From time to time, the old question of which method to use to see recent posts arises. There are - essentially - two possibilities:
- Show unread posts since last visit.
- Show new replies to your posts.
Although they appear similar, they do - in fact - serve different purposes. If you use only the second method, (
Show new replies to your posts.) the only listing you will see will be those replies to posts you have made. This is good if you're in a hurry, or don't want to interact with every new comment. It's also excellent for forums which deal with technical questions and have thousands of queries each day. If you've posted a query about something, you certainly don't want to be wading through 95000 replies to find yours.
In a small forum like this, however, it's important to remember that by using that method only,
you will miss half of what's happening. You'll miss all new posts that are made in topics to which you might not have contributed for a while, you'll miss responses to your posts after any housekeeping has been done but - perhaps most importantly in a community like this, where we aim to help each other - you won't see when someone has posted a query to which you might have the answer.
In short, if you want to keep in touch with everything on the forum, always use
Show unread posts since last visit
