Re: Rescue Services...RNLI Safety warning ahead of large spring tides
« Reply #480 on: March 30, 2024, 10:06:47 am »
People visiting the coast this Easter weekend are being urged to be cautious due to an increased risk of becoming cut off by large spring tides.

The warning comes as new figures show a rise of about 15% in tidal cut off rescues.

The RNLI is warning people of the dangers of the tides that coincide with the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

Tide times and heights vary throughout the month and can easily leave people stranded and needing help.

"When it comes to tides even a short miscalculation can make a big difference, especially when there are bigger than usual tides," said Jason Dunlop, Penarth RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager.

Dog plunges down deep ravine at popular Snowdonia waterfall
Luckily for the hapless mutt, help was on hand from a mountain rescue team

More call-outs are expected over the Easter break. You can donate directly to the team?s volunteers, who are prepared to go out in all weathers seven days a week, year-round OVWRO?s fundraising page is here.
It might be a good idea if the people who are rescued are advised about the fund raising and given a leaflet to let them know how to make a donation to the OVWRO

Astonishment at what 'muppets' wear when flocking to Snowdon in all weathers
Trainers, sandals, flip flops, shorts - and not just in summer

Accidents waiting to happen?  I do like this idea though   "In exasperation, some climbers in Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) have taken it upon themselves to turn people back. It?s been attempted on Yr Wyddfa too. One man said: ?I went last year in full winter conditions. I had to make people go down who hadn?t the appropriate footwear and clothing. Unbelievable. I avoid Snowdon now like the plague. Full of idiots.?

When we lived up by the lake, we could see the kagool and trainer brigade heading up to Llyn Crafnant, not a mountain, but above the snow line, they found out the hard way, that they should have checked the weather forecast before setting off, and as above should have been better prepared, the worst case we experienced...... two children separated from a larger group, fortunately they found our house and we were in, it took awhile to warm them up, very lucky indeed.

A 10-metre yacht on its way to Conwy found itself stranded.

This happened on Friday, April 5. Llandudno Lifeboat were called out to help.

A statement from RNLI Llandudno Lifeboat said: "Llandudno volunteers crewing the all-weather relief Shannon class lifeboat John Metters launched at 6.15pm on Friday evening to locate and assist a stranded 10-metre yacht on route to Conwy.

"The yacht was taken to the safety of Conwy Marina and our crew was then able to return to Llandudno Lifeboat Station at 9.20pm."

Dog struggling in Great Orme cove's waters saved by RNLI
The dog got into difficulties near Pigeon's Cove

A happy ending thank goodness and another great rescue by the RNLI.        I just hope that the owner had to walk back to town after that preventable incident.   Why was the dog off the lead in the first place as there are Seals on the beach and livestock on the grassy slopes?

A RESCUE operation involving a man stranded on his yacht with his brother and grandchildren in Rhyl was shown as part of a BBC programme last night (April 23).

Members of Rhyl?s Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) crew featured on yesterday?s episode of Saving Lives at Sea.

The Rhyl segment focused on an incident during a rainy evening last year, when skipper Brian came into difficulty on the ?infamously rough? Irish Sea.

An emergency Coastguard call had been made reporting that his yacht had lost engine power while caught in the storm offshore.
