I notice sometimes when the forum is slow to load it always seems to be down to some JavaScript pointing to betboopartners.com which appears to be a click-through betting advert that can bring in revenue to a web site/forum but I have never seen a gambling advert anywhere on the forum. Is this some defunct script still in the html or is it an advert that my Google Chrome just doesn't display?

I do find that sometimes pages with lots of pictures are very slow to load, however if the pictures are on Photobucket or Flickr then there is no delay.  It can't be anything to do with Betboo, the advert which you can see at the top of the page (and what an excellent website www.betboo.com is too  D) )

Yes;  it seems to be down not so much to the numbers of pictures per page, but more to the numbers in each posting. Particularly when someone posts a large number in several successive posts, then the browser keeps moving upwards as each picture loads.

We can reset the number of images allowed in a single posting to two and that might improve things a bit. Might be worth a try, anyway.

The other alternative ,as you suggest, is for folk to use sites like Photobucket or Flickr and simply post references to them from their posting. If enough people would like to know how, then I can post the instructions in Faqs.

You lot must have slow connections because I never have a problem with photos loading. Takes a few seconds and all is done.

The only thread that it may cause problems on is Walking and the photos add a great deal to the story being told.

Even with a fast connection the multi-image posts can take a few seconds. It's not the time, however, as much as the fact that you can't view the most recent post until the images have all loaded, because the browser resets the view area as each image loads.  It is only a few seconds, I grant you, but it's noticeable - particularly when you have a fast connection and become used to everything loading almost instantly.

It's not the number of images per se that we would reduce, merely the number in each posting. That would speed loading. It's simply that they'd be spread across more postings.

Finally spotted betboo tonight, never noticed it before, it always seems to be David Roberts Photography or some Emporium or other

Photo pages load very quick for me, it's just now and again that the betboo java script has problems but that may be their end.
As for cutting the limit to two photos per post, wont people just make more posts of two thereby defeating the object.

No, because it seems to be the way the server treats multiple images in a single post that slows things down and most aspects of a post are controlled by CSS coding, so that would 'pad' the breaks between photos and create an apparent speed increase.

From time to time, the old question of which method to use to see recent posts arises. There are - essentially - two possibilities:

  • Show unread posts since last visit.
  • Show new replies to your posts.

Although they appear similar, they do - in fact - serve different purposes. If you use only the second method, (Show new replies to your posts.) the only listing you will see will be those replies to posts you have made. This is good if you're in a hurry, or don't want to interact with every new comment. It's also excellent for forums which deal with technical questions and have thousands of queries each day.  If you've posted a query about something, you certainly don't want to be wading through 95000 replies to find yours.

In a small forum like this, however, it's important to remember that by using that method only, you will miss half of what's happening. You'll miss all new posts that are made in topics to which you might not have contributed for a while, you'll miss responses to your posts after any housekeeping has been done but - perhaps most importantly in a community like this, where we aim to help each other - you won't see when someone has posted a query to which you might have the answer.

In short, if you want to keep in touch with everything on the forum, always use Show unread posts since last visit

Well it doesn't quite work like that, Show unread posts since last visit only shows the last new post in a thread,
there could be twenty new posts in a thread but in the 'new post' list only the last one will show up.
