Colwyn Bay Bonfire Night display cancelled amid Storm Ciaran safety concerns
The annual display is one of the biggest in the region

One of the region's biggest firework displays has been cancelled amid concerns over Storm Ciaran. The Eirias Park Bonfire and Fireworks Display, which takes place in Colwyn Bay, was scheduled to take place on Friday, November 3.

But fears over the effect of torrential downpours from Storm Ciaran has led to the event being cancelled. A yellow weather warning for rain is in place for North Wales from 6pm on Wednesday.

In a joint statement issued on November 1, Cllr Hannah Fleet, town mayor, and Chair of the Bay of Colwyn Bonfire Sub-Committee Cllr Chris Hughes said: "This decision has been taken on safety grounds, due to the forecasted heavy rainfall over the next 24-36 hours and the impact this could have both on staff availability and on already waterlogged ground, causing safety concerns for those attending the event and potential damage to the parkland.

"It has not been possible to reschedule the event to a later date, as we do not know how long it will take for the ground to recover from the recent and expected storm events. We know this will be disappointing and can assure you that this decision has not been taken lightly."

I still don't comprehend why it's necessary to have two firework displays in neighbouring towns so close to each other. Granted, Llandudno's is tide dependant but access and viewing must be a lot easier than Colwyn Bay.
Wouldn't it be better to settle for just one display in November and keep one for New Year's Eve perhaps and have both in Llandudno?

I agree, it crossed my mind when reading the story, just how much is CCBC spending on these displays throughout the county,  considering how much debt they are in.

MORE than 20 shops in Colwyn Bay are set to stay open late every Thursday in December amid an appeal to support the town?s independent businesses.

The shops will be open every Thursday in December between 5pm - 8pm until Thursday, December 21.

They will also open on Thursday, November 23 from 5pm until 8pm.

Speaking on behalf of the businesses involved, Caroline Stanyer, joint owner of Stanley and Lottie on Penrhyn Road, said: "Colwyn Bay's small, local business community is growing and is the heart of the town.

"The late night Christmas shopping evenings are a great opportunity for the local community and visitors to shop, grab a bite to eat, have a festive drink and explore what the town has to offer.

"There will also be special offers and Christmas treats galore.

"We would love people to support us."

The town's artisan markets will run on Saturday, November 18 and Saturday, December 9 from 10am until 4pm.    ref pioneer

Seafronts and brick tunnels feature in some of the stunning images voted the nation's best. An annual photographic competition is run by the Institution of Civil Engineers in Wales (ICE Wales Cymru).

The competition challenges photographers across the country to find and best showcase civil engineering projects through the lens of a camera. With entries at an all-time high and over a thousand public votes received, judges decided to extend the competition by introducing two categories - professional and individual.

THERE is a huge blaze at the petrol station in Old Colwyn this morning.

One eye-witness saw a pump and van on fire and huge orange flames.

Another person reported someone 'on fire' at the ASDA Old Colwyn Express petrol service station.

This is believed to have happened about 8.20am.

A spokesperson for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to the incident at 8.28am this morning.

"Two crews were in attendance and police and Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust were also in attendance.

THE SITE of an old charity shop in Colwyn Bay has been renovated after going on the market.                  ref pionee

The 2 Conway Road site, next to popular pub The Station, was the site of Cancer Research UK for several years until the charity's recent departure.

The property has now been renovated, with a new front, as a new lease becomes available on a 3-5 year basis, or for a freehold purchase price of ?100,000.

It is made up of a ground floor totalling some 720 sq ft, including a storeroom, and office, kitchen and toilet areas on the first floor with accompanying office space.

The building is on the market with estate agent St David's Commercial, who said it had been "newly renovated".

The brand has expanded in recent years but today confirmed its Colwyn Bay shop would shut
I was there this week and the place was busy as it is every time I have been shopping there,  perhaps the rent is too high?

TOMORROW'S Christmas artisan market in Colwyn Bay has been cancelled after "highly dangerous" winds were forecast, the organisers have announced.

The event was due to be held on Station Road in the town centre tomorrow (December 9), but has now been cancelled at the last minute.

Event organisers, The Artisan Market Company, announced the decision on social media, with projected 40-50mph winds not allowing them to put on the popular market.

The news will no doubt be a blow to businesses and residents, with market stalls and festive entertainment having been planned.

Organisers had looked at moving the event indoors, to no avail.

The organisers said: "It is with a very heavy heart that we must announce, the Christmas Artisan Market in Colwyn Bay tomorrow (Dec 9th) has been cancelled.

"The winds forecast for the majority of the day are 40 - 50+ mph which is obviously highly dangerous and we are not permitted to hold a market in these conditions.

A NEW community hub which aims to host a range of different activities to divert youngsters away from anti-social behaviour is opening in Colwyn Bay.

Colwyn bay Community Hwb will open in early 2024 in Rhiw Road.

Tom Ward, who owns Wardy's Gaming on Abergele Road in Colwyn Bay, is opening the new venture alongside fellow directors Joe Blakesley and Ben Watts.

It is hoped that the 'hwb' can support young people and get them off the streets. The space has a clear message that once you walk through the door, 'you leave your problems outside'.

The building will also be available for community groups to hire out and residents will be able to rent the hall for events such as birthday parties.

Tom, of Meliden, said: "Since I put the announcement on social media, I have been inundated with calls and messages

"We have been after this building for some months. We want to get youngsters off the streets and give them something to do.

THE SUBWAY store in Colwyn Bay closed yesterday (December 14), with members of staff saying they were only told that same morning.

The Subway on Conway Road only informed staff of the closure when they came into work, with staff members telling residents that they were not given a reason for the closure.

The chain had been at the site for several years, sharing a site with a Spar shop at the former Woolworths site.

Having suddenly closed, the news has been met with fierce criticism from residents.

There is a mood of despondency in Colwyn Bay in the run-up to Christmas.      It may not be the right time for CCBC's plans for Colwyn Bay to go ahead,  perhaps those plans should be put on hold pro tem

It's raining and blowing a gale here up on the Heights.   It's also bin day today so I waited until the Binmen arrived in the street and then took my bin down.  Apparently other people had left their bins out overnight despite the gale warnings so consequently there was a lot of rubbish flying about.
The Binmen work very hard and efficiently in all types of weather and are extremely polite and helpful when I've spoken to them so credit where credit is due.

Ours are normally very good, we loop our full bins to our gates with cord on windy nights, however this morning they did not retie the empty bins, so had to chase them up the road..........
