Perhaps if they let them join a trade union it would cheer them up.

If the workers wish to join a Trade Union there is nothing to stop them.   :D

Perhaps he should have said a Trade Union that Aldi are prepared to recognise!

If the workers wish they can form themselves into a " negotiating group" in order to settle any problems or disputes with the management.  It is not absolutely necessary to be a member of an "official or recognised" union.  There is plenty of legislation that is supportive of the workers.  ;)

Can I have those rose-tinted glasses when you've finished with them?

Not rose tinted glasses - just over 50 years of experience.   I am still available for consultation, if of course, you can afford my fees!   L0L

Yorkie, Aldi is cheap because it is "no frills". If you want customer service go to M&S and pay for it.

Since when was customer service a 'frill'? if you're unable to service customers to a satisfactory level you should not be in the retail industry. Same with the mardy A*** faces off a lot of bar staff in Llandudno - who often don't even make eye contact as they shove over the drinks you've normally paid a near extortionate amount for.

Manners and politeness costs nothing and in this climate being out of a job costs an awful lot, some people should count their blessings as well as counting the cash.

In this day and age, and I'm generalising,... you only receive friendly customer service from someone who is running their own business.   i.e, they care enough to make sure you come back again!

If you pay teenagers the minimum wage to work in a faceless organisation with few prospects, then (generally) you get poor service.

Now, I'm not saying that is the right way to be, I'm just saying that its human nature, or it SEEMS to be these days.
I've seen it, even within my own family.

I remember starting out in the world of work, and it was important to make a good impression to make sure you could be in the best position for any career progression.
But, (in general, with a few notable exceptions) you just don't see that attitude so much these days.

You do in America, people take the professions such as bar person and waitress seriously and are proud to make a career out of them.

I suspect that's more to do with the fact that most of the money made over there is in tips;  bar staff are paid only a very basic wage and have to make a lot in tips simply to make ends meet.

I think you can largely put good service down to the way the staff are trained.
Take Asda for example, a huge business but the staff are in general trained to be helpful and friendly.
Admittedly I only have experience of the Llandudno and Queensferry branches but their customer service puts M&S to shame.

I was always taught that one should be polite to one's customers - "no frills" does not mean treat the client like sh*te.  In fact many companies have grown with a "no frills" service but have still respected their clientèle.  Argos offers such a service but you rarely, if ever, hear a complaint about customer service.

Actually, sometimes at M & S's counters and tills one can be met with poor or mediocre service!  Just look at their progress (or decline) over the past few years.

p.s.  Go into any Jewish owned shop in Oxford Street (or anywhere in London) and you will see what customer service is all about!  Shalom!  ZXZ
