Lisa Burton
« on: April 15, 2016, 12:57:05 pm »
I wondered whether anyone had information on Lisa Burton who lived in Llandudno all her life. She died at Christmas 1999, aged 104. I think her proper christian name was Eliza.

She lived in Lime Grove on the lower slopes of the Great Orme this was the last address I knew for her. When she became frail and unable to look after herself, she went into Plas Gogarth Nursing Home on Church Walks.

I know she was married to possibly Thomas Burton. He died long before her and I don't know much about him. They had one son, Thomas, and I think he died not long after Lisa. He attended her funeral and was aged about 78 then.

I would like to know about her history. I don't know her maiden name, or anything of her family prior to marriage.

Lisa attended the school on Church Walks and was the last surviving pupil of this. She was a very active member of The Mother's Union in Trinity Church.

Does anyone remember Lisa and have any more information on her please?

Helig

Helig,  I'm afraid that I don't know anything about "Lisa" but if she is locally born and bred  then there should be other members of the forum who may know some info.
I believe that Burton is a popular surname in Lancashire and my Nain's maiden name was Burton.  Although she was born in Amlwch her father was English and born in Liverpool but as far as I am aware they were not related to Thomas.
I do not subscribe to Ancestry etc but someone who does may be able to trace the marriage of Thomas and "Lisa"      I have a friend who would be able to do that but at the moment he is away in sunny climes.
I might be wrong but as "Lisa" was born in the 1890's then that may not be her correct name but the marriage details will show the correct name.
Conwy Archives has a lot of info there that may help with your search

Have a look at this web site http://llandudno-parish.org.uk/wordpress/extra/the-great-war/b/burton-george-frederick
It gives details of a George Frederick Burton b.1895 in Burton, Derbyshire, the son of Frederick Samuel and Eliza Burton. On the 1911 Wales census the family are living at 3 Bryn Gwynt Terrace, Great Orme.
Frederick Samuel and Eliza Burton may be connected to your Eliza Burtons husband Thomas

I remember a little about 'Eliza' Burton at Holy Trinity and her long connection with the Mothers' Union. I will try this weekend to find out more.

Eliza Jones was born in Llandudno 5/2/1896.
On the National Schools Admission Register it states she attended St George's Infants School, Llandudno date of admission 18/4/1899, living at 2 Lime Grove, Llandudno Father Peter Jones. She is again registered at the Great Orme Infants School from 5/9/1904 to 15/8/1905 when she leaves to attend the Board School living at 6 Cyll Terrace.
On the 1911 Census Eliza a Drapers Assistant is living with her Widowed Grandmother Elizabeth Edwards who was born 1839 Amlwch, her Occupation is Boarding House Keeper at Bro Dawel, Ty Gwyn Road, Llandudno.
Eliza marries Sydney Burton on 30/11/1921 in Llandudno. Sydney's father is Deceased and was Fred Samuel Burton, French polisher. Sydney's Occupation is a Labourer and address 8 St Beuno's Road, Llandudno.
Eliza's address Bro Dawel, Tan Yr Og, Road, Llandudno, Father Peter Jones, Occupation Council Worker. Witnesses Walter Burton & Sarah Ann Evans. They were married by R W Lloyd Jones Assistant Curate.
I'm sorry if some of the addresses don't appear to be the right spelling, but I have copied what is written. I will continue a search to see what else I can find for Eliza & Sydney.

Kind Regards,
Meleri

On the 1939 Register Sydney & Eliza were living at 6 Lime Grove, Tan Yr Og Terrace, Llandudno. Sydney's Occupation was a Steam Engine Driver and his date of birth 22/3/1899.
The National School Register has Sydney attending St George's National School (mixed) Address 3 Bryn Gwynt Terrace, Llandudno, Father Fred Burton. Date for leaving that school 25/7/1913.

1911 Census Sydney born 1899 Dalton, Lancashire is living at 3 Bryn Gwynt Terrace with his parents Fred Samuel Burton born 1857, Occupation French Polisher & Upholsterer & Eliza Burton born 1869 Banbury, Cheshire. Also 2 brothers George Fred born 1899 Buxton, Derbyshire & Walter born  1902 Liverpool.

I can't find their son Thomas but there is Ronald Fredrick Burton Born 14/4/1923 Mother's maiden name Jones registered in Conway and he died 2000 in Aberconwy could he be their son?

Going back to Eliza's family on the 1881 Census her Grandparents are living at Bryn Hyfryd, Llandudno as we know Elizabeth Edwards was born in Amlwch and her husband William Edwards was born 1844 Llanrwst and was a General Labourer. They have 2 children Elizabeth A Edwards born 1864 Llandudno Occupation General Domestic Servant and Richard W Edwards born 1881 Llandudno.
On the 1891 Census Elizabeth a Widow is living at Bro Dawel, Ty Gwyn Road, Llandudno and her father Richard Thomas Widower born 1809 Amlwch, Occupation Labourer Scavenger. Also daughter Margaret Jane Thomas born 1862 Occupation Domestic servant.

Meleri,  that was a really great find of yours and I'm sure that it will help Helig a lot.   It certainly gives a very good start in tracing Eliza's side of the family.       $good$

As a result of your findings I was able to go to the Archives today and confirm that the Ronald Frederick Burton you found, born on 14/4/1923 was in fact the son of Sydney and Eliza Burton.
The Llandudno Baptism record shows the following info:-
No 321  on  May 20th 1923    Ronald Frederick Burton  son to Sydney and Eliza Burton of 3 St Beuno's Road Great Orme Llandudno  Sydney's occupation  Labourer and the Assistant Curator R W Lloyd Jones performed the service

There were no other Baptism records for them for any other children ( I checked to 1930)

There was an entry in there for a Walter Burton who was a witness at the marriage of Sydney and Eliza and the details are:-
No 490   7th Feb 1925     George Frederick Burton (4 and a half years old)   to Walter and Beatrice Burton  occupation Hairdresser  at  8 St Beuno's Road Great Orme Llandudno   Mr Watkin Davies rector conducted the service.
It would appear that Sydney and Walter were related in some way and lived in the same road too.

Another entry to appear in the Baptism record was ;-
No 465  18th October 1925 Thelma Jessie Fanny Burton to Charles Edward and Margaret Burton of 2 Llican Terrace Great Orme Llandudno occupation Labourer and the service was performed by L G Swan  Bangor

There were a few Burton's in Llandudno and they all lived on the Great Orme and very close to each other

While I was at the Archives I looked at the Burial Records for Sydney and Eliza Burton but there was no record of them at St Tudno's Church or at St Hilary's in Llanrhos.   I suspect that they are buried in the Council owned Cemetery at St Tudno's.
There was a grave at St Hilary's Llanrhos that had four members of the Burton family buried there at Plot J 069.
They were J M C Burton.  Frederick John Burton,  Eliza Burton and Joseph Burton.
Joseph Burton died  on Dec 3rd 1904 and the others in the 1800's

Thank you very much, Meleri and Hugo, this is the right family and solves the puzzle over Lisa's ancestors.

I apologise for having become muddled over some of their names.

I knew Lisa from c1965 up to 1999, having visited her not long before she died. Lisa was a very close friend of my grandmother. She would call on her every week to catch up on local gossip. They always met up on a Saturday morning for coffee at Sumner's. They also went Old Tyme dancing on a Tuesday evening in Payne's.

Lisa was a formidable lady and very kind to a few people who were in need of help.

I could say more but perhaps better to leave some of the details here!

Thanks again.

Helig.

If my memory serves me right, I think she opened the new school (Ysgol San Sior) together with the Bishop of Bangor.
