May Day celebrations were generally held in the Happy Valley. However, during inclement weather, the festivities were moved indoors into the pier pavilion.

This postcard circa 1907, shows dancing around the maypole, to a packed pavilion audience.

The Montserrat sign advertised a Lime fruit juice cordial that was popular at the time, apparently. Seems an odd place for a big advert, as it is largely blocked by the Baths Hotel.

Ah, "Fill me a tankard"  $drink$

What shall I drink?

"We counsel the public (especially in summer) to drink Montserrat in preference to any form of alcohol"  :-X

What's always puzzled me is how few photos/postcards there are of the interior of the Pavilion, apart from a few early ones. I've never seen any from about the 1920s onwards but surely there must have been many taken? Where are they all?  ?{}?

This is a photo I took back in about 1990 of a fire being tackled in the Grand Hotel, notably mainly for the view it offers of the sadly neglected Pavilion at that time:

I have always wondered, given the intensity of the 1994 fire ...(as described by Trojan) .. how come The Grand itself didn't go up in flames too?

Must have been a terribly nerve wracking time ... and I reckon many locals will have felt very sick in the following days...

Only one thing saved the Grand...the wind was blowing the other way. That's why the windows in the hotels on Happy Valley Road exploded with the heat but the Grand was unscathed.

Some more photos from 1989, when the Pier was hosting the ITV Telethon:

This postcard of the Pierhead is interesting as it shows the original Bandstand (still present today) but without the Pavilion (now the amusement arcade) which was added later.

[smg id=1113]

How it looks today, you can clearly see the original Bandstand to the right and the Pavilion extension to the left:

Brilliant postcard and picture.... finally NOW I can see way passengers used to go through that canopy, down those stairs and on the the steamships.

You have told me before, but I can really picture those halcyon days now.
