Should Blodwen stay in Llandudno?
Skeleton Blodwen, aged 5,500, at home in Llandudno
The skeleton of a woman who lived 5,500 years ago has gone on display in her home town, more than a century after she was discovered. Blodwen is the nickname given to a Neolithic skeleton found on Little Orme in Llandudno in 1891. Until now, the remains have been housed at a museum in Bacup, Lancashire.
The exhibition forms part of a three-month tomb builders' display at Llandudno Museum. The skeleton was discovered in a fissure by an engineer excavating quarry works, who then donated her to the museum in his home town of Bacup.
Carbon dating tests carried out at Oxford University have revealed that Blodwen died around 3510 BC, aged somewhere between her late fifties and early sixties. The skeleton was found in a deep fissure on the Little Orme, Llandudno
Orthopaedic examinations show that she was about 5ft (1.52m), powerfully built, and her bone structure suggests she was accustomed to carrying heavy loads, both on her head and in her arms. There are signs, however, that this lifestyle took its toll on Blodwen, with clear evidence of severe arthritis in her neck and knees. At the time of her death she was also suffering from secondary cancer, although it is not obvious whether it was this which killed her.
Pig bones dating from the same period found close to Blodwen's skeleton would seem to suggest that she came from a farming background. Shirley Williams, Museum Education Officer for Llandudno Museum, organised the exhibition to form part of the Festival of British Archaeology, including getting the Bacup Natural History Society to agree to the loan of Blodwen. She, said: "She was found in a deep fissure on the Little Orme, and way down below her were the bones of ancient animals - hyena, rhinoceros, bear.
Ms Williams said it would be "great" if she could stay in Llandudno, but said Bacup was very interested in keeping Blodwen.
Blodwen is due to go back to Lancashire at the end of the month - but now there is a campaign to keep her in Llandudno which is supported by Llandudno Town Council.
Blodwen also has a presence on both Facebook and Twitter, as Blodwen Chardon, named after the Chardon Trust, which runs the museum.

Sunday 12th September Llandudno Town Band celebrate their centenary at Venue Cymru 3pm
http://www.venuecymru.co.uk/details.php?id=886 (http://www.venuecymru.co.uk/details.php?id=886)
I took the missus along to watch the celebration concert this afternoon and we weren't disappointed.
£10 each for tickets to watch an excellent show from 3pm - 5-30pm with the Llandudno Town Band, Cor Maelgwn, Euphonium solost David Childs and Craig-y-Don's own tenor Elgan Thomas.
On behalf of the band, George Brooks Snr MBE received the Freedom of Llandudno from the Mayor of Llandudno, Cllr Ann Yates supported by Cllr Linda Groom and Cllr Philip Evans JP.
The compere Dilwyn Price was just perfect as the compere.
Here's to the next 100 years.
-
Yes it was a great concert, and now the band all have the freedom of the town!
-
So what privileges come with this gesture?
In some places they are allowed to drive their sheep through the town!! However I don't think that happens very often in practice.
-
In some of these old traditions, they enjoy rather interesting rights - such as the choice of the eligible females in the town....
-
a parking spot in Mostyn street would be nice!
-
I`m sure Bellringer would point you in the right direction for parking in mostyn street Suepp. ;) ;)
-
Yes the Holy Trinity Church car park has been operating as a "pay & display" facility for just over a year now. Fees: £1 for up to 2hrs., £1.50 for 3hrs., £2 for up to 4hrs.
Feedback has been very positive and the facility much appreciated.
Access is at the rear of the Church (opp. Gamlins, solicitors). Parking on Sunday mornings is for those attending services with the "pay & display" operating from 11am.
Thanks Barbiroli for the opportunity to "plug" this - it costs a lot to keep the building in good order as you can imagine with something always needing to be done.
-
Glad to have been of service Stan.

A Christmas Carol was really well done at the Tabernacle tonight.... close to a full house, and I hope they made decent money.
It strikes me that they could have run it for several more nights, a lot of effort for just 2 nights.
The show might have been even MORE enjoyable if the beers I had with DaveR beforehand hadn't made me nod off. ZZZZzzz....Snore.

Already posted in another thread, this is an advance notice about a show Trinty Players are putting on.
The concert itself is a mix of carols, Christmas songs, including audience participation favourites such as Winter Wonderland, Rudolph, Jingle Bells and hits from the past, and comic readings from te likes of Dylan Thomas, Grenfell and Pay Ayres. It'll be a warm and cosy show, with plenty of opportunity to join in and then meet, afterwards, in the schoolroom over a glass of mulled wine and a hot mince pie. Should get you all in the Christmas Spirit, and - best of all - it's for a really good cause.
Tuesday 7th December starting at 7.30pm
at Trinity Church
in aid of
Help For Heroes
and tickets cost £2.00 and are available from Escape Sports, 100 Upper Mostyn Street, or on the door.

