three years, enough for me to give them a lecture if they look like causing this problem before they even start. And next year I am going to be even sterner and to hell if they think I am being a spoilsport. Pitch and Putt is all about "gentle but accurate" hitting of the ball.  So NO DRIVING in any shape or form up here. The course is just too small to allow this.   And I would most certainly have Health and Safety on my side.

Just seen DaveR's wonderful photo of the pier kiosk at Beaumaris on his blog.
Not sure how to leave a comment there so just to say that to me it completely sums up the essence of a day at the seaside.

That's nice of you to say so, thank you! Perhaps I should stick a few more pics on the Walking thread.

Maybe it's me but I don't really see why the media is making a big fuss of nude pictures of Harry.  He's a young lad who works hard and plays hard it seems.......and so what.  Are we really interested.  Are we really that sad that we'll run out and buy the Sun news paper just so we can see the photos. Nothing would make me buy the Sun after the Hillsborough disaster not even if Jason statham was on page 3.
