Thanks Steve, the result was negative and I'm isolating at present as I'm having minor surgery at Abergele Hospital tomorrow.    Then on Friday I'm off to Glan Clwyd for a consultation on another matter
Can't say that I'm looking forward to tomorrow but will be glad when the op is done

Covid rates rise sharply in Wales due to new Omicron variants
There has also been an increase in the number of Covid cases in intensive care

Wales has seen a sharp rise in its Covid infection rate, which is likely to have been driven by the Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5, new data has revealed. The latest update from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that one in 30 people in Wales, around 3.35% of the population, had the virus during the week ending June 24.

That was a significant increase on the one in 45 reported just a week earlier. The Welsh Government said the rate of positive cases appears to be highest in the region covering Bridgend, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil. Some health boards have opted to reintroduce mask wearing and reduce visiting in hospitals due to the unwelcome rise in cases.

According to the ONS, across the UK a total of 2.3 million people in private households were estimated to have had the virus in the week ending June 24 - up 32% from 1.7 million the previous week. This is the highest estimate for total infections since late April, but is still some way below the record high of 4.9 million seen at the peak of the Omicron BA.2 wave at the end of March.

Two reports on the increase in Covid cases..........

As Covid-19 infections in the UK jump by more than half a million in a week, two new Omicron variants are being blamed.

Experts have said figures show the rise is likely driven by the latest variants BA.4 and BA.5.

A total of 2.3 million people in private households are estimated to have had the virus last week, up 32% from a week earlier, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

HEALTH bosses have warned that the coronavirus pandemic has not gone away, after cases in Wales have risen to their highest level since April.

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS)  released on Friday, July 1  show an estimated 3.49 per cent of the Welsh population is testing positive for Covid  or just under one in every 29 people in the seven days up to June 24.

This is a rise from previous week's figure of 2.25 per cent  or one in every 44 people in Wales.

The figures are now the highest they have been since the week up to April 30, where it was estimated that 4.33 per cent of people in Wales  or one in 23 people  were testing positive.

Covid is rising again in the UK - should we worry?

You'd be forgiven for letting out a weary sigh. There's so much going on from Ukraine to the rising cost of everything - and now Covid is rearing its ugly head again.

The latest statistics show the number of people infected in the UK has more than doubled since the start of June with around 2.3 million people testing positive. You probably know someone who's had it.

So is summer ruined? Two-and-a-half years into the pandemic we're back facing new variants, a surge in infections, questions about whether the NHS can cope and what it means for all our lives. It's also giving us a clearer idea of what living with Covid is going to look like.

Prof Danny Altmann, an immunologist at Imperial College London, says it's "shocking" how much the virus is able to change to keep on infecting us. He recalls seeing the first scientific analysis of Omicron last winter: "I felt like I'd just seen the worst horror film on the planet and yet it keeps throwing up worse ones".

The result is we're now entering another - arguably our third - Omicron wave of the year and it's only just July.

Fresh facemask advice issued by Wales' chief medical officer following Covid surge
Sir Frank Atherton said people should wear masks in crowded indoor places

Wales' chief medical officer said people should wear masks in crowded indoor places amid a surge in Covid cases. Sir Frank Atherton said people should continue to follow simple steps to protect themselves from the risk of catching the virus.

This also includes getting vaccinated, wearing masks, and taking a lateral flow test if you have symptoms. Sir Frank's comments come as coronavirus cases are once again increasing in Wales.

The latest ONS figures estimate one person in every 30 has Covid-19. Cases of the omicron subtypes BA.4 and BA.5 have increased across the UK, with BA.5 now the dominant form of coronavirus across Wales.

?You can still get the vaccine if you haven?t had your full course or you were too ill to get your spring booster." He added: "I would encourage parents to think about getting the vaccine for their children over the summer months to help minimise any disruption to their education during the autumn and winter terms.

He said people can stay safe by:           (Simple and effective)
Getting vaccinated
Maintaining good hand hygiene
Staying at home and limiting your contact with others if you are ill
Wearing a face covering in crowded indoor settings
Meeting others outdoors wherever possible
When indoors, increasing ventilation and letting fresh air in.

North Wales secondary school asks children to work from home due to Covid spike
Ysgol Aberconwy has told certain pupils to 'learn from home' at times this week due to staff illness

In a letter to parents, headteacher Ian Gerrard said the school was currently seeing the number of people unwell due to Covid-19 rising which is having an impact on staff and students at the school. As a result the school is taking additional measures to mitigate the impact of its reduced staffing levels.       ref DP

One in 20 now has Covid with top doctor warning when latest wave could peak
Dr Frank Atherton, the Chief Medical Officer for Wales, warned it could be particularly dangerous for those with waning immunity

He said the BA.5 variant of Omicron has overtaken BA.2 - which caused infection levels to reach an all-time high earlier in the year - as the most dominant strain. Scientists say BA.5 is around six times more infectious than the original Wuhan strain.

According to the latest weekly Covid infection survey from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), an estimated one in 20 people in Wales had the virus between June 24 and June 30 - up on the one in 30 reported the week before and way up on the one in 75 at the start of June. It means just shy of 150,000 people in Wales had the virus last week.

WALES is currently experiencing  ?a surge? of coronavirus infections, with around one in 20 people testing positive, according to new figures.

Chief medical officer for Wales, Sir Frank Atherton, warned that Wales was currently in ?a surge situation?, after the new Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5 were identified in Wales.

The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics ? published on Friday, July 8 ? show Wales has an estimated 4.93 per cent of the population testing positive for covid in the seven days up to June 29.

?Self-isolation is really the most important point. Anybody who has any symptoms or respiratory infection during this surge or indeed into the winter should really think about isolating themselves so they don?t pass the virus on to other people.

?Also, as we go into the winter months, everybody should consider those things that we?ve learned over the last two-and-a-half years that keep us safe and stop transmission.

?Maintaining social distancing, wearing face coverings when we?re in crowded public places and certainly wearing face coverings in health and social care settings, remain very, very important.?