I was gong to post to thank anyone from here who did manage to make it. The concert was a sell-out, much to my surprise:-) We filled the body of the church, and raised over £500 for the Help for Heroes charity, as well as packing out the schoolroom afterwards with mulled wine and mince pie eaters. There were so many of them, I didn't manage to get either...!
An excellent evening, which exceeded all our expectations, so thank you to anyone who came or who publicised. it .

Llandudno Library will re-open Tuesday January 25th
Come along to see the newly refurbished library - enjoy all your favourite services along with some new ones...
Conwy’s busiest library has benefited from a grant funded refurbishment programme and is due to reopen next week.
Llandudno Library, which received over 160,000 visitors during 2009/10, will boast a range of new and improved facilities when it re-opens to the public on Tuesday 25 January.
Library users will see a whole new look to the library layout. There will be specially zoned areas, including a family-friendly area, which will accommodate the library’s popular story time sessions, an area for young people and a local history zone.
There's also a newly refurbished area where people can use the library’s IT facilities or drop-in to make use of Wi-Fi access. Along with new self service counters for taking out and returning books, allowing staff more time to help library users and deal with enquiries.
The building has also improved disabled access and new baby change facilities.
The improvements were funded by a capital grant of £300,000 from Welsh Assembly Government/CyMAL and £100,000 from Conwy County Borough Council Local Community Regeneration Provision, only available for this purpose.
Cllr Goronwy Edwards, Cabinet Member for Communities at Conwy County Borough Council said,
“We are delighted that the Library Service successfully secured this grant funding for Conwy for the third time, after successful refurbishments in Abergele and Colwyn Bay libraries, and we’re pleased to continue investment in libraries when funding permits. I’m sure that the Library’s customers will find the new facilities impressive and the numbers will continue to increase.”
-
We read in one of the local newspapers of an open evening from 5pm - 8pm tonight.
Me and the missus went just after 5pm and thought it all looked really nice.
Apparently, our tour guide informed us there are a few less computers available but this will be offset by free wi-fi for everyone who takes in their own notebook or netbook.
They have also much improved the children's area as well as the library desk.
The centrepiece is the opening up of the balcony into the former reference library.
I would recommend a visit if only to appreciate all the changes.
-
I think I will pop along on Wednesday and take a look. I still have a lot of digging in the Local History section to do.

Well, yes... one does see the Batala band several times during the year.
But (to me) The Extravaganza itself makes a change, because all the OTHER days of the year are the same.
When else can you buy an over-priced cheeseburger at the road side in Llandudno?
-
I've never managed to be in Llandudno for the Extravaganzer, but this year I will be here! I'm really hoping my favourite bus from the old Marine Drive tours will be there, it was a maroon and cream Guy Wolf around 1948 I think, I've not seen it since I was a teenager, it would be great to be reunited!
-
Sorry to sound like a big kid, but I always enjoy the Extravaganza, join in the parade, if I can and always, always have a wander down the fairground. The year the family came I actually went down the big helter skelter by the Empire with the Granddaughter. She is a teenager and I shan't see 60 again, but we were like a pair of kids !! ;D Knew about it afterwards though-- my backside ached for a week ! :(

