Battery warning issued after e-bike battery sparks North Wales house fire
Fire chiefs are urging people to check items with lithium batteries such as laptops or mobile phones

Fire service chiefs have issued a battery warning after an e-bike fire at a house in Old Colwyn, in Conwy, on Wednesday. Nobody was hurt, but people have been urged to check on any household items that may contain lithium ion batteries.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Crews were called to a fire in Old Colwyn on Wednesday night involving an e-bike battery. Thankfully, smoke alarms sounded and everyone in the house escaped unharmed. Remember to test your smoke alarms to make sure they are working, and close doors to prevent fire spread before heading up to bed.

Bangor: Neighbour burning rubbish sparks smoke warning
It's a bit early in the gardening season but I bet that there will be a few bonfires in the gardens in Llandudno  in the Summer.
We had a neighbour who lived in a dilapidated bungalow and he was forever lighting bonfires in his front garden.    One day there was a bonfire lit that Guy Fawkes would have been proud of but one of the neighbours must have been concerned about the danger of the fire and phoned the Fire Brigade.
With it's blue lights flashing and the siren going the fire engine raced to the property and promptly put the fire out.
I was told that the man had a good telling off and never lit a bonfire there again

Spate of fires in North Wales prompts urgent safety alert for everyone with a tumble dryer

Homeowners in North Wales have been urged to check their tumble dryers after a series of devastating fires. No one was hurt but properties suffered extensive damage.

A fire which badly damaged two houses started in a tumble dryer - the fourth such blaze in North Wales in a month, fire chiefs have revealed. Emergency crews rushed to the properties in Broughton yesterday (Saturday) morning in a huge 999 response.

No-one was hurt but the upper parts of both homes - which are linked - on Broughton Hall Road were fire damaged.

Fire Service Advice....
Keep your dryer well ventilated, make sure the vent pipe is kink free and not blocked or crushed in any way. Always clean out the filter after using your tumble dryer. Always allow each drying programme, including the 'cool down cycle', to complete fully before emptying the machine.

Tumble dryer review launched after homes across North Wales damaged in fires
Fire chiefs want to establish if there is 'any correlation' after a spate of blazes

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is now reviewing the fires, to see if there is "any correlation", although no trend has been established yet. Paul Kay, head of fire safety for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: ?A fire can be devastating for all involved - causing damage and disruption and in the worst cases, loss of life.

?We?re appealing to residents to follow some simple steps we should all be taking when using our tumble dryers to help everyone stay safe. Most importantly of all ? make sure you have a working smoke alarm and test it regularly ? we recommend once a week.

?You should also ensure you have an escape plan for you and your family should a fire occur ? and once you're out of the house, you should always stay out, and never go back in. No trend had been identified as yet with make / models - the most important thing is for all residents to follow our safety advice when using all tumble dryers.

Don't leave appliances unattended ? don't turn the tumble dryer on before you leave the house or go to bed. Tumble dryers contain powerful motors with fast moving parts that can get very hot. Keep your dryer well ventilated, make sure the vent pipe is kink free and not blocked or crushed in any way.

Firefighters battled blaze for hours in incident that closed main road through seaside town
Six fire engines attended the major fire in the centre of Colwyn Bay

Firefighters battled a blaze for hours in the centre of a seaside town. The North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were alerted shortly before 7pm yesterday evening to a fire in a building on Abergele Road in Colwyn Bay.

Police and firefighters attended the incident and the main road was closed to traffic. Six fire engines attended - including both engines from Colwyn Bay and Llandudno.

They were joined by the aerial ladder platform and an incident control unit. Fire crews used breathing apparatus, hose reels and a main line to tackle the blaze, supported by thermal imaging cameras.

They warned people to stay away from the area near the Pavilion pub as they fought the fire.

The crews spent more than five hours at the scene tackling the fire before the stop came in at just before midnight. There were no casualties.

Update

A spokesperson from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire caused severe heat and smoke damage to a room on the lower ground floor, smoke damage to the shop above and light smoke damage to an empty building alongside.

"The cause of the fire is thought to be electrical."

Air fryer sparks house blaze that sees firefighters called

Fire crews were called to the fire in Llandudno Junction yesterday evening

On arrival they found that the occupants had managed to tackle the air fryer blaze. They had used damp towels to extinguish the fire.

Crews helped to ventilate the property. No one was injured.

What are the safety rules for air fryers?
Always turn off the fryer at the socket when not in use. Never leave the fryer unattended. Don't overfill your fryer ? check the manufacturer's instructions but typically it should be no more than two-thirds full. Turn the handles away from the front of the cooker.

Never place your air-fryer on a tea towel or other soft, flammable surface as this is a fire hazard.

Re: Fire service news ........Bin lorry fires in Deganwy and Llandudno
« Reply #85 on: August 10, 2024, 10:08:09 am »
CONWY County Borough Council is urging residents not to put batteries in their bin, following two recent bin lorry fires in the area.

The recent incidents in Albert Drive, Deganwy and Bryn Marl, Llandudno involved quick thinking by the refuse crews when fires broke out in the back of the vehicles.

Crew members emptying bins spotted the fires taking hold and called North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters attended the scene promptly both times to put the fire out and followed the vehicle back to the waste depot.

The waste was unloaded and given further attention by the firefighters, as these kinds of fires often reignite.

The vehicles were out of action while safety checks were carried out, to make sure they were fit to go back on the road.

Lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly found in objects such as vapes, toys and electric toothbrushes, cause fires which are particularly difficult to tackle.

They have a tendency to keep reigniting and can lead to explosions and chemical exposure, creating a danger to the public, refuse workers and firefighters.

“Batteries can become crushed or damaged in bin lorries or waste sites and cause fires. Often they are lithium-ion batteries, hidden inside everyday objects,” said Cllr Geoff Stewart, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and the Environment.

“We offer a weekly battery recycling collection to residents, and our partners Crest collect small electrical items every fortnight.

Re: Fire service news and announcements Warning for anyone with lithium batterie

A fire that badly damaged a house in Flintshire is thought to have been caused by a mobility scooter left on charge. Fire chiefs have warned about the dangers of leaving electrical items charging overnight as fears over the use of lithium batteries intensify.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service (NWFRS) said the blaze highlighted the perils of charging items with lithium ion batteries overnight. As well as mobility vehicles, laptops, mobile phones, power tools, e-scooters and e-cigarettes have all been implicated in fires.
