Development of seaside town centre units will 'bring 'something fresh to Llandudno'
Sion Pritchard and Rich Blake, directors of LVL5 Gyms Ltd, want to bring a fitness complex to the empty retail/restaurant units

The backers of a planned new health, exercise and wellbeing complex say it will breathe life into a seaside town centre and give the economy a welcome lift. Sion Pritchard and Rich Blake, directors of LVL5 Gyms Ltd, are awaiting a decision on plans to transform empty units next to a new Premier Inn at the former Tudno Castle hotel site in Llandudno.

They plan to create a high-quality gym, coffee and smoothie bar, changing rooms, sauna, spin zones and more. The 6,000 square metre two-floor facility will employ up to 10 people and both Sion and Rich ? who hail from Conwy county ? are hopeful their proposals for the coastal resort will be supported by the local community.

EFFORTS are being ramped up to get four paddling pools deemed "too slippery" open for the summer.

Conwy County Borough Council was slammed by Darren Millar, MS for Clwyd West, after saying it would not be re-opening its pools in Craig y Don, Llanfairfechan, Penmaenmawr and Rhos on Sea as normal this May and for claiming the "only UK provider" was unable to carry out work [to apply a specialist anti-slip coating to surfaces] due to sudden ill health.

Now, after pressure from politicians and the public, the council is stepping up efforts to resolve the situation.

"We had contractual arrangements in place to undertake the work but unfortunately we have been let down at the last minute due to specific issues within the firm employed.

"We are urgently trying to find an alternative solution, including sourcing other products that meet the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommended requirements and ensure the safety of everyone using our paddling pools.

"In the meantime, preparatory work will be starting on site to enable the works to progress as soon as practically possible."

The council made the decision not to open its paddling pools following a full safety audit of all sites. Some areas were deemed as "a high slip risk".

Mr Millar slammed the decision and said a "simple internet search seems to suggest that there are many firms offering a solution to these sorts of problems."

He added: "They are well-used used by locals and visitors alike, so for them not to be open this summer would be disastrous ?I simply do not accept that there is no solution available in the council and urge the local authority to get its act together and try harder to rectify the problem.

?I did a quick internet search and it appears that there are a number of firms offering a solution to this issue. ?If this is not sorted quickly young children and their families will really miss out and people will simply choose to go elsewhere."

LLANDUDNO has started to fly the European Union (EU) flag on the town?s North Shore promenade.

Currently, UK home nation flags and a number of international flags are flown during May until  September.

This year, Cllr Dr Rob Atenstaedt, who represents the town?s Tudno Ward for the Welsh Liberal Democrats, brought a proposal to the town council to add the EU flag to this number.

Cllr Atenstaedt said: ?Llandudno is a premier tourist destination for both UK and non-UK residents. A large proportion of non-UK visitors are from European nations.

?The EU has 448 million residents and by far the largest proportion of European visitors to Llandudno live in the EU.

?Llandudno also has a large number of residents who are from countries in the EU including Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Romania.

?Many of these individuals do important work in our hospitality industry and also work in care homes caring for our elderly.

?One recognised way of making an individual feel welcome is by displaying their nation?s flag.

?As there are 27 nations in the EU, it is very unlikely that the flags of the individual nations will be displayed very often.

?I was therefore delighted that the town council accepted my proposal to fly the EU flag so that we can welcome visitors and residents from the 27 EU nations.

?This will help reinforce Llandudno?s image of a town which welcomes our European visitors and residents who make such a valuable contribution to our local economy.? ref pioneer

Paddling pool victory after Conwy council 'finds contractor'
Senedd member Janet Finch-Saunders says council has told her that they now have someone to do the anti-slip work

I'm pleased that something is going to be done about this popular children's paddling pool.        There was no anti slip problem when I used to use the pool nearly 70 years ago so what has happened since?

New beachfront will be 'envy of North Wales' - especially Llandudno
Dramatic photos show progress of the stunning redevelopment of Rhos on Sea promenade

Already some residents believe they have ?one of the best beaches in North Wales?. Now, as these photos show, an adjacent promenade is taking shape in the seaside town of Rhos-on-Sea, Conwy.

Last August, the new raised beach reopened after one million tonnes of seabed sand were piped ashore. But for the second part of the town?s coastal defence scheme to be completed, residents have had to wait a little longer.

In a progress report, Conwy Council said much work on the revamped promenade has been completed but more is needed. Kerbs, paving slabs and drains are currently being installed, to be followed by benches and play equipment.

