ALMOST 100 new coronavirus cases were reported across Wales today, latest figures show as restrictions ease further.

Public Health Wales confirmed on May 17 that 91 cases of Covd-19 were recorded across Wales - of which 20 were in the North.

• Anglesey – 0
Conwy – 3 (2.6 per 100,000 population)
• Denbighshire – 2 (2.1 per 100,000 population)

• Wrexham – 8 (5.9 per 100,000 population)

• Total confirmed COVID-19 cases from North Wales as of May 17 – 35,137

The Public Health Wales dashboard says that due to a lag in receiving data, cases sampled in recent days will not be fully reflected in these data, so the most recent incidence is likely to be an underestimate.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has reported 945 people have sadly died since the start of the pandemic, according to PHW data, with no daily increase.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics, which are considered a stronger indicator of the overall impact of the virus, and which are based on all deaths where COVID is mentioned on the death certificate, stand at 1,403 for the health board area.

The national picture:
Across Wales, 91 new cases were reported.
Sadly, one new death was reported bringing the total death toll to 5,560.

In terms of vaccination, data released on May 17 shows that a total of 2,027,803 people have had their first dose of the coronavirus vaccine and 917,431 have had their first dose.

One more person with Covid-19 has died in North Wales - one of three new virus-related deaths confirmed across the country on Friday (May 21).
The new death takes the death toll for the region to 946 since the start of the pandemic, while the national total is now 5,564.

It takes the total number of cases reported in the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board covering North Wales to 35,142 since the pandemic began.
Its rate remains at 2.9 per 100,000 population with the national average also unchanged at 9.5.

There have been 28 further cases of coronavirus across Wales, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 212,388.

It came as a health boss said there was "very high potential" for community transmission of the so-called Indian variant of coronavirus.
Dr Giri Shankar, from Public Health Wales, said it still remains to be seen whether the variant progresses to "established community transmission", but said it was likely.

He said that currently, they have been able to trace cases back to "credible" sources of where the infection had come from.
there were currently 28 cases of the "variant of concern", with 44 cases of all three Indian variants in total.
Several other cases are currently being investigated, so the number is "definitely expected" to increase, he said.

Public Health Wales figures released on Tuesday show that 29 new cases were confirmed in the region in the 48-hour period between 9am on May 28 and 9am on May 30.

Anglesey - 0
Conwy - 9
Denbighshire - 7
Flintshire - 3
Gwynedd - 3
Wrexham - 7

The latest cases come amid calls for vigilance after a cluster of cases of the Indian variant were last week confirmed in the Llandudno Junction, Llandudno and Penrhyn Bay areas of Conwy.

The cases are all linked, and no outbreak has currently been declared.

Richard Firth, consultant in Health Protection for Public Health Wales, and chair of the multi-agency Incident Management Team, said: “The emergence of cases of this transmissible new variant of coronavirus in the Llandudno Junction, Llandudno and Penrhyn Bay areas is a reminder that we should not become complacent, even as rates of the virus across Wales remain low.