Question - If a family came to Llandudno this week for a half term break, what do you think there is for them to go and see at Venue Cymru for the remainder of this week?
Answer – King Lear by William Shakespeare.
Do you often talk to yourself Bri? ???
Been down the Links tonight? ZXZ
-
Trojan, I was only trying to save someone looking up the answer. :-}}}
-
I used to drag my kids to see Shakespeare plays at various castles over the years, and they absolutely loved them, - they were informal outdoor productions (take a chair and a picnic ) I would imagine the price of the tickets would be quite high at Venue Cymru
-
£10 - £28.50 depending on day.
Concessions: £2 off top 2 prices for Senior Citizens.
suepp, it seems kids pay the same as adults which doesn't seem quite right. *&(
-
Trojan, I was only trying to save someone looking up the answer.
Perfect family fare for the half term - King Lear...
-
During half term - save some money and get the kids up the Great Orme in the fresh air !
We recently had family over who's children had their holidays last week and they had a great time on the Rocking Stone and searching for caves. It was freezing but good old fashioned fun. (We bought a map from the Rest and Be Thankful after seeing it somewhere on here :)
The children absolutely loved it and we saved a small fortune (considering it can cost us between £30 -£100 just to take the family to the pics or the theatre now!)
-
Absolutely right Curly Cap.
My first visits to the town involved Great Orme trekking, and when you are young you might not appreciate it, but its the best thing for them.
Now, when my family visit, the nephews and neices can't wait to get out and about around the Orme.
-
That's pretty similar to me, we used to trek the Orme as kids and now we've got our own children you can really appreciate that it's the simple things like walking, climbing and just getting out and about together that builds a memory!
There's a place for Play Stations and Nintendo's, etc, in small doses.....but you can't beat the Great Outdoors ! (Says me, addicted to this thing and sitting at the computer for hours !!!!)
-
but, to get back to Bri's post
How many people are actually interested in Shakespeare nowadays, it must be a really small minority
and I agree with Bri's thinking that something more modern, fun and in tune with what kids want today should be appearing at Venue Cymru during the school holidays.
-
I've never seen any Shakespeare, I've no idea whats going on there, I'll stick with films like
Pulp Fiction 8)
-
http://www.venuecymru.co.uk/details.php?id=1002 (http://www.venuecymru.co.uk/details.php?id=1002)
This might be more enjoyable for kids, and a great introduction to Shakespeare, in preparation for when they have to study it at GCSE!
Merddin Emrys if you ever feel like seeing any Shakespeare you can often find an outdoor production during the Summer, at places like Conwy Castle and Bodnant gardens, (not the Great Orme unfortunately, shame there isn't an open air theatre there) :'(
My favourite ever was Macbeth at Denbigh Castle which was an amazing setting, chilling in all senses of the word! My daughters boyfriend came with us last time to Conwy Castle, (I think it was Two Gentlemen of Verona) not expecting to enjoy it at all but thought it was fantastic and wants to go again next time.
-
I studied Shakespeare at school and liked it.....then I went to an outdoor performance of Shakespeare at Rhuddlan Castle.
I loved the atmosphere, but didn't understand a word of it. I fell out with Shakespeare that night.

In that case, somebody should have considered offering a concession for children and/or an option for parents to purchase a family ticket.
-
I loved the atmosphere, but didn't understand a word of it. I fell out with Shakespeare that night.
One big problem is that Shakespeare is tough for amateur or smallish companies to perform. To deliver the lines so that they make sense to an audience used to modern enunciation, cadence and usage isn't easy, which is why we have companies like the RSC, who tend to do it rather well. Seeing and hearing it done poorly can put kids off Shakespeare for life.
-
Sometimes the people in a position to put this in place aren't motivated to do it, through either ignorance or elitism, for instance when the management of Theatre Clwyd got rid of the various community groups using the facitilies.
-
That was a bad move.
-
seen one, seen them all, and those damn drummers :rage:
I will be booking another holiday miles away from the hulla-balloo! :P
-
Trouble with Shakespeare is making sense of the words. It always seems to make more sense if you are reading it than just hearing it. In the past I have noticed that 'Shakespeare Buffs' seem to take the 'script' along and read with the play.
Having been made to learn large chunks of it as a school girl I'm sure I really didn't know what I was spouting about! :o
-
Trouble with Shakespeare is making sense of the words.
True, but some plays are easier than others in that respect. Midsummer Night's Dream, Merchant of Venice, The Play that Can't be Named, R & J, Tempest. And if you're at all into poetry, they're quite fascinating.
-
I must confess to having played Bottom in Midsummer Night's Dream. I particularly enjoyed the Play within a Play and the exchange twixt Pyramus and Thisby!!! D)
-
Bottom has to be one of the best ever characters to play and watch, I would have liked to see your Bottom so to speak Yorkie!
-
I had a minor role with an Am Dram group that took a cut down version of MND to the National final of a one act drama competition, only to be told by a "southern lovey" judge that Shakespeare delivered in a "Northern accent" was quaint but not worthy of winning the competition. I'm not bitter ! it was only 25 years or so ago.
-
Oh Yorkie----
"My mistress with a monster is in love.
Near to her close and consecrated bower,
While she was in her dull and sleeping hour
A crew of patches, rude mechanicals----"
and so forth
See what I mean? A load of twaddle if you don't know the story ! ;D
-
absolutely baffling ??? makes no sense at all, glad I did'nt have to do that at school!

Originally RAF but later Army also, shufty or shufti became taking a look for possible dangers.
Back home, it was used simply for having a quick look (American. checking out).

This fantastic event, first run in 2009, incorporates the thrill of a sea swim, and a challenging cycle section on mainly closed roads around the Great Orme with its glorious vista over the North Wales Coast. The run route goes out along the Victorian Promenade and then over the Little Orme to Penrhyn Bay. I've owned a lot of these Herald based cars in the past, back when they were a lot cheaper!
-
Looks very nice too. Apart from a Ford Classic the only actual Classis car I have owned was a 6.3 Litre Jensen Interceptor. The engine was a Chrysler V8 of 6276 cc with TorqueFlite automatic transmission driving the rear wheels through a limited slip differential in a conventional Salisbury rear axle. The photo is of a similar car and colour to mine. Over the years I have owned (or had supplied) about 50 cars varying from a 1932 Austin 7 to a Mercedes 300D and lately the Honda S2000.

