Thanks very much for posting that article Robert 2020,  I found it very interesting and agree with your comments about using their own version of what is conservation.    If I criticise the CCBC it is not aimed at the staff who I believe the majority are very hard working, conscientious and work under sustained pressure.   It's the decision makers who have made so many costly mistakes in Llandudno.   As for the planning committee, from my recent experience with them I've come to the conclusion that they are not qualified to do that job and therefore not fit for purpose

If you look at the West Shore, the Penmorfa House was built for Dean Henry Liddell and completed on the 16th August 1862.     The Marine Drive and the Toll Houses were completed in 1878, 16 years later but yet there is a preservation order on the Toll House but not on the Penmorfa House.       The reason given by either Anwyl or the CCBC was that Penmorfa House was significantly altered over time!
As for the North Shore including the Pier Pavilion it's just one big mess that isn't going to go away.      I'm afraid that CCBC has not learnt anything from its past mistakes

Just thought that I'd mention something that locals my age would have seen and that is in the second photo.   On the left opposite the Toll house is an arched structure and that is where the pedestrians used to walk through.  The pedestrians had to pay a toll for walking on the Marine Drive and I think that it may have been 1p in the old currency.     .
The toll for pedestrians was abolished in 1930 when the Urban Council bought the Marine Drive for 10,500, pounds
I can't remember the year, but the pedestrian Toll building was demolished on the grounds that it was difficult for lorries to drive between the two buildings

have a look at the sales leaflet for the site..... I hope the council have some guts to say what should be built on that land cause it will stand there for many years.

Legat Owen are the agents and the brochure can be viewed on their site.

Thanks very much Robert2020 for posting that information.     I've had a look at the site for Legat Owen and can only describe it as rubbish.

Firstly, yes planning was granted in 2008 for building 28 apartments and the first attached photo shows an artists impression of those 28 flats and I must say how attractive and keeping up with the appearance of the area they were.
So if Anwyl applied for permission to build those apartments why did they not build them once planning was granted?
My understanding is that in 2013 the planning application had expired as no work had been done on the site

Many years later Anwyl touted a plan to build about 54 apartments that resembled something from Legoland but they never actually applied for planning application then.  The architect was from Chester but I  can't remember the firms name.

In recent years following some criticising Anwyl promised to submit plans for an apartment block on the site and the plans would be submitted to CCBC by the Summer.    This never happened !
Anwyl then announced some time later that it was not viable for them to build "bespoke" apartments on the site.     I've no idea of what they mean by that remark as they are old established builders and have been building apartments all over the UK, apart from Llandudno that is.      As for CCBC,   they have had 16 years to do something and like the old Pier Pavilion they have chosen to do nothing so I don't have any faith in what will happen next

Warning over dangerous spikes found in sand at popular beach in Wales
They are a danger to people including children and those with horses or dogs and harbour staff have urged people to report any sightings of the objects so they can be removed

A Welsh council has issued a warning following reports of dangerous metal spikes scattered along a popular beach. They were found at Penmaenmawr, in Conwy - one of north Wales' most popular beaches.

Harbour staff from the local authority have been working to clear the spikes. They have been discarded by fishermen using them to anchor nets

If you find any spikes on Penmaenmawr beach, contact the Harbour team immediately on 01492 596253, or email harbour@conwy.gov.uk.

Re: Stop Press...More than £200k spent on Craig-y-Don paddling pool refurb
« Reply #1985 on: July 12, 2024, 10:05:18 am »
Update on my recent pool costs post.........

AN EYE-OPENING amount of money has been spent on the refurbishment of Craig-y-Don paddling pool, as the site edges closer to opening.

The pool was finally filled this week, after the local authority came under heavy criticism last year after revealing that the paddling pools would not re-open that summer.

This was due to a high risk of people slipping, with pendulum 'slip tests' carried out on the paddling pools in January 2023 and subsequent reports received in February 2023.

