The A470 was closed near Llanrwst late this afternoon due to a serious crash. All traffic was being sent along the B5106. Not sure if it has been cleared yet.

They've just spent a fortune on that stretch of road to make it safer, haven't they?

They have.  Two people were killed in the incident.

Trouble is, you- can spend all you like to make roads safer, but you can never legislate adequately for bad driving.   That road is particularly bad in that respect. In the main, two types of driver use that road: the first is the business driver, who needs to use the road to get from Llanrwst or Betws to the coast.  The road has a national speed limit, so 60mph is the speed most of them would like to use, but they're often thwarted by the second type of driver: the elderly, non-working driver who has no where to go quickly and thinks everyone rushes about too much.

In fact, a little more thought on the part of both these types of driver, and the road would probably be a much safer place.

I've said before that I've seen some appalling driving on that road. It's usually the idiot who is late and tries to overtake several cars at once, even with a blind corner ahead - why would anyone be so stupid as to do something like that?

The road, of course, is for everyone's use and not everyone wants to drive at 60mph. One of the biggest problems (which is being addressed as the various improvements are carried out) is the width of the road - it's far too narrow in most places. So, when you have two cars (one overtaking) coming in one direction and two cars (one overtaking) coming the other way, there is simply not enough room and the crash occurs. The new sections of road are far wider.

by Kelly Barker, DPW West May 4 2011

YOBS ripped a lifeboat collection box from its stand before smashing it open and making off with around £150 worth of donations.

Two lads from Oldham were convicted of this offence, together with stealing from Stalls at the Extravaganza.

That's true, but I'd make two points: there is a much more leisurely drive to be had down the road on the opposite side of the valley, with nicer views, too.  The A470 is primarily a trunk road, so one would expect the majority to use it as such.  I think the other aspect has to be the thoughtfulness. The driver who wants to poodle along at 35, on a perfectly straight and clear road, surely has to have some consideration for the bloke who's trying to make a living and has to be getting places? As you point out, the 470 isn't wide enough to pass at speed for much of its length, so if they were to pull over and just let the other driver pass occasionally, it would be better for everyone. Likewise, aggressive and dangerous overtaking and boot-hogging is equally dangerous and needs to be curtailed.

...and Police want to 'urgently interview' the driver of a Red Vauxhall seen speeding off to Lanrwst at about the time of the incident.

The local man that passed away on Saturday was David Lesley Crapper known to everyone in Eglwysbach and further as Les Minafon. He was a well loved local character who was involved in a lot of events in the area, especially the Eglwysbach Show. He was the type of person that once you met him, you never forgot him.

The owner of the motor yacht that berthed at Caernarfon recently is Mr Reg Advocaat, CEO of the Fortunate Sun Mining (gold) Company.

He has been in the area for a meeting with the Clogau Gold Co, with regard to possible business dealings with them.
