"Dear resident,

I am writing to update regarding Conwy County Borough Council's plan to introduce a one-way system along part of Rhos-on-Sea Promenade.

Yesterday the council's Planning Committee granted planning permission to the coastal defence improvements plans but the one-way system element of the proposals is subject to a statutory Traffic Regulation Order, which requires further public consultation.

Any person may object to a Traffic Regulation Order and the local authority is obliged to consider objections before deciding whether or not to proceed so the battle is not over yet!

The Traffic Regulation Order will be advertised on the council’s website in due course. Notices will also be published in the local press and a hard copy will be posted on the promenade giving 28 calendar days for objections to be made.

I will issue a further update as soon as the order is advertised but in the meantime please encourage as many people as possible to back our campaign by signing the petition here:

www.darrenmillar.wales/scrap-one-way-plans-rhos-sea-promenade    darrenmillar.wales/scrap-one-way-plans-rhos-sea-promenade

I trust that this update is helpful."

THE METHODIST Church in Rhos-on-Sea is to close after nearly 100 years, with its buildings to be sold.

Community groups which use the church ancillary buildings for a variety of meetings and rehearsals have been told they will have to find new premises by the end of August, as church authorities prepare the building for closure.

A spokesperson for the church said: “We are closing the church buildings because our congregation has grown older and smaller in number, down to about 40 now, and we can no longer handle the workload of managing the building as there only a few of us who are involved in looking after it.

Parking charges along Colwyn Bay's promenade are set to rocket to £3.70 for a minimum four hours from next month. The hike will come into force from May 9.

Conwy Council says the move will bring the charges "into line with other areas". During the summer months (May to September) the minimum charge will be £3.70 for up to four hours. At the moment, beachgoers can park for one hour for 50p, two hours for £1, four hours for £2.50 or over four hours for £3.50.

Parking will still be free before 10am and after 4pm. A post on the council's Facebook page states: "If you’re a local resident and use the promenade regularly during the day, you can buy a year’s permit for £60 (which works out to 16.5p a day)."

WORK will begin on improvements to Rhos-on-Sea’s coastal defences and promenade from May, Conwy County Borough Council has announced.

The scheme involves building a new rock groyne and importing approximately one million tonnes of sand in front of the existing seawall to improve coastal defences.

A tonne of sand is being moved to strengthen sea defences at a popular beach.

The £14m project in Rhos on Sea in Conwy county will involve using a big pipe to shift the sand, and building a new rock barrier to stop the sand drifting across the beach.

The town's West Promenade will also be widened for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as play areas, and gardens.

Conwy council has said the the work will take a year.

A 1km (3,200 ft) pipe will be built on the beach west of Colwyn Bay pier to move the sand, which will mean an area of the beach will be closed.

A council spokesperson said: "These sea defences are vital to protect Rhos on Sea in the future."

COASTAL defence work will begin on Rhos-on-Sea’s West Promenade on May 23, Conwy County Borough Council has announced.

West Promenade will be closed to traffic, with a diversion via Cayley Embankment.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use a temporary route along the bottom of the embankment, with pedestrian access to the seaside kiosks.

Overwintering birds cause Conwy to rethink coastal defence plans at Rhos on Sea
Council applies for change in planning permission

But Conwy has applied to its own planning committee, seeking permission to relax a condition designed to prevent the siltation of Rhos-on-Sea harbour. The current planning permission states that no ‘beach recharge’ operations – adding more sand and sediment - should start until work has been carried out to extend and raise the height of a rock groyne, the artificial breakwater which protects the bay.

This clause protects Rhos Harbour from siltation, or the harbour becoming blocked with shifting sand. But Conwy now says the clause makes the work impossible to complete because a marine licence stipulates that the heightening of the breakwater must be completed before the end of September – to protect birds.

Addressing the clause, the planning application reads: “This however renders works undeliverable, as the marine licence requires that beach recharge operations must be complete before the end of September to ensure that overwintering birds are not affected by the works.

Two stories today....

Work to demolish 'iconic' art deco house in North Wales gets underway
Proposals to demolish the house caused a backlash among locals who insisted it should be preserved

Images captured demolition contractors already on site preparing the internal work required as glass windows are removed ready for the full demolition of the building. According to the Cadw report, the plot of land was acquired in 1935 by Mr Evans.

North Wales supermarket will be closed for 'months' with retailer considering pop-up alternative
The Co-op store in Rhos-on-Sea faces a long period of closure after a fire last month

The retailer has said it will be at least five months before the shop reopens. Bosses are considering other "local solutions" to support shoppers.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused while the store remains closed, and we are looking at local solutions including the possible introduction of a pop-up shop to continue to serve a range of everyday essentials conveniently while the store remains temporarily closed."           ref DP
