THE first civil wedding ceremony has taken place at Gwrych Castle.

Jill Adamson and her partner Nick Clitheroe tied the knot at the I?m A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! castle near Abergele, on Friday, May 19. The couple, who live in Rhyl, are both 60.

This was the first civil ceremony at the castle since the restoration first began.

I'm A Celeb: Gwrych Castle wedding venue bid complaints
The north Wales castle which hosted I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! has applied to become a wedding venue, sparking noise and safety objections.

The 19th century Gwrych Castle staged the ITV show in 2020 and 2021 because lockdown restrictions prevented the programme from travelling to Australia.

Castle bosses said since the show it has become "incredibly popular" among visitors to Abergele, Conwy county.

But some locals say its trust should not hold a licence.
It wants to sell alcohol from 10am to 1am seven days a week as well as host live music.

It is good to see the castle being put to some use after all the years of it falling into decay. This has to be the way to get it back to a decent standard and open to the public for a variety of purposes. I remember when it was an entertainment venue in the 1960s and had all manner of attractions there. The public flocked to see the castle, the grounds and other entertainments. It used to be packed out in the summer months. It needs to be open and in use, not let to rot as it was for so many years. The locals should be more reasonable.

Plans to restore roof at I'm a Celeb castle near Abergele

The restoration of a now famous Abergele castle has moved forward, following a planning application being submitted to Conwy.

Dr Mark Baker, of the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust, has submitted two separate planning applications to renovate the 19th-century gothic ruin on Llanddulas Road.

Having recently been granted permission to hold weddings ceremonies and events at the castle, the charity is now hoping to replace several of the buildings? temporary roofs.

The application includes plans for a new slated roof to replace a temporary roof over the blacksmith?s building, which is also known as the coach house.

I'm a Celebrity castle to be 'saved from collapse' with ?2.2m cash injection
Funding has been awarded by the National Heritage Memorial Fund to protect Gwrych Castle

Gwrych Castle has been given a ?2.2m lifeline by the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) as part of their Covid-19 Response Fund. The impressive Grade I listed building is one of Britain?s most important castellated mansions and has been identified by Cadw as an irreplaceable cultural asset.

In more recent years, the castle gained new public attention after becoming the UK base of ITV?s I?m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. The castle was used during the 2020 and 2021 series when pandemic travel restrictions prevented stars from jetting off to the usual Australian set.

That money should go a long way to preserving the building which is a prominent feature in Abergele.    Many years ago they had medieval  themed evenings in the castle and I remember going to some of them.     The one thing I can clearly remember about the inside of the place was the very impressive staircase

AN EVENT not for the faint of heart is coming to Gwrych Castle.

Escape Alive, a fully immersive Halloween castle tour featuring "scary surprises and terror lurking around every shadowy corner", is coming to the sprawling site that is in the process of being restored.

A spokesperson for Escale Alive said: "The truly terrifying experience will take place at Gwrych Castle this October. Gwrych Castle is an enchanting gothic ruin on the picturesque North Wales coastline, with spectacular sea views and impressive architecture. Many will be familiar with the castle as it was the location for ITV?s first ever UK-based I'm A Celebrity? Get Me Out of Here! AN EXTRA special fireworks display will light up the skies over the I'm A Celebrity castle.

This will take place on November 4. Gwrych Castle, near Abergele, have teamed up with Co.creative Performance Company in Prestatyn for the event.

The performing arts was founded by performing artist Chlo? Waggett in 2021. After studying at London's Urdang Academy and graduating Bird College in 2018, Chlo? has built up a background of performing, teaching and directing experience.

A spokesperson for Gwrych Castle said: "Our firework displays have been a regular date in the calendar for many years, this year we?ve decided to expand on our usual offering and have teamed up with Co.creative Performance Company based in Prestatyn to provide our visitors with something extra special.

AN ARCHITECTURAL practice specialising in conservation have been appointed to take on the next stage of works at Gwrych Castle.

Chambers Conservation were appointed after the I'm A Celeb castle secured a huge ?2.2million from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) as part of their Covid-19 Response Fund.

The money will save the ruin from "imminent collapse" and enable the Gwrych Preservation Trust to reinstate the roof on the main building; the castle has been a "roofless ruin" for 30 years.

A spokesperson for Gwrych Castle told the Journal and Pioneer:  ?We are pleased to announce that Chambers Conservation have been appointed as the architects for the next phase of works for the rescue of Gwrych Castle. These initial designs explore the historic roof structure but will need reviewing to ensure that they are fit for purpose for the effects of climate change and allow accessibility for maintenance.

Update on above...

First look at I'm a Celeb castle's 'dream makeover' as global hunt launched for looted treasures
If things go to plan, restoration work on Gwrych Castle should start next summer

Guardians of Gwrych Castle aim to start replacing its roof next year and they hope its interior will be restored by 2026. But for the property to be familiar to the family that once owned it, lost and stolen treasures must be recovered and a global search has been launched to find them.

At the same time, the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust has begun assembling artworks that may eventually form a National Portrait Gallery for Wales. As well as paying homage to Gwrych?s long-dispersed collection, which stretched back to the early medieval period, the gallery would aim to tell the story of North Wales notables and the great houses they built.

'SCHOOL of Magic' is returning to the I'm A Celebrity castle.

The event will return for a second year to Gwyrch Castle, near Abergele, over February half term.

A spokesperson for Gwrych Castle said: "We launched School of Magic last year and we had great reviews and feedback, so we?ve brought it back and we will be making it bigger and better than last year. This year there will be a medieval twist, with new and improved lessons.

"Our Magic School is aimed at ages three to 14 ? but older kids and parents may just learn a spell or two too.
