A SECTION of the Old Colwyn coastal path has reopened after work to connect it to the new promenade was completed.

The section from the parking area by The Arches to the A55 footbridge is now open, with the path now connected to the newly raised promenade.

The path still diverts away from the promenade at this point, while contractors finish this major civil engineering project to improve the coastal defences at Old Colwyn.

A Conwy County Borough Council spokesperson said: "We expect the promenade road and coastal path to reopen at the end of March 2024."

WORK ON the Old Colwyn promenade could be completed next week, with the council saying the project is "nearly there".

This week, a flood gate, road signs, health markers and roadside safety fencing are being installed by contractors.

To complete the promenade, coloured surfacing will need to be added to the road.

The council said that weather permitting, they expected to complete the work next week.

They added that once benches had been installed on the newly laid surfacing, the promenade and road would be open soon after.

The final stage of major new sea defences designed to protect a village promenade has been completed.

The project at Old Colwyn in Conwy county is also aimed at preventing the potential collapse, in extreme storm conditions, of the railway line along the north Wales coast, and parts of the A55 road.

It has taken three years and about ?35m to finish a scheme that has included the installation of 160,000 tonnes of rock armour along a 720m (2,362ft) stretch.

Conwy council cabinet member Goronwy Edwards said storms last week showed "how vulnerable some of these coastlines are".

Bird's eye view of revamped Welsh seafront with 'mini-pier' after ?18m spent
The seafront at Old Colwyn had been out of bounds since 2021

This week Conwy council released a promo showing a bird's eye view of the redeveloped seafront and also revealed that extra money had been secured from Welsh Government to extend rock armour in front of the seawall opposite Rotary Way, to help protect this section of prom.

Here are some of those pictures from the overhead view.    https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/gallery/birds-eye-view-revamped-welsh-29195170

Beach track plan on two of North Wales' most popular beaches agreed
The beaches will now be more accessible for people with disabilities

Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea beaches will be more accessible for people with disabilities, after a planning committee granted permission for specialist access tracks. Colwyn Bay Town Council submitted a planning application to Conwy’s planning department, seeking permission for the 25m access tracks at Rhos-on-Sea beach and Porth Eirias.

The town council will pay for the "mats" after being awarded £10,000 from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund. The tracks will be held down with spikes and staples.

Before and after as Old Colwyn promenade work continues

The promenade and coastal path reopened in April, with work on the site past the three-year mark.

The nearly £18million project began in May 2021, and has included building a 720m long rock barricade in front of the existing seawall using 160,000 tonnes of rock, raising the promenade and road by 1.5 metres, and adding a fishing platform and new beach access steps.

The promenade road initially closed in May 2021 for an 18-month period, before Conwy County Borough Council secured extra funding to complete all the work required on this stretch, extending the project to 2024.

Re: Colwyn Bay Waterfront Redevelopment...large empty retail units

With the new sandy beach, this should be an easy fix........ but then again it is the council handling it.....  :-\   Time to recoup some tax payers money......

EFFORTS are being made to fill two large empty retail units located within a huge glass fronted building near the beach.
The units are at Porth Eirias, described as a "prime beachfront location", on Colwyn Bay Promenade. One became available in November 2024 whilst the other has been vacant for more 18 months - since September 2023.

The retail spaces, both being marketed on Rightmove by Conwy County Borough Council, Estates and Asset Management, are about 61.68m2 each in size.