Good luck with the viewing, sounds a bit pricey, but if it is what you want---what the hell ;D

finally they have updated the poorly kept official web site
Good for food/drink and trinket sellers but I'll be avoiding it like the plague
It would be a good idea to have a full rehearsal of the event, steam engines and all about 6 weeks before the event. And if that's not enough a second showing about 8 weeks after the event. Three for the price of two! That would keep the town busy. D) WWW
-
I am honestly amazed that the Whats On section of the Extravaganza website still has last year's information on it? What on earth use is that when the event is on in a week or so? It would take less than an hour to update the site with basic information. Apparently, the website is provided by Pamaya - they should pull their finger out.

There's nothing worse than a website that's inaccurate, poorly written or out-of-date. The Extravaganza site ticks all the boxes in that respect, unfortunately, which is a real shame, as there's a huge amount of hard work been going on for the past nine months to bring this event to fruition, and this sort of thing makes a mockery of the endeavours of all the volunteers.
Pamaya's own site (http://www.pamaya.com/) by contrast is tightly written and well presented so I wonder if they're doing the Extravaganza one for free?

North Wales Coast Branch of the Aircrew Association is laying up its Standard
On 8 May, the North Wales Coast Branch of the Aircrew Association is laying up its Standard at Holy Trinity Church, Llandudno. Membership of the Association was open to anyone having been awarded a flying badge who was serving or who had served in the RAF, the Army, the Royal Navy or the forces of commonwealth and other nations. The national organisation recently resolved to disband the Association because of a dwindling number of members, many of whom were World War 2 veterans. Last year, the worldwide membership was 4500, down from a peak of over 40000 in the mid-1990s. With 75% of members being aged 80 or more, it was inevitable that the Association was experiencing a loss of energy and was becoming unviable.
The North Wales Coast Branch which meets at Llandudno’s RBL Club had, at its peak, over 60 members. However, in line with the national organisation, continuation has now become impractical and as a consequence, the Branch is disbanding this year. Its Standard is to be entrusted to the care of Holy Trinity Church at the 10.30 am service on Sunday 8 May and will be laid up in the church’s Memorial Chapel. The Rector of Llandudno Parish, the Rev Prebendary John Nice will receive the Standard for safe keeping from the Branch’s Chairman, Arfon Evans. The Branch’s Chaplain, the Rev Prebendary Robert Griffiths, Rector of Rhos-Cystennin Parish, will be the guest preacher.
Members, ex-members and other interested persons are welcome to attend.
-

Pamaya's own site is out of date, last blog entry was from December 2010 and their location map shows a shop in Penrhyn Bay which they vacated many months before that.
I seem to recall the Extravaganza site was constructed using WordPress, so Pamaya didn't have to do anything beyond construct the basic layout and graphics. I've constructed WordPress sites in the past and they are very straightforward to both setup and manage.

I notice the psychic, Sally Morgan, was on at Venue Cymru this evening.
Behind the theatre, there were two large trucks presumably for all her scenery.
Also, there were two top-of-the-range double decked coaches.
The type that each carries about 80 passengers.
I wonder why would a solo artist want to bring along two posh coaches? *&(
-
Manic Street Preachers + support act are playing in the arena tomorrow night. That might answer your dilemma
-
Correct.
This morning the two trucks are reversed up the Arena and five young men got off one of the two buses just after 11am to book in at the stage door and walk over to the Arena at the rear.
Round at the front, there were already a few people queuing up for a front row view.
Meanwhile, my missus told me Sally Morgan is driven to her venues by her husband and they like to arrive early to wander round the town.
I didn’t bother asking my missus how she knew that. :o
-
This Sunday, there is a hugely important road race, for runners, through the town and round the Orme.
I read some time ago that traders could expect a bonanza weekend due to this.
But, I fear that the opposite will actually be true.
I have enquired, and it seems that many roads will be closed, thereby preventing any day trippers getting into town.
Also, the route of the race, (and the length of it) and the number of participants, will mean that people will not be able to physically access many parts of the town (such as The Pier)
Does anyone have any information on this? It appears to be a case of mis-selling by the organisers and local press, once again.
Good news for the Hoteliers perhaps?
-
You're quite right, Fester, from the road signs it looks as if half the town will be closed but it's difficult to make out which roads will and will not be open. I've tried to find a map of the closed roads, to see whether my elderly mother has a chance of getting a taxi to church. On the race's website there is a photographic tour of the course which describes the route:
http://www.llandudno10.co.uk/photos.html (http://www.llandudno10.co.uk/photos.html)
while the "Rhyl Journal" website lists the closed roads:
http://www.rhyljournal.co.uk/news/102501/llandudno-ready-for-first-10-mile-race.aspx (http://www.rhyljournal.co.uk/news/102501/llandudno-ready-for-first-10-mile-race.aspx)
Has anyone found any better information than this?

