Dating this poster
« on: August 27, 2012, 04:43:52 pm »
Hi,
Is anyone able to date this poster?   The clues, I guess, are the 4 digit phone number and the spelling of Conwy.
Thanks!

Subscriber Trunk Dialling (STD) giving Conwy a code instead of the name, came in in 1958.  So the poster will be before that time.    Commercially produced printing generally has a code on it giving the date (year) and number printed, see if your poster has anything.

It is very old and I am afraid I am unable to help you.

I suppose you could always telephone or e-mail the owner:

Mr Bryn Hughes
Quay, Conwy, LL32 8BB

Email: conwycruises@sky.com

Thanks for the quick responses.  I've e-mailed him, so we'll see what comes of it.

I've not got the actual poster - just the image.

I'm not convinced it's that old, though.  Other research shows that the boat (Princess Christine) was built in 1963, and I would have thought that the spelling of the river as "Conwy", rather than "Conway" placed it at least in the 70s.

Looking at old adverts on the site, Llandudno had 5 digit numbers in the 60s.  (But this is, of course, Conwy.)

Still confused!

Please let us know how you get on.

By coincidence, I was with Mr Bryn Hughes and on his latest vessel Queen Victoria only yesterday morning and we actually passed the old Princess Christine on our way out.

I think the "a" from Conwy was dropped around 1972.

I've just been in touch with a friend in Deganwy who feels fairly sure that the poster is dated 1974-76, this based on his good recollection that the spelling changed in 1974, and that Conwy adopted 5 digit numbers in 1976.   Sounds about right to me, but I'll still be interested in what the official reply is from the boat people.

I used to work on both of those boats - the Christine was always my favorite - even in the off weather   8)

I've had a reply from the boat Company, but I'm afraid to say I'm sceptical as to its accuracy  ?{}?  (see my last comment above) :

"It dates from about the mid 60s as the Princess Christine was built in 1964 I also have one which my dad told me was from about 1965."

Didn't Conway become Conwy about 1970 or 1971 ???

At the time of change I lived in Conway Cottage, Tal-y-Cafn, the house being part of Lord Aberconway's Bodnant Estate.  The Lord refused totally to change both his name and the name of the property when Conway became Conwy.

She was designed to work the River Conwy. Princess Christine was built locally by Dickies of Bangor and launched in June 1963.  Licensed to carry 80 passengers.
