The Extravaganza committee is always on the lookout for fresh faces, new talent and willing volunteers. Having said that it's the timing which presents the biggest issue. In many ways it might make sense for the event to be run by members from the 3TF, but it's a far harder event to run than it appears.

The fairground element looks after itself, more or less, and the road closures, etc.  have already been sought and agreed, but the one time all hands are needed is during the week previous and the three days of the event itself.

If you're eager to become involved, shall I pass your details over to the organisers, Fester?  They'd be very glad to have you on board, but remember that you'd have to leave your stall on the pier for about seven days in total. It's a big ask...

I've been thinking about this.  (Always a dangerous thing for me to be doing)

The Extravaganza (love it or hate it) is a massively important event, and if there is such a big threat to its existence then surely there is a process that could be followed to salvage the situation.

All I have seen on this subject is a few unofficial posts on this forum.
So, is the threat THAT great?  If so, I would suggest the following course of action.

The Committee members should put out an appeal to the local community, asking for people with management experience and spare time to devote, to come forward.  Heaven knows there are lots of such people in this area.
Then, and more importantly, spell out what is actually needed to be done.

Personally, from the little I have seen, it is made out to be something akin to having to eat a whole raw cow for dinner.
But when faced with something as daunting as that, simply break the tasks down into a list which can be shared out, and apportion responsibilities to those who come forward.

Even I was wondering whether I should offer my services, but no one is giving me any idea of what I would be letting myself in for?  So obviously I keep schtum.  I imagine many others will feel likewise.

Let us know what is required, what needs to be done, and you may well be inundated with volunteers.

Having spoken to the acting chairman yesterday I'm assured this year's event will go ahead as originally planned but I'm sure there can never be enough volunteers.

But i was led to believe that the entire event was under threat, or at best drastically downscaled, for the want of a leader?  It would seem that the panic is over and management control has been re-established. I look forward to once again patronising and enjoying the event. Z**

It's been permanently "under threat" for years, and it needs many more volunteers to keep it going.

Maybe they should ask for some then? The whole thing seems shrouded in secrecy - who actually is on the committee? I have no idea who is on it, can anyone name them? Why are the accounts not published on their website etc etc. Transparency is necessary if they wish to attract more support.

I am surprised to learn it is not a registered charity.

Their accounts, DaveR, are available to purchase online from Companies House for a small fee.

I am also surprised to note the resignation of the Town Mayor as a Director just before Xmas as well as how often its registered office has changed since its incorporation.

I guess there must be a reasonable explanation for it all.

Can't be a registered charity because it has a single purpose to raise funds for the event itself.  That is why it is registered as a Company limited by Guarantee.

Thank you, Yorkie.

When I used to support the event with a paid business advert, I always thought I was supporting a not-for-profit organisation.

Do you happen know what it was then before it became a Limited Company in 1997.

Not sure I understand that list.... surely Mr Owen was involved for more than three days??

Anyhow, is the panic officially over now?

It always was a not-for-profit organisation;  in that sense, nothing's changed. However, after the founders of the event had had enough in the late 1990s, the Heritage Trust (a registered charity) assumed the mantle, and created the Heritage Company to handle the financial side of  the Extravaganza. It remained like that until 1995.  What happened after that I don't know.

And that is only a list of the Documents lodged at Companies House - what other matters are concealed under the surface?     ;)