WEST PARADE Between Dale Road and Abbey Road
ABBEY ROAD, Between West Parade and Church Walks
CHURCH WALKS, Between Abbey Road and North Parade

-
I've plotted that on a map, and it's madness. It effectively prevent anyone getting into or leaving Llandudno during the times stated. And I can't see that they['ll be able to ban vehicles entirely; what about residents?
-
I've been in contact with the Police who know nothing about this. They're making enquires as I type, and they'll be getting back to me as soon as they find out anything. The chap to whom I spoke suspected it was part of the local council that's taken this on themselves.
I pointed out that a lot of folk have to get in and out of the town during the stated hours.
-
I noticed today that a lot of metal barriers had started to appear on pavements around town, presumably to be used for the road closures on Sunday.
My concern would be for the businesses in town that are going to be affected by this, many are finding the going hard enough as it is.
-
the signs that i,ve seen around town say roads will be closed between 11 am till 2 30 pm mind dos,nt supprise us the police not knowing
-
Apparently, it was Conwy CC that authorised the road closures, and the Police have been asked to enforce them. The PVC in charge of that is ringing me tomorrow with the answer (I hope) to my question.
-
Thank you everybody. It seems to be as bad as I feared.
Looks like yet another dead day for me tradewise, just what I need at the moment...and many, many other self employed types.
It seems like I have yet another 'forced' day off.
Forgive me if I don't rejoice, the next time the press tell me that a 'bonanza event' is on its way.
-

Forgive me if I don't rejoice, the next time the press tell me that a 'bonanza event' is on its way.
Looks like an enforced day off for me too Fester but I have to say that I am totally, utterly, 100% behind this event.
The WAG have invested time and money into this race in attempt to make it Wales' "Great North Run". If they manage to make it a major event on the national racing circuit it will attract many thousands of runners and supporters to the town each year.
Incidentally, there's a two and a half hour time limit on the race so I don't see why the roads should be closed for longer than that.
Many of these visitors perhaps would not have considered visiting Llandudno were it not for this event. How many I wonder, on discovering the beauty of North Wales, will return to buy smellies and oilies and enjoy taxi rides!
-
If they manage to make it a major event on the national racing circuit it will attract many thousands of runners and supporters to the town each year.
Not if they advertise it the same way, by indicating that all the roads you need to get into the town will be closed.
In fact, I can't believe that "no vehicles will be allowed on the following Llandudno roads:" for the times stated, as that will make the Extravaganza seem like a picnic by comparison. No, this one has been organised abysmally, because even if it's not as bad as they're suggesting, then it was up to them to have made that manifestly clear well before the event.
-
I'm with Paddy on this, I think it is great that events like this happen in Llandudno. All the signs I have seen say that roads are closed between 11 and 3. In a few weeks the town will host a major triathlon event and looking further ahead the GB Rally is coming to town. This really puts the town on the map, people visit for these events and others like the extravaganza; they are often first time visitors or have not been here for many years. They are really impressed by what they find and are far more likely to come back with the family for a weekend or short break. Therefore businesses might and do 'lose' out on the day of these events but will probably 'win' on the re-visits.
Its unfair to comment on the effect of road closures and the organisation of the event before a pair of trainers has even set foot on the course. I am looking forward to running the course tomorrow. Having run the London Marathon a few times what is really noticeable is the support of the local people who come out and cheer you along, who offer you sweets and jelly beans to keep your energy up and don't seem too bothered about a few road closures. It would be nice if Llandudno can extend a warm welcome to the runners many who will be running for local charities and good causes.
-

I have no objection to the event per se, but to the lamentable organisation. And here's another little item: the cabinet apparently took the decision to close the roads without any consultation whatsoever. The full council knew nothing about it until after the event.
-
Have been down this road as I have American people arriving by train tomorrow and asked the council
Thank you for your email.
With regards to guests reaching you from the train station, the route should be quite straightforward, though it may be a little slower than usual. They can head directly to you along Augusta Street, Madoc Street and Chapel Street. Although Gloddaeth Street will be closed for the duration of the race, a crossing point will be available for traffic to cross from Chapel Street over to Arvon Avenue from which they can turn into Abbey Road to your guest house; this Gloddaeth Street crossing point will be manned by trained Stop/Go board operatives. Obviously, there may be some delays at the crossing point as the operatives wait for appropriate gaps in the runners to allow the traffic to cross.
We have been assured by the race organisers that although the roads are officially closed, they are endeavouring to minimise disruption to residents/visitors: Access will be maintained as much as possible prior to the race and roads will be reopened in stages along the route once the last runner has passed through. Crossing points have been arranged so that people can get across to the Great Orme side of the town and an amendment was made to the race route to ensure free flow of traffic around the busy retail parks.
With regards the list of road closures, we can send you a copy of the Temporary Traffic Notice, but first off I would advise you try looking at the race website www.llandudno10.co.uk (http://www.llandudno10.co.uk) where there is an aerial view picture of Llandudno with the race route marked on (on the main home page, scroll down towards the bottom of the page to find this). This gives a good indication of the open roads, and as I mentioned earlier, there are crossing points in place to get to and from some of the areas that appear to be ‘hemmed in’.
Please note that all concerns and complaints that have been raised will be brought to the attention of the race organisers and the council’s Marketing team, who have been liaising with the organisers so that issues can be resolved or learnt from if/when the event is staged in the future.
I hope this information helps, if you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kind regards,
Lucy

