Brilliant postcard and picture.... finally NOW I can see way passengers used to go through that canopy, down those stairs and on the the steamships.

You have told me before, but I can really picture those halcyon days now.

I remember going down those stairs to embark the Isle of Man steam ships.

What year would that have been?

Interesting. I always thought those steps were removed when they rebuilt the Landing Stage in 1969 but maybe it was later. The walkway bit is till there under the Pavilion.

My favorite Isle of Man Steam Packet vessel, King Orry at the pier head, showing the pre-1969 landing stage:

Looking of those pictures reminds me...didn't the Pier Manager (or Piermaster I think he was called), along with his staff, all wear naval uniforms at one time?

That's right. Betty Astell (second on the bill) was his wife.

A Valentines postcard showing a bathchair being pushed along the pier:

This type of chair on wheels was devised by James Heath of Bath in around 1750 and for the next 75 years it rivalled the sedan chair in its popularity. It was mainly intended for use by invalids or elderly people. The example below is of the commonest variety with two wheels joined by an axle beneath the seat, with a small pivoting wheel in front supporting it. The chair could be pushed from behind and steered by the long rod connected to the front wheels and controlled by the occupant. The whole chair was designed with flowing lines. The bath chair was especially popular in Victorian times and used at seaside resorts. Some bath chairs had sliding hoods to protect the traveller from wind and rain.
