One big problem is that Shakespeare is tough for amateur or smallish companies to perform.   To deliver the lines so that they make sense to an audience used to modern enunciation, cadence and usage isn't easy, which is why we have companies like the RSC, who tend to do it rather well. Seeing and hearing it done poorly can put kids off Shakespeare for life.

Sometimes the people in a position to put this in place aren't motivated to do it, through either ignorance or elitism, for instance when the management of Theatre Clwyd got rid of the various community groups using the facitilies.

Trouble with Shakespeare is making sense of the words. It always seems to make more sense if you are reading it than just hearing it. In the past I have noticed that 'Shakespeare Buffs' seem to take the 'script' along and read with the play.
Having been made to learn large chunks of it as a school girl I'm sure I really didn't know what I was spouting about! :o

True, but some plays are easier than others in that respect.  Midsummer Night's Dream, Merchant of Venice, The Play that Can't be Named, R & J, Tempest.  And if you're at all into poetry, they're quite fascinating.

I must confess to having played Bottom in Midsummer Night's Dream.  I particularly enjoyed the Play within a Play and the exchange twixt Pyramus and Thisby!!!     D)

Bottom has to be one of the best ever characters to play and watch, I would have liked to see your Bottom so to speak Yorkie! :roll:

I had a minor role with an Am Dram group that took a cut down version of MND to the National final of a one act drama competition, only to be told by a "southern lovey" judge that Shakespeare delivered in a "Northern accent" was quaint but not worthy of winning the competition. I'm not bitter ! it was only 25 years or so ago.
