My laptop won't boot up. When I switch on the hard drive spins for a few seconds as if it's booting but then it stops.

Anyone got any suggestions please?

Drink the wine & vodka you normally 'save for guests'.

Hmmm...does anything at all appear on the screen? Does the power light remain on?

Is it on battery power or mains when this happens? If it's battery try it again with it plugged in to the mains.

When a laptop is powered on it initially does a POST (Power On Self Test) each test is associated with a beep and the number of beeps shows how far through the test the laptop has got before it fails. In short are you getting any beeps when you power it on?

Already done that Trojan but it didn't help!

I tried it whilst it was on mains power and it worked. Seems a bit odd though because the battery was fully charged!

Thanks for your help folks.

Could be a problem with the power? or it could be a virus I spoke to someone yesterday and he had the same problem he switch his laptop on got to the sign in screen and it shut down. He did have a virus which he got cleaned might be worth taking it some where?

I want to buy an ipad type device for a birthday present but can't afford the "real thing"

I've looked online and there appear to be  several devices that would fit the bill between £100- £200, can anyone recommend  anything in particular [""}

You wont find anything anywhere near as good as an ipad in that price bracket
but the A1CS 10.2 Android 2.1 Tablet PC @ £160 gets good reviews.

I find Fire Fox is about the best, not least because they're so rigorous in installing patches and upgrades .