All the signs I have seen say that roads are closed between 11 and 3.
Between 7am-2:30pm on Sunday, May 22, no vehicles will be allowed on the following Llandudno roads:
I have no objection to the event per se, but to the lamentable organisation. And here's another little item: the cabinet apparently took the decision to close the roads without any consultation whatsoever. The full council knew nothing about it until after the event.
I too welcome any such events to the town. BUT...only if they are professionally organised and properly though through.
Case in point, The Triathalon. That was a major success last year...and I look forward to it again this year. I was even lucky enough to benefit trade-wise from that event. But even if I hadn't, it caused the minimum of disruption, and was excellently planned and publicised.
-
Wouldn't it be more logical for them to start at Craig-Y-Don, run down the prom & around the Orme finishing somewhere in West Shore (or vice-versa) thus keeping the town open and causing the least disruption???
-

SDQ, that would be a good route and the Nick Beer race, which is held anually, does go round the Orme and is a very challenging 10k.
The organisers of this event seem to be trying to attract runners wanting to beat their best 10 mile time (PB) by marketing the event as "flat and fast".
-
Yes, good idea. I think we all welcome the race to the town but it's important that it is set up in such a way as to not inconvenience all the residents/other visitors.

Morning and Evening seems to be the best times, usually some super cars there.

We went to see the Three Castles run this morning at about 8am, some great cars there, we'll be back again tomorrow morning, hopefully the sun will be shining! D)

Road Closures on the Great Orme, Friday 3 June & Saturday 4 June
for the Three Castles Welsh Classic Trial
Marine Drive will be closed from the toll gate by the pier to the junction with Llys Helig Drive:
Friday 3 June, from 00.01 hrs to 11.00 hrs
Saturday 4 June, from 00.01 hrs to 18.00 hrs
St. Tudno's Road (i.e. from the Halfway Station to Marine drive) will be closed:
Saturday 4 June 00.01 hrs to 18.00 hrs
The roads are supposed to be closed to pedestrians as well as traffic.
I have had this information from the organisers, who have provided passes for those needing access to places on the Great Orme which would otherwise be cut off. I suggested to them that it would be helpful, and good PR, if they posted this information on the Forum, particularly considering the debacle of road closures for the Llandudno 10. I was told that they had had some discussions with Ian and so I have been waiting for something to appear. As time is running out, I've posted it myself.

Nice Jag and Maserati there. :)
Was the Jag a 3.8 or 4.2 litre straight six? Apparently, the six cylinder was quicker than the V12 version.
-
Would've been nice for someone to mention it to the residents Marine Drive and of the Orme, $angry$ I only found out about the rally because of a neighbour who accidentially found out 2nd hand. Do the rights of local people not matter any more?
-
As far as I can see, the residential part of Marine Drive will not be affected directly but there are, of course, likely to be knock-on effects due to changed traffic patterns on the Orme. For example last year when St. Tudno's Road was closed, the traffic on Ty Gwyn Road was very heavy and resulted in some considerable jams in the narrow part of the road where cars tend to be parked. I mentioned this at a meeting with one of the organisers in October but I do not know whether there will be any parking restrictions this year to improve traffic flow.
-
Does anyone know what the new business is thats converting the church on Bod-hyfryd road / Abbey Road? I though it was the canoe people (forgot the proper name) but someone told me it was going to be a kiddies play centre? I spotted an 'opening soon' sign outside but didn't notice what it was.
-
I've heard it's something to do with Youth Services / Youth Club type venue.
-
It says it is called Bonkerz.
I assumed it was a kids indoor play area..
Such a thing is desperately needed in Llandudno in bad weather.. but that location is a little too far from the main area for 'real success', in my humble opinion.
It may be a daycare centre though? A well guarded secret perhaps!
Good luck to them though.

