Military Record Edward OWEN bn 1892
« on: May 31, 2013, 02:30:29 am »
I've found the above record and was wondering if anyone can tell the address of the listed father W H OWEN.  It states it's off Church Walks.  I think W H OWEN was in fact Edward's half brother not his father.  Does anyone know if it was usual to list a brother if the father had died.  His mother is correct by my reckoning including the address.  Edward was the son of John OWEN (who died 1895) and his second wife Laura (Roberts).  His brother William Hugh bn 1877 was the son of John and his first wife Margaret (JONES)

I can't read it properly but it looks like Llwyn Onn Cottages which I think are up Old Road and on the left before Ty Gwyn Road crosses over it.
Someone from the Great Orme would know for sure.

The Street Indexes 1911, 1914 or 1922 in the Conwy Archives will have the details of the head of the family.   It could even be in your 1929 Street Index Suepp.

I had looked in there, Hugo, but no clues as to the address, could not see anything in the alphabetical indexes either, although there are plenty of E and W Owens' !
The  references to roads "off" Church walks are Promenade, Mostyn Street, Tudno Street, Old Road, Abbey Road, Bodlondeb Hill, and Ty Gwyn Road.
Ty Gwyn Road has several integral terraces, such as Llican Terrace,  Belle Vue Terrace and Tan yr Ogo.

Have you tried the 1911 census? I can have a look if you don't have access

I'm hoping to go to the Archives on Monday after taking my car in for its MOT ( that's if I'm not too upset afterwards    :'(  )
I can have a look then unless you can access it before then.

Thanks Jom, it still looks like Llwynonn Cottages to me but I'll check with the Archives on it.

Thanks Hugo.  I felt the second word was something like "Gatteys"

I had a look at the 1911 Street Index at the Archives and Llwynonn Terrace is where I thought it was.  There are  only four houses in the terrace and none of the occupiers were called Owen.
However, when I looked at Llwynonn Gardens there were several houses there and at No 6 was listed William Owen and his source of income was given as Apartments.
Could this be your relative?    The terraced 3 storey properties are behind the Kings Head pub

In  1911 Llwynonn Road had not been built so there were only these two terraces with the name Llwynonn in them.

No 6 is the first white building on the left in the first photo and next to the end of the terrace

When was the street index as I can't find him there in the census.  Was he with his wife Catherine by any chance?

The Street index was for 1911 but I don't know when it was compiled in that year.    The Index only lists one person on it and that person listed is normally the breadwinner.
Llwynonn Gardens is very near Church Walks, possibly about 50 yards away so that's possibly why it was described as near Church Walks.
Sorry but I can't help you regarding Catherine.

Thanks Hugo.  You've been great AGAIN.  As previously mentioned I have him, I think, as living in Lloyd Street in 1911 with wife Catherine nee BARNES.  he was noted as a lodger to Catherine ROWLANDS.  There also was one Florence BARNES, niece to the Catherine ROWLANDS.  It may be of course, that Catherine (BARNES) OWEN was also a niece.  William was listed as a pier labourer.  his age was 32 which doesn't quite compute with being born 1877 but I'm fairly sure this is my William Hugh.  I shall have to get his marriage cert, I think

I was very remiss previously and had meant to thank you for the wonderful photos attached.  I am as always most grateful.  helps complete a mental picture.

Cheers

Jo