Despite the paddling pools in Rhos-on-Sea, Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr reopening almost two months ago, no opening date has been earmarked for the Craig-y-Don pool.

According to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request, the cost of the refurbishment up to this point is £231,604, the majority of which the council said had been covered by external grants.

The refurbishment included base slab repairs, a fresh full non-slip coating, and the replacement of expansion joints.

A further £26,000 was spent refurbishing the steps.

The council added that the final valuation might rise.

In a response to the FOI, a Conwy County Borough Council spokesperson said: "The cost of the work to refurbish the pool is £231,604, which has included base slab repairs, replacement expansion joints, backflow mitigations, removal of finishes and full non-slip coating replacement.

"We are waiting for the final valuation which may include some additional costs.  Whilst the work has been ongoing, we have taken advantage of the closure to refurbish the steps which cost £26,000.

"The majority of the refurbishment and step costs have been covered through external grants."        ref pioneer

Fake £20 notes that look 'very realistic' being used on Wales's longest high street warn police
North Wales Police said fraudsters are targeting businesses in Bangor city centre with counterfeit Scottish notes

Police have issued a warning after spate of incidents involving fake £20 notes on a North Wales high street. Officers said that the fraudsters were using counterfeit Scottish notes with shopkeepers.

They said they had passed checks at store and staff members and owners could not be "blamed for falling foul of the fraudster’s deceit". The notes were marked as from the Clydesdale Bank - which does issue legal tender in the UK - and the police said the notes were "very realistic".

Re: Stop Press..........Signs of life on Sycamore Gap tree stump
« Reply #1987 on: August 01, 2024, 10:33:27 am »
Signs of life have been found growing from the stump of the felled Sycamore Gap tree.

Eight new shoots have emerged from the base, giving hope the historic tree lives on ten months after it was cut down.

The tree stood in a dip in Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland and, when it was attacked with a chainsaw in September last year, there was a national outcry.

The National Trust and Northumberland National Park Authority hope the shoots could develop significant growth to form new trees around the stump.

There has been a lot of thinning out of trees and shrubs at Bodnant, and it is surprising how quickly new growth appears,  For those that have visited and seen the removal of much of the shrubs can come back next year and see the result!

Update............

Sycamore Gap tree trunk section back home a year on

One year after the famous Sycamore Gap tree was cut down a 7ft (2m) section of the trunk has returned home.

The piece is now the star-attraction in a new exhibition at The Sill visitor centre near Hexham, in Northumberland, which celebrates the life of the tree.

As part of the project, visitors will be asked to make pledges about how they can help protect the environment.

The National Trust has also launched an opportunity for people to request one of 49 Sycamore Gap saplings to be gifted to their communities around the UK, reflecting the 49ft (15m) height of the tree.

The tree, which was a much-loved subject for artists and photographers, was illegally felled exactly one year ago.

Don't forget the clocks go back this Sunday
Most people dread the arrival of the dark nights at this time of year.
But who doesn't love getting an extra hour in bed as a result?

Royal Mail shares last posting dates for mail Christmas 2024
I should imagine that with the increased cost of postage stamps there will be a lot less Christmas cards posted this year       We cut down on the number of cards posted last year and instead made a donation to a charity and I know of a few people who do the same

When and how Dwr Cymru will compensate customers hit by Conwy water main burst
Homes have been without water for days

Dwr Cymru said: "To recognise the inconvenience being experienced by customers whose supplies have disrupted, each eligible household will be paid £30 in compensation for every 12 hours their supplies have been affected."

This will automatically be paid to customers in their bank accounts. This should be within 20 days.

Cheques will be issued over the coming weeks to customers who do not have registered a bank account with them.

People have been warned to beware of scammers claiming to be from Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water asking for bank details to enable payments.

Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water will be paying each business affected by the “burst water” compensation of £75 for every 12 hours their supplies were affected.