There will be Pet Blessing service at St. Tudno's on Sunday.
-
:o :o :o WHY ??? :o :o
-
See your previous post?
:D
-
:o :o :o WHY ??? :o :o
Why not?! :)
Some pets are very important members of their families and there are a number of dogs which are regular members of the congregation at St. Tudno's. This is a chance for anyone to bring their pet along as part of the family, whatever the pet is, and at previous services pets have ranged from stick insects to a donkey. Everyone is welcome, whether you have a pet or not. :)
-
I rang my Aunt to let her know, but she said she can't take her Great Dane as he's a Catholic. :-X

Obviousl you aren't an 'animal person' or you wouldn't need to ask that question. All my animals, birds, fish and reptile are cared for and loved and had I been a church goer I would have been only too pleased to have them welcomed and blessed.
-
Be fair... I actually am a pet owner, in fact I have a pet bird that I love to bits....
... for the last few months she has been living at Merddin Emrys house, until my building nightmare is brought to an end.
But as much as I love her, I wouldn't bother with a church blessing for her. She would most likely peck the vicar.
Maybe when she gets married?? then its her choice!
-
_))* _))* _))* _))*
Here comes the Bird !!!
-
Also, despite me being a Christian ... what if my bird chose to be a Zen Bhuddist for example?
No. It all seems very odd to me.
-
I'm definitely not a Christian ( older religions interest me more ;) ) but it seems a very nice idea to me, people love their pets often more than family and neighbours and I seem to recall it worked very well on The vicar of Dibley some years ago!
-
It all seems very odd to me.
There are theological precedents, but most won't realise, or have any clue about those, I suspect. Technically, a 'blessing' is through to impart some aspect of 'divine' protection, or to imbue the blessed with some degree of spiritual association, which actually sounds even odder, to me, at any rate. But then - the Christian church is hardly a homogeneous entity.
-
The Rector says that the Pet Blessing service is a celebration of the love and affection which people give to and receive from their pets. Does that make it any clearer?
As I've said before, EVERYONE is welcome.
-
I gave (and recieved) an awful lot of love and affection from my Poppy last night, (Didn't I Merddin?)
But... I fear that if I took her to church, she might get a little jittery.
-

yes you did :-* ;D she would be ok in her cage, I'm wondering what 20 or so pigeons would make of it all? :) I still think it's a great idea!

There's a very small brass band playing outside the cafe on the coach park, Mostyn Broadway. They were playing quietly but I could still hear them at B & Q. Very good I think they are youngsters and quite a crowd watching.

A PHOTOGRAPHIC exhibition highlights a resort’s Victorian heritage.
Organised by Llandudno and Colwyn Bay History Society, the displays run at Llandudno Museum until November 12. The show will be titled “Victorian Photographs and Souvenirs of Llandudno”.
A spokesman said: “There are over 50 photographs depicting life in Victorian times including rare images of Custs path, the predecessor to the Marine Drive, Llandudno's first pier which was badly damaged in the great storm of 1859, North Shore pre-Grand hotel, and many more.”
The exhibition also honours photographers William Laroche, William Lee and Slaters Photographers.
Visitors can see rare Mauchline Ware and ceramics depicting Llandudno scenes.

The Cellar Dwellers are playing at The Townhouse on Saturday 12th Nov. Call in, we always seem to have a great night night there.

Don't know about that Ian but because of this there will be no bell ringing as is usual on a Friday evening!

I don't know about the piano, either. "Carmen" contacted the parish to ask if she could use Holy Trinity as a venue but I don't have any more information than is on the poster.

Performance by Beulah Brass from noon
In aid of St. Tudno's Church
St. Tudno's church is currently being re-roofed and the costs have been met without grant aid. However, this will leave the "coffers" empty, while additional repair work has been required during the renovation. It is important that we continue fundraising!
-
Had a poster delivered yesterday-- will see if I can make it.
-
Called in this a.m. Pity about cancelling the bungee jump due to the high winds!!
Bought a lovely card in the shop in Church though.
-
Nemesis, I've said in reply to one of your other posts, I'm just catching up with the Forum. I'm sorry I didn't see you (though I did see Hollins) and I'm sorry about the bungee jump, which is rather weather dependent. Glad you got a nice card, though.
-
Thanks-- haven't found anyone to send it to yet though!

Russian Choral Concert

The re-roofing and renovation work at St. Tudno's Church has now been completed and there will be special service on Sunday to celebrate this. If you supported Sponsor-a-Slate, perhaps you'd like to come along and see the result.

