RAF Valley march through Llandudno in Freedom parade

A PARADE travelled through Llandudno to mark the granting of the Honorary Freedom of the Town on the Royal Air Force Valley.

The honour had been granted by Llandudno Town Council.

The Freedom was granted in 1995 in recognition of the RAF Valley?s service to their country and this was the first parade held for a number of years.

The event, on Sunday, July 9, included a flypast by a Hawk aircraft over the Town Hall as the Parade formed up in Lloyd Street.

THREE massive Chinook helicopters will be operating from RAF Valley this summer.
The aircraft from 28 (Army Cooperation) Squadron, RAF Benson will be flying low over the region, including Eryri, during the period of July 24 to August 4.

It is to conduct essential training for crews during Exercise Kukri Dawn.

The exercise is the conclusion to the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) training conducted by 28 (AC) Squadron, ensuring that crews are tested in challenging and unfamiliar environments prior to deployment onto front line squadrons.

Mach Loop: Aircraft you can see from Red Arrows to F-15s
The Mach Loop is one of the best places in the UK to watch and photograph military aircraft in action.

The Mach Loop, located around Dolgellau, in mid-Wales, is one of three Tactical Training Areas (TTA) used by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for operational low-flying training by fast jets and Hercules transport aircraft.

Operational low flying is practised by fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters between 100 feet and 250 feet according to the MoD website meaning the high cliff faces around the Mach Loop give people an ideal vantage point to catch a glimpse of amazing aircraft doing their thing in scenic surroundings.

A ROYAL Naval ship was spotted sailing near to the Great Orme. ref pioneer

John Hume Snr spotted the boat on a misty Sunday morning (July 23) and shared the snap to the You know you are from LLandudno if

Residents were quick to identify it as HMS Tyne (P281).

John said: "I was on Marine drive on Sunday morning when I spotted a ship in the mist off Llandudno. I took a quick photo of it and then, using the zoom on my camera, I zoomed in on the ship to see if I could make out it's name. When I downloaded the shots I was able to clean up the photo and saw the letter and numbers on it's side which read P281.

HMS Tyne safeguards the UK?s fishing stocks. She is one of busiest vessels in the Royal Navy's Fleet and spends nine out of every 10 days of the year at sea.

North Wales' key role in helicopter pilot training

Huge low flying military helicopters have been spotted in north and mid Wales over the past week.

One enormous twin-rotor aircraft was even seen making an emergency landing in a field in Gwynedd - where it will have to be pulled out by a crane.

But why have giant RAF Chinook helicopters been seen in the skies?

It has been part of Operation Kukri Dawn, the final test for trainees who have spent the past three years learning how to fly what is the air force's aerial workhorse.

After spending a fortnight based at RAF Valley on Anglesey, the new pilots will now graduate - ready for action.

Huge cranes help move RAF Chinook which landed in field due to 'technical issues'
The military aircraft was flown out of the field on Friday

Huge cranes were brought in to help move an RAF Chinook helicopter forced to land in a North Wales field last week. The huge helicopter landed on a patch of land in the village of Arthog, near Fairbourne in Gwynedd on the evening of Thursday, July 28.

The 28 Squadron helicopter, normally based at RAF Benson in Wallingford, was flying out of RAF Valley on Anglesey as part of a training exercise when it experienced "technical issues," according to the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Engineers arrived on site to assess the problems on Friday.

Yesterday (Friday) after more activity around the aircraft, including two cranes brought in apparently assisting it onto mats, checks were performed, it was powered up and flew away from the scene, according to an eye-witness. The incident caused a flurry of excitement in the normally sleepy village - after some residents woke-up to find the gigantic Chinook parked-up just beyond their back gardens.

Camera Club member snaps Red Arrows and other jets at RAF Valley

Anglesey is a fantastic place for photographers.

There is its majestic scenery of course, but there is also a chance of catching the RAF's finest in your images.

Post-War Europe - A family member recently presented me with a set of what we both initially believed to be vintage travel guides. It was only when I sat down to examine them more closely that I realised that they were something completely different and definitely more interesting. We agreed that the booklets were about the right size to fit the breast pocket of a serviceman?s tunic.

When we lived up by Lynn geirionydd in the 80s, we had a big scare one very dark night, the noise was unbelievable, we phoned the police in the end, to be told, just :o  a Chinooks training exercise.................

CHINOOK helicopters will be flying low over north Wales during the course of the next month.
Three helicopters will be operating from Anglesey-based RAF Valley as of this week and up until November 16.

This is in order to conduct 'essential training' for crews during Exercise KUKRI DAWN and a few other serials.

Although most of the flying will be during Anglesey-based RAF Valley?s normal operating hours (9am to 5pm), there is expected to also be some night flying serials involved.