Builders defend record on Llandudno's 'awful' Victorian tram shelter
Brenig Construction have vowed to help bring the historic structure back to its former glory

A building firm has hit back at criticism over the "awful" state of a tram shelter in Llandudno. Brenig Construction said plans are in the works to restore the historic rectangular tram shelter on Gloddaeth Avenue and bring it "back to its former glory".

A spokesman for the company said it was ploughing ahead with the project as a "community benefit" and are not being paid to renovate the site. The defence comes after the state of the shelter was highlighted in a post on the Friends of West Shore Facebook page.

"It stood on the North Shore promenade for many years and was moved in 1928 or 1929 to its current location to make way for the band stand on North Shore. So we have a solid structure built by Victorian engineers that has lasted 150 years and a renewed roof by Brenig that lasted barely 150 days before it started to disintegrate and lapse into the state that it is in today!"

DECK chairs will be available for hire on Llandudno promenade this summer, despite having not been installed yet this year.
With weather generally improving, and with a busy summer season set to draw tourists to the resort town, members of the public had worried that there would be no deck chairs along the popular promenade.

Some had criticised the council, adding that the town had already lost its donkey rides and sandy beaches.

It also remains to be seen whether the paddling pool in Craig y Don will open this summer, with the council having secured a new contractor for paint upgrades.

New 50p toilet charge at Llandudno's 'bog island' and eight other locations splits opinion
The price to spend a penny at the public loos in Conwy has gone up by 20p with the council admitting it has had to make difficult decisions to keep them open

Customers must also pay the new 50p charge - previously 30p - at toilets elsewhere in Llandudno and in Deganwy, Colwyn Bay, Llanfairfechan, Betws-y-Coed, Capel Curig, Pentroefoelas, Penmachno and Towyn. Other toilets in the county remain free to use.

A NEW group of volunteers has been formed to help return the centre of Llandudno back to its former glory.

?Friends of Mostyn Street? has been set up by residents and business owners working together to enhance the streetscape of Llandudno?s town centre and make it an even more welcoming place.

With the strong support of many businesses, the group is determined to give some sparkle back to the town and ensure it?s at its best for years to come.

It held its first public meeting in late April at Llandudno Town Hall, when about 50 people came to share their suggestions about how the centre of Llandudno could be improved.

This ranged from general weeding and repainting of railings and street furniture, to larger-scale hopes for the future, such as funding the restoration of the original feature Victorian lampposts and refurbishment of the verandas and shopfronts along the streets.

Since then, volunteers have met twice on a Wednesday for an evening of action, with up to 15 people donning tabards and gloves to clean each corner of the Carlton roundabout at the top of Mostyn Street.

The work was appreciated by passers-by, as well as the management of the new Ormo Lounge bar, who provided the group with hot drinks as a gesture of thanks and goodwill.

The aim is to focus on a specific area of Mostyn Street and the shopping streets adjacent to it each Wednesday during the summer.

Examples of streets in the area covered by the Friends of Mostyn Street include Gloddaeth Street, Lloyd Street, Madoc Street and Vaughan Street.

Gini Rivers, of Friends of Mostyn Street, said: ?Like other members of the group, I want to see a clean and presentable shopping area that we can all be proud of.

?A little bit of elbow grease and commitment each week will make the difference, banish the weeds, and remind us how lucky we are to live, work and visit Llandudno.

?Friends of Mostyn Street has brought together people keen to put words into action and upgrade Llandudno town centre.

?I would urge anyone who can spare an hour after work to join us and help ensure our town centre remains the jewel in the crown of the queen of Welsh resorts.?

Keep Wales Tidy has strongly supported the group from the start and is providing litter-picking equipment and expertise at every step.

Anyone wishing to join the group is welcome to contact mail@friendsofmostynstreet.co.uk for further information about the location of the working party.

Working parties will take place each Wednesday evening, 5.30-6.30pm.

'Anti-slip' preparatory works take place at Craig-y-Don paddling pool

Workers were seen on site at Craig y Don paddling pool on Monday, May 22. One reader told the Pioneer that two men were stripping paint off.

Coast - who has opened its new cafe near Craig-y-Don paddling pool - posted on social media: "Great to see works have started on the paddling pool at Llandudno! It?s nice to see local business' completing local work.

A WELSH-English filmmaker based in London led the shooting of a short film in Llandudno earlier this month.
Jonny Williams, a student at London Film School, filmed the short production as part of his masters course between May 16 and 20.

Despite the chosen location for filming, the piece is entitled "Sharks in Colwyn Bay".

The short film was shot at both the West Shore Beach Caf?, on Dale Road, and The Mediterranean Restaurant, on Mostyn Street.