Tonight, the Festers are off to The Cross Keys, Madoc Street, to see the most excellent Two Suns.
A rock covers band, who specialise in such groups as Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Wishbone Ash, Van Halen, Whitesnake etc...
They have a lady who plays guitar better than any MAN I have ever seen. Z** Z**
Can't wait.
-
I saw them at Headstock Fester and thoroughly enjoyed them. It got me wondering if maybe we could get all the local bands into VC for one or two days a year for a mini festival to celebrate local talent.
-
I am going to see them again, in Betws y Coed on 9th September... Superb.
-
Rock & Roll is something that should be played by kids with attitude, not middle aged people.
-
All the best rockers are middle aged.... or even old..... or indeed DEAD! $elvis$
-
that,s what my dad told me Dave, how wrong was he. Long live rock and roll
-
I am going to see them again, in Betws y Coed on 9th September... Superb.
.
hi fester, I can't find info on this, where in betws are they playing.I haven't seen them before but thought it might be worth a look.
-
Not 100% sure, I'll come back to you on this.
Apparently Two Suns are organising (and headlining) a festival that day..... Facebook has the answers, but I am not a Facebooker!
-
that,s what my dad told me Dave, how wrong was he. Long live rock and roll
No, he was right! It's just embarrassing to see middle aged bald men or women that look like librarians playing rock music, however good they are. Rock music is as much about the energy/attitude of youth as the actual music. There's so much fantastic new talent out there.
If only The Who had stuck to their principles when they sang "Why don't you all just f-f-f-f-fade away..." &shake&
-
It's just embarrassing to see middle aged bald men or women that look like librarians playing rock music, however good they are.
Might be okay on the radio? WWW
-
As long as they are still good then I can't see that age matters at all, it's the music that matters, I can't see any more supergroups on the way like we've had in the past sadly. On the otherhand Paul Macartney and Rod Stewart (and others!) should definitely pack it in!
Interestingly I've become a big fan of Brit Floyd who play Pink Floyd's music perfectly, they are a lot younger but playing great music! They have played in Llandudno twice now, well worth seeing! $good$
-
That's right, the music itself is great and performances from when they were in their prime are fantastic. But middle aged people playing this sort of music just isn't right... &shake&
-
Hopefully Brit Floyd will return to Llandudno next year, don't miss them! $good$
-

Shouldn't you have added 'in my opinion' after that remark?
You see its just not fair to say that.
Given that millions of people still wish to pay to see the supergroups, then they will (and should) continue to perform.
I will be off to see Motorhead in Manchester again soon, they are downright ancient, but seeing as they aren't likely to get any younger and I love the music, what am I supposed to do?
It's a supply and demand thing when all is said and done.
-
I agree with............Fester! $good$
-
........... I agree with him too!
-
And me, they may be older ,but they still entertain.and I shall be at motorhead soon too.
-
Shouldn't you have added 'in my opinion' after that remark?
At risk of stating of the obvious....everyone's post on here is just their opinion. Silly chuff.
-
The best example of longevity I can think of is the Rolling Stones. I last saw them live in Sheffield in 2006. They were brilliant and especially Mick Jagger now aged 69! He is so fit!
Rolling stones in Sheffield - Bigger Bang Tour (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMV_rzhk_Rw#noexternalembed)
Maybe he doesn't count in DaveR's comparison because I suppose he is not "middle aged" any more!
Mind you, I would agree with DaveR when talking about Elton John, ugh! Should have retired gracefully years ago.
-
Yes, as I said if they are still very good then age should not matter, on the other hand some should have never started at any age ;D
-
Still love to see and hear Quo and Dylan
-
Yes, as I said if they are still very good then age should not matter
You only have to look back at the Live 8 concert to confirm this. Performers of all ages played during the event and were all blown away by four old fogies that came on at the end. Mind you, it was the one (and only) time that Pink Floyd reformed after much pressure from a certain Mr. Geldof!
-
Hollins said...''Maybe he doesn't count in DaveR's comparison because I suppose he is not "middle aged" any more!''
Well Hollins, I recall my Dad saying that when he was 74, he suddenly realised he was middle-aged.
I had to disappoint him by telling him that I had not yet met a 148 year old man, and he was in fact an OLD man!

Saturday: Church Open Day with the Friends of St. Tudno's Church (http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/st_tudno_friends.html)

??? Tomorrow is Friday surely ?
-
Thanks, Nemesis, it should indeed be Saturday!!
These posts don't make sense now as, thanks to Nemesis's eagle eye and quick response, I was in time to change "Tomorrow" on my post (which would have been Friday) to "Saturday".
We're getting ready tomorrow, which is perhaps what confused my simple brain. ???
The open day IS on Saturday. Hope that makes sense now!
-
No probs-- hope I haven't confused matters too much!

On Saturday night, Mrs F and I were doing our usual triangle of Fat Cat - Fountains - London, when she noticed a sign outside The Gresham saying 'Classical Guitarist, Live music tonight'
We popped in and were treated to an incredible performance of classical and Spanish guitar.
It was really excellent, and as a (very poor) guitarist myself, I was able to appreciate a flawless rendition.
More to the point of this thread, the Guitarist is booked again in the Gresham for the next two Saturday nights from 8pm.
We have booked a table for two, to enjoy an evening of tapas and music, can't wait!
